    The losers always complain.

You can google "Republicans want to abolish electoral college" and find a rich trove of examples.

The healthcare thing isnt hard. The issue is Donor Politicians overcomplicate it because their money is at stake.

You create a two tiered system.
    1. Free NHS style healthcare taken from your taxes, its good but you may have to wait for certain things because everyone gets a turn.
    2. Do you have money or insurance ? Cool you can go get Private Healthcare which may cost alot and require you to navigate the usual "Insurance companies dont want to pay you or only go for the cheapest option" shenanigans but you can be seen sooner or get unconventional stuff done.

On this date in 2015, "Crazy/Stupid Republican of the Day" ran a profile of Chris Mapp, a former candidate for U.S. Senate in Texas whose opinion of President Obama was that he was "a socialist son of a bitch" and his immigration policy as literally "shoot wetbacks on sight". After the latter comment drew widespread criticism for publishing that latter opinion in an editorial, Mapp defended the term, saying using it in Texas was "as easy as breathing air", before updating his campaign website to tell poor people to "GET UP OFF YOUR DEAD ASS AND GET TO WORK". Alas, Sen. John Cornyn had little trouble advancing past Mapp in the GOP Primary, and he only got 1.8% of the vote. Since we haven't seen Mapp emerge to run for any office since.

On this date in 2016, “Crazy/Stupid Republican of the Day” posted a profile of Pete Brunstetter, a former North Carolina State Senator who sponsored an attempt to create an amendment to the state constitution ban same sex marriage. That's not the worst part... the reason for his gay marriage opposition per his wife in multiple statements is so that Caucasians will not be outpaced in breeding by minorities. Brunstetter survived the controversy to win re-election in 2012, but then resigned his office in 2013, halfway through the term, to take a job working as an executive at Novant Health.

On this date in both 2017, 2018, as well as 2019, "Crazy/Stupid Republican of the Day" published its first profile of Colorado State Senator Owen Hill, who was first elected to that office back in 2012. Briefly in 2014, he entered the race for the U.S. Senate before backing out after recordings of Owen Hill at a Republican fundraiser discussing his time doing volunteer work in Nairobi that threw fuel on the Birther conspiracy theory, as he said, "You spend time out there in a Kenyan slum and little kids are running around barefoot in these kinds of streets and you ask them what they want to be, they want to be an astronaut, they want to be a physicist, a marine biologist, one kid even told me he wanted to be President of the United States. I held back my snarky comment that said ‘Well, you know what, we already have someone from Kenya as President of the United States.'" When those comments came to light and Hill was called out for participating in racist conspiracy talk, he refused to apologize for it, and claimed it was an overreaction from "radicals" working for Mark Udall's campaign.

Anyway, as a legislator, Hill voted for an attempt to allow students to introduce religious counterarguments during science class in schools, voted against HB 1224, an effort to limit the size of ammunition magazines after the shooter in the Aurora massacre killed dozens of people with such a capability, voted to cravenly defend the right of domestic violence offenders to continue to keep their guns, and co-sponsored SB 268, an end-around attempt to overturn Roe v. Wade by changing the definition of a "person" in assault and homicides to include fetuses. Bizarrely, Hill made news in 2017 for co-sponsoring a new bill that would legalize the carrying of switchblades and omit them from the classification as a “deadly weapon” because… well, we don’t know. I guess he’s in the pro-stabbing lobby, which seems odd for a guy who purports himself to be pro-life. So pro-life, in fact, that in 2018, he voted against establishing grants to fund suicide prevention funding for schools in Colorado. That doesn’t seem hypocritical at all, does it?

Anyway, Hill will be facing term limits in 2020, and he’s growing ever more determined to weasel his way out of the Colorado State Senate and get to Washington, D.C. After his failed Senate attempt in 2014, in 2018 he took a shot at a Congressional seat, this time gunning for U.S. House Rep. Doug Lamborn in Colorado’s 5th Congressional District. Hill ended up finishing a distant third in that primary, garnering only 18% of the vote, which was still trailing even the even-nuttier CSGOPOTD alumni Darryl Glenn.

