(Note: Back when Marvel was doing the new Epic line where they were taking submissions, that was going to be mine. Unfortunately, the Epic thing ended pretty abruptly, before I got very far into writing it.)

Seeing the original GotG mentioned in another thread, made me think how great it would be to have the original back, and how seamlessly it'd be possible to continue from the end of the 90's series, after all, there has not been much news from the alternate future they hail from.

The Guardians of the Galaxy has always been a team with a great name that has failed to live up to its true potential, at least in it's original form. As Guardians of the Galaxy, this team should sport a roster of the most powerful heroes ever or at least a well-oiled and perfect fighting unit. The OG Guardians have never been either. There were times in which the team didn’t even have any space-faring members. Also the scope of the threats and stories of the Guardians should always be huge. Stopping civilizations from going to war and saving the Galaxy should not be handled by a rag-tag bunch of Avengers-wanna-be. Don’t get me wrong. I don’t think that we should completely change the line-up of the team (the whole “Galactic Guardians” bit didn’t do it for me). I have a profound affection for all its members, I just really want to see them reach their maximum potential as characters and as heroes. In fact, let’s see who are the Guardians and what can be done with them.

Major Vance Astro – The only leader for the team, Vance has always had to face the handicap of being afraid to expose his skin in an unprotected environment because he could revert to his real age of over 1000 years old. Not anymore. During their lost in time period, his ionic blood (due to a transfusion by Hollywood) and a healing treatment provided by Kang the Conqueror will combine to stabilize his condition, although not at a perfect age. Vance will be in his late 40’s but still in great shape and with more control then ever of his psycho-kinetic powers. At the end of the Guardians’ last run, before they became lost in time, Vance was becoming much more comfortable with his powers and with his role as leader. Now, finally, Vance has come to terms with who he is and what his life is going to be. This will be widely shown in their new adventures with Vance using his powers to do battle in deep space and leading the Guardians with unmatched efficiency. Vance has finally re-found his fire and this will have repercussions in his relationship with Aleta.
Captain Charlie 27 – Major Astro’s second in command. Charlie is the perfect soldier, more valuable to the team for his experience than for his strength, which is barely in the superhuman class 10 range. However, after repeated exposure to medical devices that played on his metabolism and molecular make-up, added to a serum administered by Diablo, Charlie will reach a density never even imagined by any other Jovian. His strength - now in the 35 ton range - combined with his combat training will really be something to be reckoned with, allowing him to take on adversaries who rank higher than him is the strength sacle. Upon returning, Captain 27 leads the Guardians on a mission to free a small contingent of Jovian slave miners (initially a group of 30 miners, 12 women and 18 men, who were recruited at Jupiter a few years before the Badoon invasion, and who, having nowhere to go after their whole race was wiped out, were enslaved by their employers, and who were now about 50, a few having died and a few having had children), miners who then go on to settle on Jupiter, recreating the Earth colony, and early warning post of the solar system. Charlie’s relationship with Nikki is stronger than ever.
Martinex T’Naga – Marty is the team’s scientist, and this needs to be more emphasized. Marty will totally revamp the Guardians’ hardware (scanners, communication devices, weapons, etc...). Though not very proficient in combat, Martinex’s control over cold and heat is a valuable weapon for the Guardians. Marty acts sort of like a surrogate father to Replica.
Aleta Ogord – A powerful and passionate woman, Aleta will not deal well with the facts that, suddenly, Vance has so little time for her and Starhawk no longer seems to have interest in her. She will compensate for those feelings by establishing a strong bond with Replica, an expected transference, considering she still hasn’t gotten over the deaths of her own children. Her ability to generate solid light constructs make her the Guardians’ second most powerful member.
Yondu Udonta – A priest and a warrior at the same time, Yondu is perhaps the most complex member of the team. Upon finding out that his world of Alpha Centauri IV is once again teeming with life and prospering, Yondu’s warrior side seems to become much more evident, than his spiritual one. However, Yondu is far from being considered bloodthirsty. He is just extremely good at what he does. He is even becoming more comfortable with advanced technology. Yondu is a born and bred hunter, master of the yakka arrow and an expert in most forms of armed and unarmed personal combat. 2T.
Nicholette “Nikki” Gold – Extremely agile and a sure-shot with any kind of hand blaster, Nikki also has the ability to absorb heat and generate flares with her “hair.” Vance and Charlie are going to be working more closely with Nikki in developing a personal combat technique that maximizes her agility. Nikki is a person that enjoys life and wants to make the most of it. After years of an on/off relationship with Captain 27, Nikki has finally admitted that there can be no other man for her. The Guardians have become Nikki’s family and she is very protective of this family. Nikki has a strong dislike for reptilian races and this prevents her from fully accepting Replica as a fellow Guardian.
Stakar of Arcturus, the Starhawk – Undoubtedly the most powerful member of the team. Essentially a being made of light, Starhawk can fly at unimaginable speeds; become a living hologram or even invisible; generate lasers, flares and photon bursts and others. After being in contact with the Quantum Bands for some time Stakar will have totally mastered his abilities, including the knowledge of how to transform his body into ultra-hard light which will give him a fair modicum of superhuman strength, enough to place him in the super-human class 25 range. While the other Guardians were lost in time, Stakar put together an army of the most powerful beings in the universe to battle the invading forces of Era. His victory, not without a cost, will bring serious repercussions to the Guardians. During the final battle Starhawk was temporarily thrown into the time stream and there he saw glimpses of the future. As a result Stakar of Arcturus is once again the one who knows. The problem is, he never knows enough.
Replica – The Skrull with the soul of a human. Replica is the youngest of the Guardians and, like Nikki, considers the Guardians her family. Replica is a sensitive but extremely resourceful girl. She is able to use her shape-changing abilities to the maximum potential allowed by her age. Replica sees Marty as her father figure; Vance as the handsome, older man on whom she has a crush; Yondu as the wise confidant, Charlie as an older brother; Stakkar as a spooky distant relative, Aleta as the mother figure and Nikki as the sister with whom she has a troubled relationship.

