In story, it does make sense. They don't want the Avengers there because the fungus would absorb their powers. The FF are taken out very quickly, which leaves the X-Men, who just aren't there because they'd rather be on their island.
And the Champions weren't mentioned, but we can easily guess why they weren't called in - one, same reason as the Avengers, and two, they didn't want to involve any more kids (there was protests at Pei's involvement).