So far in the current term of the Colorado state legislature, he’s voted against several common sense bills that have turned up, from equal pay legislation, to a bill to set policies for sexual misconduct on college and university campuses, to a bill regarding transgender citizens being able to change their gender to “X” on their birth certificates, to even voting against a potential ban on gay conversion therapy.

Owen Hill faces term limits for his seat in the Colorado State Senate again in 2020, and we’re predicting that he’s going to frantically make a run for some higher office in Congress, Senate, or elsewhere to avoid being sent packing by voters in two years’ time, either as a primary challenger to Cory Gardner, or Doug Lamborn again. Expect something else kooky to hit the news wire from Hill when he hits the campaign trail again.

Oh like how normal countries have it? Perish the thought.

Or if you're American, just perish. I suppose.

As for why people don't support it, there are significant tradeoffs. Taking out the profit motive could disincentivize innovation. Someone is going to have to make the difficult choices of when something is too expensive to be worth the cost.

The biggest problem may be that a significant chunk of voters are happy with employer-based health insurance (a legacy on wage caps during World War 2.) This is obviously a system that doesn't work for everyone, but does mean there are stakeholders afraid of losing the current status quo.

Trump is making non-trivial improvements among African American voters.

And she lost to a guy who was caught on tape grabbing women by the pussy.

This raises an interesting question: How often do we actually get an exciting candidate? How do we gauge that?

One factor is that different voters will find different things exciting.

Even the candidates we might agree are generally considered exciting (Bill Clinton, Barack Obama) ran in historically favorable general election environments.

    Debbie Stabenow won reelection.

The former minority leader of the State Senate was elected Governor of Michigan by 9.5 points.

Meanwhile, Sanders' endorsed candidate in Florida's governor's race lost that election.

    Here's the thing...

If the assertion is "Gillum running as a progressive and losing by 0.4% shows us that progressives cannot win."

We are just going to have to politely disagree about that.

I'd agree that it was a loss on that day, but disagree with the idea that it's any sort of a loss that we can draw any sort of a conclusion form.

Trump Administration Blocks Iran’s Top Diplomat From Addressing the U.N. Security Council

The Trump administration is barring Iran’s top diplomat from entering the United States this week to address the United Nations Security Council about the U.S. assassination of Iran’s top military official in Baghdad, violating the terms of a 1947 headquarters agreement requiring Washington to permit foreign officials into the country to conduct U.N. business, according to three diplomatic sources.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif requested a visa a “few weeks ago” to enter the United States to attend a Jan. 9 Security Council meeting on the importance of upholding the U.N. Charter, according to a diplomatic source familiar with the matter. The Thursday meeting was to provide Tehran’s top diplomat with his first opportunity to directly address the world community since U.S. President Donald Trump ordered the Jan. 3 drone strike that killed Maj. Gen. Qassem Suleimani, a top Iraqi militia leader, among others.

I'm not saying it means progressives can't win. It does show a progressive underperforming centrists in other states that went for Trump just as narrowly.

It highlights a dilemma for progressives: how much is it worth an increased chance of losing in order to get candidates who will make bolder decisions when in office?
    Sincerely,

Kevin McCarthy claims Trump killed Iranian general because Adam Schiff ‘spent the last year on impeachment’

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarty (R-CA) on Tuesday suggested that President Donald Trump would not have ordered a drone strike on a top Iranian general if House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-CA) had not pursued impeachment.

During an appearance on Fox & Friends, host Pete Hegseth noted that Democrats have accused the president of overstepping his authorization to use military force after the killing of Qassem Soleimani.
“You know what,” McCarthy said of Schiff. “He’s the chairman of the Intel Committee, maybe had he spent the last year working on that, trying to protect us from what was happening in Iran, from the bombing of the tankers, Saudi Arabia, taking down our drone.”

“Instead of taking that committee and making it impeachment, he would never make that comment,” he continued. “I don’t think it’s a place for them to play politics.”