The story of the Guardians of the Galaxy would pick up five years after the conclusion of their last series in which the GG were left lost in time. Where they were and how that affected them will be explored along the first year of stories, but Kang, the Conqueror, played an important part in it all. The Guardians return to find their universe slightly different from when they left. Earth and its two allied worlds, New Haven (The world once known as Mainframe's World. Rancor’s World is now known as Xavieria and no longer harbors the enslaved Inhumans, who are back to living in Attilan on the Moon.) and Alfa Centauri IV are once again back on their feet and standing strong, in great part because of their defenders, the Black Knights and the super human Commandeers (The new Punisher – Douglas Castelinni, the ultimate soldier, responsible for taming the old Punishers gang, disbanding the survivors and transforming them into soldiers fighting for Earth; Talon, Master of the Mystic Arts; Kismet; Woden; Shamrock; and Cuchulain, the Irish Wolfhound) on Earth, Haven’s Guard and the super human Archangels (a spent, but still powerful, Phoenix IX; a new, female, Spirit of Vengeance; Drax, the Destroyer; the Steel Guardian, a cyborg captain of the Haven’s Guard; Replica and Mainframe, using his Vision replacement bodies) on New Haven, and the Priest Guild on Alfa Centauri IV. But the universe is in turmoil because of the three-way war between the Shi'ar, the Axi-Tun and the Uncreated, and it is to this chaos that the Guardian return. Finding themselves in the middle of a fierce battle the Guardians kick butt and take names, and after surviving this first contact (although not unscathed) the Guardians attempt to contact their allies and reorganize. Hollywood joins the Archangels of Haven and upon fully repairing their ship Vance Astro, Martinex, Nikki, Yondu, Charlie 27 and Aleta, joined by Replica and a more powerful than ever Starhawk, rocket into space to end this war. With this membership the Guardians will be at their strongest, especially with all the personal changes that they will have gone through in these last five years. Just in this first story arc we will be able to glimpse the future of many long-lived Earth heroes as well as what the Shi'ar Imperial Guard of the Future will be like. We will also see what is the political situation on Earth and have a glimpse of what has happened in the Universe since the Guardians disappeared, five years ago (the changes that Earth has gone through in the almost fifteen years since the Badoon invasion ended; the war against Era; how the Inhumans were freed by the Commandeers and what is the status-quo in Xavieria; etc...). In future stories we may see what happened to the Nova Corps, the Eternals, the Atlanteans, Vampires and many others. The untold origin of Replica will also be revealed and alongside honorary member Firelord, the Guardians will go up against the Universal Church of Truth. Plus, we will check on old enemies such as Malevolence, Rancor, Overkill, The Stark, The Reavers of Arcturus, The Brotherhood of the Badoon, Force, the new Minions of Menace and the return of Korvac.

