Default Doctor Doom #2 with SPOILERS in which John, Paul and Richard III are discussed

Chris Cantwell knocks another one out of the park here as Doom is visited again by Kang, finds sanctuary with Morgan Le Fay and ends up in Taskmaster's lethal crosshairs.

This creative team of Cantwell and Larocca is really clicking IMO. Cantwell gives us an exciting narrative that covers a lot of ground. It starts off with a disarmed Doom is being escorted by Stephen Strange, Silver Sable and a new iteration of H.E.R.B.I.E. to a waiting aircraft that will take him to New York. Once there he was to be incarcerated while awaiting trial at the United Nations .

But as luck would have it, Kang picks this time to drop in on Doom again, who is alone in the hold of the aircraft. Kang has also seen this future where Doom has a family and is the leader of Earth. He figures this version of Doom would be easy to defeat so he agrees to help Doom escape. Kang just lets him freefall on his own and leaves the rest of the details to Doom.

There rest of the issue takes place in New York as Doom encounters his old flame Morgan Le Fay. She's a time traveler like Doom and Kang so one is never quite sure which version we are seeing. She lives in a rent controlled apartment in Queens and she is definitely not the angry Morgan that Doom encountered back in Bendis's Mighty Avengers. This interlude is a lot of fun as Doom gets frustrated by a chatty Morgan who asks Doom who his favorite Beatle is (John)

We also see another player enter the game as Dr. Adam Brashear gets a visit from the new H.E.R.B.I.E. What's funny is that he's also annoyed by Reed and the new H.E.R.B.I.E. Hmmmm....are we seeing a pattern here with Reed? He also told Hank Pym once that he knew more about Pym Particles than he did.

Things go very bad for Doom at the end as he meets with a new actor on the scene called the Witness, who he hopes can tell him more about his death in the Future. But this is when Taskmaster makes his move.

I liked this issue just as much if not more than the first. IMO Cantwell avoids something that Bendis did in Infamous Iron Man where his overuse of the Hood got to be pretty annoying after a while. Cantwell keeps throwing different characters at Doom and the encounter with Blue Marvel is overdue. He shows us that Victor is not completely ignorant of pop culture while also having him recite a passage from the dream sequence at the end of Shakespeare's Richard III, a fitting choice since at that point of the play all of Richard's enemies are gathering at Bosworth Field.

I hope that Sal Larocca stays on this title for a while. I think an experienced artist like him is a good match for someone who's new to writing comics.

I was very pleased with this issue because something about it is: it keeps up a good pace and does not lag explaining things to us, which was something i really dislike with Bendis's writing at times, all that text isn't necessary. There is a few quiet moments before things pick up in a very fast way and Victor is being kept on his toes. I would have liked to see him a bit more on the run maybe a day or so as he avoids heroes or someone tries to mug him in New York and he takes care of it, however I can't complain when we have someone who seems to know Victor's history well.

My wish for Victor to jump into sea kinda came true XD but too bad Namor was too in Immortal Hulk spoilers:
    being a fry cook undercover
end of spoilers to help him out. lol.

Also Victor spoke about how he hated the happy version of himself thinking him to be weak. I can't wait for the next issue, this is going to be very good.

Ah, so the Witness is a brand new character after all. I knew I hadn't seen him before and the only references I could find online where to an unrelated X-men character with the same name. Limited but potentially quite useful skillset, I can see why he is in demand though. Everyone wants to cheat death sooner or later. I wonder if the Witness has ever been proven wrong?

Anyway, quite a turn of events leading into next issue if the preview cover for #3 is any indication. I'm looking forward to that reunion. Especially given the way that Infamous Iron Man ended.

Oh man, IW I forgot how you wanted Victor to jump into the sea into Namor's realm. How close you were on getting that to happen. I'm going to keep wishing for Namor to appear. And instead of Doom getting mugged, he mugged some guy to get a change of clothes!

I will keep wishing got it too! After all if Cantwell is bringing in all the people that Doom has had significant contact with; Strange, Morgan, etc then its only reasonable to think Namor may be next. Still if we get a Kristoff inclusion it would be amazing. LOL Doom does as he pleases! Victor's green hoodie is a good causal look too. I really like how without saying much it still shows that Victor isn't 100% trusting of Morgan, when she hugged him, his arms were stiff and at his side, I wonder if she might have more of a role of getting Victor out of hell? will she have an ulterior motive to helping Victor? Maybe she wants him in her debt for some reason.

I suppose she could be part of the plot that is out to get him. And Victor is right to be cautious about trusting anyone at this point. But her reaction to his assassination by Taskmaster was genuine at least. And like you, I really miss that we've not seen anything about Kristoff. In my head canon, I think Doom protects him by having him kept in a separate lodging somewhere. If they stay apart it makes it harder for someone to get them both at the same time. It would have been a great scene for him if he were the regent and he was not backing down to those guys in the War Room. I can never figure out why some writers never include him as part of the people around Doom.

Loved this issue. I love how it reaffirms that the only future in which the world prospers is one where he rules. It's perfectly in line with how Stan Lee described Doom, saying he's not a villain in the traditional sense. He's shown that he's capable of ruling and ruling effectively. He's just willing to cross more lines than any hero and that bothers a lot of people. And it always will. It puts him and the heroes in a difficult positions. And given how this book ended, it'll be interesting to see how Doom comes out of this. Because we know he will. He's Doom.

Doom mock-ironic quoting Richard III is amazing. On a meta-level, a lot of people pointed out that the real Richard III wasn't as bad a guy as Shakespeare made him out to be in that play. He was a popular King who did a lot for the poor, allowed them right to bail and so on. There's also people who think there's credible evidence he was framed for killing those "princes in the tower".

