Captain America and the Defenders
The Secret Empire has conquered the U.S.A. and more and eliminated a good part of the Super-hero community. 20 years into their oppressive rule, a frozen man carrying the shield of Captain America is found. A budding resistance movement is able to rescue him, however, it is not the man they thought it would be. Reuniting the few super-humans that are still around, and that the Resistance knows of, a new team is forged, The Defenders.
• Captain America – James Buchanan Barnes is found frozen in a cryo-chamber, in possession of the shield of his former partner. Though fearing that he is not the leader that Steve Rogers was, having once stood in for him, James decides to rise up to the challenge and once again dons his own Captain America suit, and takes the lead of the small taskforce of super-human operatives in the service of the Resistance against the Secret Empire. Master tactician and strategist, superb hand to hand combatant, expert marksman and possessor of an advanced cybernetic arm. 2 T.
• Energizer – Katie Power, the youngest of the Power Pack siblings, and one of the two single survivors. Katie was one of the few super-powered operatives at the service of the Resistance Movement, and she took it upon herself to keep her fellow super-heroes together and working well with the movement. Until Captain America came along. Katie becomes his second in command, working really hard to turn her rag-tag band of fighters into a real team. As Energizer, Katie can disintegrate matter, transforming it into energy, which she can transform into powerful destructive blasts, or even use to fly. Over the years, and with training, has gotten real good at storing the absorbed energy for longer periods.
• Pathway – Laura Dean, formerly of Beta Flight. Laura was never much into the super-hero life, however, when the Secret Empire annexed parts of Canada, at the cost of many members of Alpha, Beta and Gamma Flight, including her twin Sister, Goblyn, who perished in battle, Laura decides she can no longer deny her responsibility and joins the Resistance Movement, becoming best friends with Katie Power, and having a crush on her “bad boy” of a brother. She has learned to be quite dangerous wielding her ability of opening dimensional portals, for much more than just transportation.
• The Thing – Ben Grimm, the sole survivor of the whole Fantastic Four family. Suffering from survivor’s guilt, Ben has spent the last 20 years deep in a cave that leads to the destroyed subterranean kingdom of the Mole Man, in self-imposed exile. Not even when Energizer and Pathway came across him, while they were hiding from the Secret Empire forces, did he agree to leave the cave and go with them. However, that all changed when Captain America came seeking him out, even if it was not the Captain America he was more familiar with. The sight of the man wielding the shield was enough to inspire him. And Ben proves to be invaluable as the new team’s heaviest hitter. Time seems to have left Ben larger, stronger and tougher than ever, and there is not much on the face of the Earth that can withstand his strength. 100 T.
• Mass Master – Jack Power, Katie Power’s single surviving older sibling. Reluctant to return to the super-hero life, Jack had pretended to have lost his powers, an act that allowed him to survive the super-hero culling implemented by the Secret Empire. No longer able to continue hiding, Jack agrees to help his little sister, Katie, when she joins the Resistance Movement. Hardened and cynical, Jack is, nonetheless very proficient in the use of his abilities, and a great fighter to have watching your back in battle. Able to control his body’s own density, becoming a mist of vapor, able to fly, or condensing his body into a minuscle super-hard and heavy form. 5 T.
• Jennifer Kale, Sorceress Supreme – With the death of Dr. Strange, Brother Voodoo, Clea, and many other wielder’s of the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme, the title, and the power that comes with it, ended up falling with the then young sorceress Jennifer Kale. Over the years, her mystical power and control have been greatly refined. Though her main responsibility is safeguarding the Earth dimension from magical incursions from other realities, Ms Kale is also at hand to help the Defenders whenever necessary. In exchange, the Defenders are there to help her, whenever she needs.
• Lord Doom – Kristoff Vernard, heir to Victor Von Doom’s vast fortune and intellect. The Secret Empire deposed and killed Dr. Doom, putting someone working for them on the Latverian Throne. However, Victor already plenty of his vast resources hidden around the globe, in places known only by his true heir, Kristoff Vernard, a boy that once had Doom’s intellect and personality grafted over his own. Cured by Reed Richards, Kristoff retained his adopted father’s prodigious intellect, and soon came to make peace with the sovereign of Latveria. Now an adult, Kristoff may well be the smartest man alive, and has put this intelligence at the Resistance Movement’s service, in hopes of avenging his former master. Arrogant and disruptive, Kristoff is, nonetheless invaluable to the resistance, and, though Captain America has his hands full keeping the Latverian in check, he proves himself up to the task. Oddly enough, Kristoff shows great respect for Ben Grimm, with whom he seems to develop a strong bond. Kristoff and Katie also seem to have something special going on between them. Responsible for designing most of the team’s and of the Resistance Movement’s gear and equipment, Vernard also built for himself a high-tech suit of armor containing many defensive and offensive weapons, similar to Doctor Doom’s, that he uses to go into battle as Lord Doom. 30 T.
Not trusting super-humans, The Secret Empire doesn’t have many employees with inborn super-powers working for them, however they more than make up for this with technology, having numerous thugs wielding high-tech armors and weapons in their payroll, as well as legions of heavily armed soldiers.
