Should the X-men, and mutantkind, keep trying to coexist with humans?

For decades, the X-Men have fought for coexistence with humanity by protecting them, especially from other humans. They had hope that one day, they would all be able to live together in peace. However, HOUSE OF X and POWERS OF X has since stated that they are done with all of that. They are tired of fighting for something that basically seems impossible and now just want to do what is necessary to prevent their extermination. This is an understandable shift in thinking and it doesn't make them villains for becoming fed up; however it also goes against what had previously made them heroes. So, should they have kept trying?

Yes and i feel that is what they are doing now as well just in a way that is more productive for them and allows them to develop their own culture and what being mutant really means to them within that culture. Which is important to develop for any people to stand the test of time.