So that fits in with his current situation, framed for an attack on the moon, captured and vilified by the world as a villain, and yet popular and beloved among his people.

Doom's love for the Beatles makes sense since they were popular in Eastern Europe. A young Doom (who as per sliding timeline would have been born a generation after the Beatles would have grown up hearing them) could have heard them, and maybe the Beatles of the Marvel-verse protested against the Latverian government's anti-Romani laws.

For quite a while now I've looked at Doom as a kind of mashup of Richard III and Phantom of the Opera, except Doom plays the piano and not a concert hall pipe organ Now that you mention it, I wonder if Cantwell also thinks that Richard III was framed. I've read a few books of fiction and non-fiction on that subject, like Thomas Costain's "The Last Plantagenets" and the novels The Daughter of Time and We Speak No Treason (my favorite) plus I loved the Starz / BBC production of "the White Queen", which was all about the War of the Roses. It made me want to cast the young actor who played Richard as a young Victor von Doom. Most of the early accounts about Richard III were written during the reign of the Tudors, long after he died at Bosworth mostly due to the notoriously shifting loyalties of the Stanley brothers. So naturally they paint him as the villain and murderer. Another telling bit of evidence is treatment of the widow of Edward IV, Elizabeth Woodville. She and her daughters were welcomed to court of Richard III while he reigned. There were rumors that her daughter was going to marry him after Queen Anne died. Then you go to how Elizabeth Woodville was treated by the Tudors. It is said that she was forced into retreat at an Abbey and would not been seen at court even though her daughter was Henry VII's queen. She died 5 years later without much ceremony as would befit a former Queen and Queen Mother. But why would she be welcome at Richard III's court if he had her sons killed?

Doom and Morgan talking about the Beatles was pretty cool but I think I would move him up a bit to Queen. :-) They were one of the few big rock bands to play in Eastern Europe during the Cold War days. You can view their concert video that took place in Budapest. And another thing, Freddie Mercury's parents were born in British ruled India and were Indian Parsi. Link that to the fact that the origins of the Romani go back to the Punjab region in India.

This issue was worth it just to find out that Morgan Le Fay is an apparent audiophile hiding out in Queens. That said, Morgan, if you're reading this, there are probably more superheroes per capita in the NY area than all of the other cities in the world combined. Do spread your wings, luv. Pebble Beach would be a great hideout for someone like you.

Only thing I don't get is why Kang even wants an easily conquered earth? Isn't the point of Kang that his original time was a boring paradise, and he wanted the challenge of conquering tough eras? If Kang just wanted to shoot fish in a barrel, he could kill every hero's parents before they were conceived.

So either the writer misunderstands Kang's motivations, or Kang wants something different from what he is claiming.

Eh.. I think more than anything else Kang is bored. I think a lot of the stuff Kang does can honestly just be attributed to him looking for something to do that's halfway interesting. Doom current plight caught his interest, so he's adding himself in the mix for the heck of it.

So I'm a bit late but in short, I loved it.

I do think Victor might want this future though. We know the world ends up just fine under his rule and this isn't the first time this has been mentioned. Victor viewing that version of himself as weak might be seen as him not wanting to believe it can actually end happily given how often the heroes screw things up. Victor may just be putting on an act given that any other time he tries this things go to Hell. So being that happy and with the world being safe just seems to good to be true. And even with it being in his grasp, of course someone would take it away so why bother given how eager Kang is to take it. Still I can imagine Victor might long for something like that. If Valeria was still around he'd distance himself from her, he found love in an alternate Sue but Reed ruined that, and now seeing this with someone Victor doesn't even know and having won? Just how long before someone brings it all down again? I can imagine he'd be more than a little pessimistic despite how interested he might be in it.

I also think this might be setting up Victor's face as well. We see a fair bit of it in this issue and we get a comment about it with Victor thanking them for covering his face. Victorious is also commented on about her headgear and asks if they would ask the same of Victor. Victorious ultimately convinced Victor to put the mask back on and we see some reluctance on his end (remarking that the mask inspires fear). If anything I think Victor might eschew the mask at some point given that future has his face healed and Morgan reminding Victor that it isn't the mask that people see.

I think it's more that Cantwell is coming out and saying (through Doom last issue) that all of Kang's time traveling has made him a bit loopy.

Also, things must be going well with sales. Not only is issue #1 getting a second printing but already we have news of issue #2 getting a second printing on December 11th!

Well, yes, I was totally expecting seeing Namor Involved once Doom jumped to the water, but seems that they preferred the swimming approach. Still I'm satisfied since the issue had a good pacing as so many has appointed (we are sadly to used to the Bendis pacing) and several characters of Dooms life has been showed.

I liked the Morgana participation, but still can't erase of my mind that the last time we see her, she was claiming to Doom Blood, did she just get over it? or this is a Morgana of a time previous of that disagreement? Still Morgana being Morgana would love see Doom in debt to her, and he is right in don't be too trusting.

Also, talking about Morgana and about to get involved forgotten characters, There would be any chance to talk about Caroline Le fay? you know the Villainous Daughter off Doom and Morgana, I know that she maybe has no role to play but a mention would be nice.

I'm also expecting that in this wonderful display of Doom related character someone mentions why Kristoff who was trained by at least like solid 10 years to rule, never is shown taking the regency, well we know the editorial reason, (every writer kept forgetting about him) but I would like to see some kind of in universe reason, like they wanted the boy focused in his studies, was exiled, is hiding in other dimension or something.

About the end I now feel a bit sorry for Taskmaster, once Doom is Done with Mephisto he will want blood and Task master put his name in the list.
