They just published the most unhappy possible ending.
A truly happy ending to the Bruce and Hulk's story would always feel cheap.
The most I could hope for his Hulk somehow defeating the TOBA in one final struggle, and finally being allowed to pass on to Heaven/Jack Kirby's drawing room. Skaar takes over as the main Gamma hero.
That's about as happy as I can see it getting.