    Peace

    Marvel’s Royal Flush Gang…:

    ARSENAL (Ace)
An enemy of Iron Man and The Avengers built during WWII, this robotic badboy was made to last. Super strong and durable it also comes standard w. air jets, inertia darts, an electro-stun field, high-intensity laser beams, flame-throwers, multiple gun systems and a toxic gas dispenser.

    ARCADE (King)
A happy go-lucky homocidal maniac, Arcade has no powers but has genius-level knowledge of technology far ahead of conventional science in the fields of robotics, mechanical and electrical engineering. He specializes in creating death traps, sometimes for hire, often for fun.

    PROFITEER (Queen)
What’s an Elder of The Universe doing on Earth, working w. Arcade of all ppl? I’d say…playing the long game. Though Cosmic beings on Earth often end up getting mugged (Darkseid) or arrested (Thanos), Profiteer’s having a jolly fun time and making money hand over fist.

    CHANCE (Jack)
A high tech battle suit and vision enhancing helmet of his own design make Chance formidable enough to go one on one w. Spider-man. A compulsive gambler and adrenaline junkie, Chance will figure the odds of success and take the lead in any fight the team gets into.

    JACKPOT (Ten)
This heroine turned villain’s powers (strength/speed/durability/reflexes/recovery) come from Mutant Growth Hormone, anabolic steroids, and several other drugs. Downward spiral pretty much covers her eventually joining Arcade’s team. Now she has the means to keep amping herself to often dangerous levels.

Sort of inspired by the recent Avengers/X-Men/Eternals event, we have:

What If the Invaders had never disbanded? - Captain America is lost at sea at the end of WW II, however, Bucky manages to survive, and that small variable is enough to change the fate of the world and so many of its heroes. Bucky stays at William’s Naslund’s side when he is chosen to cover for Rogers, and when the second Captain America falls in battle, it’s an older James Buchanan Barnes who assumes the role, leading the Invaders for many decades, until his death. Namor doesn’t leave the team, nor disappears for many decades, and he, as well as Atlantean science, are instrumental in preventing the deterioration of the android form of Human Torch. Eventually, both give up their places in the team to their successors. The Invaders thrive along the decades, new members coming and going, such as the Monster Hunter Ulysses Bloodstone, or the Canadian adventurers Judd and Logan, and others. Their contributions to the advancement of society prevent the failed Richard’s space flight, as well as the birth of the Fantastic Four, and the gamma bomb experiments that led to the creation of the Hulk. They also strive to keep the humans/mutants tensions low, though a battle against the mutant supremacist Apocalypse has Dr. Donald Blake as one of its causalities. However, at the beginning of the 21st century, King Namor’s incessant efforts to find the original Captain America finally pay-off, and Steve Rogers returns to lead the team he founded just in time for humanity’s darkest hours, with the emergence of the Inhuman – Eternals alliance of hidden races, with the treaty celebrated by their new leaders, Maximus and Virako, and its attempts to conquer the planet, to save it by ruling it. On top of that, the usual bad guys are still doing their own things, and the Thin Man and his team of rogue operatives continue to complicate things.

