There is sometimes a downside to the idea that prisoners should be released for their own safety.

It was an effort, like many across the country, to try to slow the spread of the coronavirus in jails. But one day after officials in Hillsborough County, Fla., released more than 160 inmates, one of them shot and killed a man in Tampa, the authorities said.

The inmate, Joseph Edward Williams, 26, was arrested this week and charged with second-degree murder, resisting an officer with violence as well as drug and gun charges, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

Mr. Williams had been released on March 19 from the Orient Road Jail in Tampa, awaiting resolution of lower-level, nonviolent drug offenses, the sheriff’s office said. He was accused of committing the murder the next day.

Mr. Williams was the only one of the 164 inmates released from two county jails to have been arrested again, the sheriff’s office said on Wednesday. But the case could reignite criticism from some law enforcement officials and prosecutors who had warned that releasing inmates as a public health response to the virus could jeopardize public safety.

Baltimore officials had to spread the word that African-Americans can get sick from COVID-19.

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Despite African Americans making up a majority of the coronavirus cases in Maryland, the city’s health commissioner said a widespread rumor is hurting efforts to educate city residents.

Health commissioner Dr. Letita Dzirasa said Tuesday the city plans to increase its messaging and outreach efforts to make sure people understand that no one is immune from COVID-19.

“Unfortunately, there is a persistent rumor that African Americans are immune to coronavirus. This is false, and the data shows this is a very dangerous belief,” she said.

Initial racial demographic data of coronavirus cases in the city and across the state also shows African Americans have a higher rate of fatality than whites, she said.

Among the steps, Dzirasa outlined the city will increase “culturally-relevant signage” at places such as corner stores and bus stops, where some city residents are still gathering despite a stay-at-home order and health officials urging people to practice social distancing.

So the first is literally 1/164th chance and is frankly irrelevant to the overall narrative regarding "releasing prisoners early" whilst the second is insane and data suggests otherwise (due to economic and educational factors, not biological ones as this rumour suggests)

Three percent is high. If the estimates of 2.2 million casualties ended up being accurate, that would put the death toll at 0.67%. In that case, someone saying that no one will die is much closer to the truth than this person on Twitter.

As for acceptable casualty rates, that does depend on multiple factors. I don't think 2 million people dying is worth waiting for two months for widespread testing.

“LIBERATE MINNESOTA!” “LIBERATE MICHIGAN!” “LIBERATE VIRGINIA,” Trump said in a Friday tweet-storm.

White House adviser Stephen Moore insisted that those protesting for the economy to reopen are “modern-day Rosa Parks” (they are not).

At the Austin protest, crowds chanted “Fire Fauci!” — referring to Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert who has urged caution against immediately reopening businesses..."

MADISON, Wis. (AP) Interest in a rally at the Wisconsin state Capitol calling for a reopening of the state has exploded after Gov. Tony Evers extended a stay-at-home order until May 26.

The rally scheduled for April 24 had about 700 people who said on Facebook they planned to attend just before Evers announced the order extension on Thursday. As of Friday morning, more than 2,400 said they were attending.
One of the organizers of the rally, Madison Elmer, said Friday that a group of people got together to put it on out of frustration over how Evers has handled reaction to the pandemic. She said they have been approached by special interest groups that want to get involved, but they’ve declined their involvement.

“We didn’t want them hijacking it or turning it into something political to fit their agenda,” said Elmer, 33, who said she lives in southeast Wisconsin but declined to say where. She said organizers have been deluged with threats and “people saying they hope we die, people calling us murderers.”

“My personal goal of the rally is to start bringing people together that have common goals in mind, which is to get rid of the stay at home order,” Elmer said. “Lots of us want us to demand Gov. Evers and (the Department of Health Services) come up with a plan for ending this. There is no plan in place. He’s not reassuring us this is going to end.”

Is the US the only Nation on the Planet that is consistently, on average, THIS DUMB???

It’s the only place where you have a political party that legitimately is comprised of amoral garbage that would let people die that don’t have to for money and power boosted by stupid uneducated hicks that make me rethink whether everyone should vote.

Here’s the reality. Trump and the Republicans know that the economy is fucked. The market hasn’t had time to process the effects of this much unemployment and quite frankly people aren’t going to go back to business as usual right away NO MATTER WHAT. So Trump’s trying to get the red states to open up so, gambling then so that they can say “the economy is tanking and people are suffering and those damn Democrats in their blue states are dragging us all down”. That’s their plan. They want a scapegoat for something unavoidable. And it’s hard for empathize and say they don’t deserve the havoc that’s coming to them over this.

With all that said, the likely scenario is they open up too soon, people are still hesistant and took too much of a hit, so the economy is still rocked AND the spread starts back up and we have to go back to this. So they aren’t even particularly smart in this strategy.

Trump is a moron. He’s too irrational to realize a situation for what it is. He’s literally in an election year where almost nobody is talking about his opponent right now and he has massive attention on him. If he was remotely competent he could have just addressed the earlier, kicked back and listened to Fauci and the governors, made sure more of that stimulus money went to the people and he could hand come looking good in a crisis situation and had George W post 9/11 bump that made people forget about how **** he was for 3 years. It’s amazing how stupid this man is and how dumb the people around him are.

And people will die and lose their livelihood because of it.
