Ditto. Still my favourite modern Marvel run.

I would also add Ennis on Fury.

My other favourites are already pretty well represented on this thread. Arron on Thor, Hickman on just about anything.

1- Ms Marvel by G. Willow Wilson - a comic that managed to feel simultaneously of-the-moment and timeless
2- Thor by Jason Aaron - all the best things about superhero comics - spectacle, humour, gravitas - are here
3- Squirrel-Girl by Ryan North - a unique book that will be missed
4- Avengers by Jonathon Hickman - made the Marvel universe feel huge again
5- Hawkeye by Matt Fraction - low-key the most influential superhero comic of the decade

Captain America by Nick Spencer - if Secret Empire had managed to stick the ending and hadn't suffered from 'event-itis', this would be #3

And this is an unpopular opinion, but the Inhumans saga by Charles Soule over multiple books was genuinely great and under appreciated. Looked at separately from the backstage politics, it was an epic story that was seeped in continuity but was still approachable for newbies and had great characterisation that made underused characters interesting again.

And I have a soft spot for the ANAD Avengers/Champions run by Waid and Zub. It felt like a story with its eye on future possibilities, rather than reinventing the past.

The only thing I would do from your list is remove Ms. Marvel and add Brubaker's Captain America and Iron Fist

    Thanks for the reminder, Electricmastro...

Brubaker's Winter Soldier was definitely a great run:

    Tom King, Vision.
Nick Spencer, Superior Foes of Spider-Man.

    Then in no particular order:

Dan Slott, Spider-Man though he stayed too long.
    Christopher Yost, Scarlet Spider.
    Christopher Yost, Avenging Spider-Man.
Chip Zdarsky, Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man.
    Nick Spencer, Spider-Man.
    Jason Latour, Spider-Gwen.
    Jason Aaron, Thor.
    Gerry Duggan/Brian Posenh, Deadpool.
    Jonathan Hickman, Secret Wars.

Ms. Marvel would be mine. Easily the most fun and joyful thing Marvel has produced.

But if you want my pick for best serious comic? It ain't Waid's Daredevil, Hickman's anything, Fraction's Hawkeye, or whatever Spencer put out.

It was Greg Rucka's Punisher. The first time I ever felt interested in the character, the only time I ever felt there was depth in the concept of the character, brutal on an emotional level, very honest about the crap surrounding the Punisher, and a harsh but powerful ending that felt just right.

I'm never going to read anything that comes close to that level of honesty and seriousness in a Marvel comic again. Vision was close but it felt like it was just a flip on the concept of Vision instead of just an exploration of him and his motivations. Ennis' run was just garbage in comparison.

Sometimes the wheel doesn't need to be reinvented. Sometimes it doesn't need to feel like a copy of an Indie book. Sometimes the universe doesn't need to be at stake or ending.

Sometimes it can just be Rucka's hard look at The Punisher, what he stands for, and the awfulness of it.

I also still don't get Hawkeye by Matt Fraction. I just hate everyone in that comic and no matter how much indie paint you smear over it, it was just boring and unfunny to me.

What makes it do good in your own words?

The dialogue is really good, it's got a real feel for how working-class people talk and communicate. You have this believable sense of place and community in that building. The relationship between Barton and Bishop is great, human, and affecting.

Rucka’s Punisher is definitely a hidden gem. A brilliant book.

Agreed. My favorite part of Rucka's run is Punisher WarZone. Even though the outcome is predictable, I still consider it a real treat seeing Rucka's version of the Punisher VS. the Avengers:

To be honest I think the art really lifts the entire series; if Aja was not on the series I don't know if the impact would be as strong.

Other than the art the dialogue is amazing and the low stakes make it pretty amazing .

But I understand Fraction has a certain appeal and if you don't like it it may not be for you. Have you read any of Fraction's previous stuff?

Also his current Jimmy Olsen book is AMAZING

    Quoted for truth.

    And...

    Remender & Opena's Uncanny X-Force
    Fraction & Aja's Hawkeye

Just maybe it wasn’t the kind of comic you like. Nothing wrong with that. If your reaction to the characters was hatred then it would indicate there was something about it that rubbed you the wrong way.
