Default We must rouse the continuity gods to smite the writers and editors...

    Who is with me??

So...the new Doom series (which I really love...most interesting thing they have going now)...We have Doom surrendering and being escorted to prison by Silver Sable along with others.

In ASM we find out that SS laid up from massive injuries and is remote operating LMDs to be seen in public as NOT being so bad off.

Then over in Savage Avengers....Doom...still ruling Latveria kidnaps then welcomes Conan into his castle and offers to feed him

Am I the only one around here who cares about continuity?? Is it too much to ask the editors and writers to to plan this stuff a little better??

I remember back in the day they were willing to tie things together. Back when Steve was The Captain they did the crossover with Iron Man during the Armor Wars....then in ASM they even tied into the cap book in a minor way after Viper poisoned DC and turned people into snake people...ASM had a background appearance of David Letterman mentioning "Reagan making an 'asp' of himself"

To be fair, if you're gonna mention this lack of connection between ASM#33 and Doctor Doom#2, then it should be about how Doom's situation in both are very different, since in one he's being chased because he's suspected of killing people, and in ASM#33 he's just going to US of A for diplomacy

Plus Sable in Doctor Doom#2 is very likely to be just a LMD, which she's been using in secret ever since her return, so her being there without injuries isn't an issue.

Either way, those 3 stories are happening on different times, so it's understandable why there's this lack of connection, the way it was done back then was interesting sure, but unfortunately, it's gone.

The books don’t occur at the same time, even back in the day this was the case.

Jim Shooter would not have allowed stuff like this (certainly not for stuff with Doom, one of his favorite characters) but this kind of stuff has been lax under Quesada and those who followed him.

If you want to be charitable, I think Marvel practises a non-linear approach. Much like Hickman's comics where you have flashbacks and flashforwards and so on.

Yes, Silver Sable is an LMD, and the Savage Avengers story happened the week prior when Doom was still in charge. Problem solved.
I think restorative nostalgia is the number one issue with comic book fans.
A fine distinction between two types of Nostalgia:

Reflective Nostalgia allows us to savor our memories but accepts that they are in the past
Restorative Nostalgia pushes back against the here and now, keeping us stuck trying to relive our glory days.

Don't we all just have our own version of canon and the timeline at this point?

A good story is good even if there is no continuity.

Using 'Doom' and 'Conan' in the same sentence is a pretty compelling argument......

This is it. That's all you really have to say. Once all these stories play out, you can line them up, continuity-wise, but until then you just assume that, well, they're happening at different times.

This. We saw tight continuity with the Shooter era and it continued after until Quesada dropped it. IIRC, Quesada said "We didn't have continuity in the '70s, why should we have it now". OK I'm way off in that quote but it was something along those lines.

Yeah, the only time books really need to line up with each other timewise is when they are both crossing over into company wide events. That's where writers and editors need to work on getting their ducks in a row.

Outside of that books can be taking plane days, weeks, or even months apart from each other even if they are published at the same time. It's always been that way especially for popular characters who appear in multiple books a month.

Quesada always found the most inane justifications and arguments to act whimsically.

"We didn't have continuity in the 70s" a time when Marvel Comics was basically kept afloat thanks to Roy Thomas licensing Star Wars. The Shooter era saw much higher sales by comparison.

I understand that writers and editors want to tell what they feel is the best story possible without worrying about continuity. However, I think it should be their responsibility as 'caretakers' of the characters, to make sure that they can fit their stories into the history that other writers laid out for these beloved characters.

The stories will be better if writers are at liberty to treat continuity like a buffet rather than a straitjacket.
