The point is not that the Republicans newfound willingness to provide relief during the virus makes them somehow good, it's that it shows that the GOP never did and never will care about how to pay for social programs if it is politically expedient to do so, and that Democrats could maybe take a lesson or two from that.

Only you could look at Republicans making things worse and somehow turn it into an attack on the Democrats.

Or to put it in your terms "Wait until people are hurting, dying then swoop in to help" that sure sounds like a progressive, forward thinking way of doing things right ?

To some degree sure. Government is often about compromise. You go against your stated principals to get elected or get things passed. Both sides do it all the time because you sort of have to in order to get anything done.