    Current Team:

Captain America - recently unfrozen, Steve Rogers leads once more the Invaders after the death of his partner and successor, James Barnes. Still coming to terms to the changes of the world, Cap must step up to lead the Invaders through some of the team’s greatest challenges in all of its existence.
Namora- Team powerhouse, standing in for her cousin, Namor. As unruly and headstrong as her cousin, Namora nonetheless is a great asset to the team. 50 T
Spark - Teresa Raymond, granddaughter of the deceased Thomas Raymond, the Human Flame. Shy and insecure. Not sure if she belongs with the team.
Vision - Arkus, other-dimensional law-enforcement officer. Long-lived, experienced and powerful. Even if often a bit too much enigmatic, a good friend and confidant for the returned Captain America. 40 T
Dyna-Mite - Dr. Bill Foster, who studied, duplicated and perfected the Dyna-Mite shrinking process. Eager to show his worth. Team resident scientist.
The Mighty Destroyer - Former ex-con and guinea pig Luke Cage revealed his identity to the world after proving his innocence. Never backs down from a challenge. 25 T
Miss America - Carol Danvers, subjected to an alien device that gave her extraordinary abilities. Officially led the team when Cap returned, however, soon lost the de facto leadership to the seasoned veteran. Not very happy to be relegated to second in command, nonetheless, does her job. 25 T

    Reserve Members -
King Namor, the Submariner - Namor Mackenzie. His duties as ruler of the prosperous kingdom of Atlantis prevent him from continuing on as a member of the team. Still, he is always on call for when his power is needed. 75 T
The Human Torch - Jim Hammond. Retired and mostly handling bureaucratic protocols while living a bit afar from humanity in general.
Spitfire - Jacqueline Falsworth, rejuvenated speedster. Protects Great Britain alongside her new partner, the heir to her father’s mantle.
Union Jack - Joseph Chapman, the resourceful 3rd generation British champion. Alongside Spitfire, manages a network of new British operatives, such as the vampire hunter Blade, the English spy, Wisdom and others in the special M-13 division.
The Black Widow - Natasha Romanoff, former Russian spy and wife of the deceased James Barnes. Mostly retired, however, still available when there is a need for her special talents.
Blazing Skull - Mark Todd, mystical powerhouse. Helping his new partner, Elsa Bloodstone, daughter of his deceased best friend, Ulysses, in her monster hunting mission. 40 T
Citzen V - John Watkins III, grandson of the original. Prefers to work alone, especially after being pushed out of the team by the ambitious Miss America.
Silver Scorpion - Bethany Cabe, armored bodyguard to Tony Stark, the Invaders benefactor. 60 T

Liberty Legion - Underground group led by the Thin Man. They work outside of the system, and often find themselves at odds with the Invaders with their official ties with the American government.

The Thin Man – Bruce Dickson. A conspiracy theorist with incredible resources, knowledge of advanced technology and stretching powers. His powers protect his body from the ravages of old age, however, some wonder is the same can be said about his brilliant mind.
Blue Shield – Joe Cartelli. Powerful force-field and enhanced physical attributes. The new blood of the team, disillusioned with the Invaders after being rejected by them as a member.
Major Mapleleaf - Louis Sadler, super-strong and almost invulnerable, aging retarded. An old acquaintance of the Thin Man, without much in his life after the death of his eldest son, the veteran Canadian hero joins the team, greatly enhancing its power. 40 T
Andromeda - Super-strong Atlantean, daughter of Attuma. In search of a cause following the death of her father at the hands of King Namor. The Thin Man develops a technology that allows her to survive long periods out of the water. 35 T
Jack Frost - Immortal son of Ice-giants. Aimless in the world, joins his old teammate in his mission.
Hawkeye – When his attempts at becoming a super-hero go awry, and he is mistaken for a super-villain by the Silver Scorpion, Clint Barton is forced to go underground until he can clear his name. However, he gets drafted into the Liberty Legion before that can happen. A rebel by nature, he ends up questioning quite a lot the Thin Man’s agenda, and his charismatic nature captivates many of his teammates, making him an unforeseen pebble in the leader of the Liberty Legion’s shoe.
Tara - Female attempt to recreate the Human Torch. Stolen by the new Liberty Legion in its first mission. Her loyalty is payment for her freedom.

