Default Doctor Doom #2 with SPOILERS in which John, Paul and Richard III are discussed

Chris Cantwell knocks another one out of the park here as Doom is visited again by Kang, finds sanctuary with Morgan Le Fay and ends up in Taskmaster's lethal crosshairs.

This creative team of Cantwell and Larocca is really clicking IMO. Cantwell gives us an exciting narrative that covers a lot of ground. It starts off with a disarmed Doom is being escorted by Stephen Strange, Silver Sable and a new iteration of H.E.R.B.I.E. to a waiting aircraft that will take him to New York. Once there he was to be incarcerated while awaiting trial at the United Nations .

But as luck would have it, Kang picks this time to drop in on Doom again, who is alone in the hold of the aircraft. Kang has also seen this future where Doom has a family and is the leader of Earth. He figures this version of Doom would be easy to defeat so he agrees to help Doom escape. Kang just lets him freefall on his own and leaves the rest of the details to Doom.

There rest of the issue takes place in New York as Doom encounters his old flame Morgan Le Fay. She's a time traveler like Doom and Kang so one is never quite sure which version we are seeing. She lives in a rent controlled apartment in Queens and she is definitely not the angry Morgan that Doom encountered back in Bendis's Mighty Avengers. This interlude is a lot of fun as Doom gets frustrated by a chatty Morgan who asks Doom who his favorite Beatle is (John)

We also see another player enter the game as Dr. Adam Brashear gets a visit from the new H.E.R.B.I.E. What's funny is that he's also annoyed by Reed and the new H.E.R.B.I.E. Hmmmm....are we seeing a pattern here with Reed? He also told Hank Pym once that he knew more about Pym Particles than he did.

Things go very bad for Doom at the end as he meets with a new actor on the scene called the Witness, who he hopes can tell him more about his death in the Future. But this is when Taskmaster makes his move.

I liked this issue just as much if not more than the first. IMO Cantwell avoids something that Bendis did in Infamous Iron Man where his overuse of the Hood got to be pretty annoying after a while. Cantwell keeps throwing different characters at Doom and the encounter with Blue Marvel is overdue. He shows us that Victor is not completely ignorant of pop culture while also having him recite a passage from the dream sequence at the end of Shakespeare's Richard III, a fitting choice since at that point of the play all of Richard's enemies are gathering at Bosworth Field.

I hope that Sal Larocca stays on this title for a while. I think an experienced artist like him is a good match for someone who's new to writing comics.

I was very pleased with this issue because something about it is: it keeps up a good pace and does not lag explaining things to us, which was something i really dislike with Bendis's writing at times, all that text isn't necessary. There is a few quiet moments before things pick up in a very fast way and Victor is being kept on his toes. I would have liked to see him a bit more on the run maybe a day or so as he avoids heroes or someone tries to mug him in New York and he takes care of it, however I can't complain when we have someone who seems to know Victor's history well.

My wish for Victor to jump into sea kinda came true XD but too bad Namor was too in Immortal Hulk spoilers:
    being a fry cook undercover
end of spoilers to help him out. lol.

Also Victor spoke about how he hated the happy version of himself thinking him to be weak. I can't wait for the next issue, this is going to be very good.

Ah, so the Witness is a brand new character after all. I knew I hadn't seen him before and the only references I could find online where to an unrelated X-men character with the same name. Limited but potentially quite useful skillset, I can see why he is in demand though. Everyone wants to cheat death sooner or later. I wonder if the Witness has ever been proven wrong?

Anyway, quite a turn of events leading into next issue if the preview cover for #3 is any indication. I'm looking forward to that reunion. Especially given the way that Infamous Iron Man ended.

Oh man, IW I forgot how you wanted Victor to jump into the sea into Namor's realm. How close you were on getting that to happen. I'm going to keep wishing for Namor to appear. And instead of Doom getting mugged, he mugged some guy to get a change of clothes!

I will keep wishing got it too! After all if Cantwell is bringing in all the people that Doom has had significant contact with; Strange, Morgan, etc then its only reasonable to think Namor may be next. Still if we get a Kristoff inclusion it would be amazing. LOL Doom does as he pleases! Victor's green hoodie is a good causal look too. I really like how without saying much it still shows that Victor isn't 100% trusting of Morgan, when she hugged him, his arms were stiff and at his side, I wonder if she might have more of a role of getting Victor out of hell? will she have an ulterior motive to helping Victor? Maybe she wants him in her debt for some reason.

I suppose she could be part of the plot that is out to get him. And Victor is right to be cautious about trusting anyone at this point. But her reaction to his assassination by Taskmaster was genuine at least. And like you, I really miss that we've not seen anything about Kristoff. In my head canon, I think Doom protects him by having him kept in a separate lodging somewhere. If they stay apart it makes it harder for someone to get them both at the same time. It would have been a great scene for him if he were the regent and he was not backing down to those guys in the War Room. I can never figure out why some writers never include him as part of the people around Doom.

Loved this issue. I love how it reaffirms that the only future in which the world prospers is one where he rules. It's perfectly in line with how Stan Lee described Doom, saying he's not a villain in the traditional sense. He's shown that he's capable of ruling and ruling effectively. He's just willing to cross more lines than any hero and that bothers a lot of people. And it always will. It puts him and the heroes in a difficult positions. And given how this book ended, it'll be interesting to see how Doom comes out of this. Because we know he will. He's Doom.