Among the many threats the Invaders have faced over the years, such as Apocalypse, the Mole Man, the Stranger, the Mandarin, the Soviet Super-Soldiers (Red Guardian, Crimson Dynamo, Unicorn, the Devastator, Iron Maiden and Seraph), and others, are the Masters of Evil, led by Agent Axis II (son of the original), and counting among it’s members Power Man (Erik Josten), the Melter, Llyra of Lemuria, The Swordsman, the new Iron Cross and Baron Blood.
The new Inhumans and Eternals leaderships are both results of coups, with Maximus, with the Inhumans legendary ruler known as the Unspoken at his side, overthrowing Black Bolt and the Royal Family, who are exiled to the Moon, and, aided by his nephew Druig, the once believed dead Virako, unhappy with the current path taken by Zuras as leader of his people, arranges for the Prime Eternal to be killed by the Deviants in an ambush, and then, deposing Athena, the rightful heir, and imprisoning her supporters, including his own son, Ikaris, and brother, Valkin, takes over and declares war on the Deviants and the Humans. A former, sporadic, ally of the Invaders during WWII becomes a key player in this war, the Eternal known as the Forgotten One, who always defended the interests of humanity ahead of those of his own people, so much so that he is considered an outcast among them.

    ^^^I pronounce this awesome!
The world building drew me in; things like familiar characters in new identities, old characters you wouldn’t expect, factoring in how the hidden races of the Eternals and Inhumans would be affected, and the underground Liberty Legion team makes me wish this were a series I could dive into.

    Edit,
The real time aspect you used would really lend itself to a “Life Story” series like Spidey and the FF have had.

And now for something completely silly…

…can these classic Marvel B-list Bad Guys turn over a new leaf and become…Good Guys?
    Probably not.

    THE DEFENDERS?!?

    ABRA KADABRA (Dr. Strange)
The 64th Century showman who uses advanced tech to simulate magic is an unrepentant villain, so when he comes across a villainous realities shattering plot so awful even he wouldn’t do it, he finds himself in the odd position of trying to save the day. Like Dr. Strange when he recruited the original Defenders, Abra Kadabra knows he needs help on this, and he sticks w. what he knows. Villains.

    EARTH MAN (Namor, The Sub-Mariner)
Earth Man, who can duplicate the powers of his opponents to use against them has, in true Namor fashion, fought heroes, and fought with heroes, in order to achieve his goals. Either way, as a militant xenophobe, he has a Namor-ish better than you attitude, when it comes to dealing w. aliens. Not counting Abra, Earh Man would only just tolerate, and straight up not get along w., his other teammates

THE GALACTIC GOLEM (The Silver Surfer)
The Golem was forged by collecting matter from the heart of the universe, molding it into a humanoid form, and giving it life. Though silent, the Golem is def. self aware and capable of speech; it doesn’t advertise that though, as ppl tend to speak freely in front of it thinking its just an automaton. The Golem can generate hyperstellar energy, and is strong, fast, and durable enough to fight and even injure Superman.

    DESPERO (The Hulk)
Despero is a Hulking (pun intended) alien despot easily as devious and murderous as The Maestro. A certified team wrecker Despero has singlehandedly fought the Big Guns of both the JLA and JSA to a standstill, even lifting the Rock of Eternity at one point. Add top tier psychic ability to all that physical power and you’ve got a total package. Despero usually reserves the right to turn on his allies, but he might not in this case. The threat Abra Kadabra’s come to him for help w. isn’t the type one can simply show up and try to join forces w. which offends Despero’s sensibilities.

I really like the idea of a supervillain team created to stop a greater threat. I think this is a really cool concept.
    Wanna make somethin' of it?
