Default 5 "new twists" for a new Wonder Woman project

Let's say there's a new Wonder Woman project on the horizon. Totally new, with no direct connection to any current or previous incarnation.

Could be a new movie, new TV show, new cartoon, new video game, new AU comic book series, new Broadway play, whatever. It's new and completely focused on Wonder Woman.

Those in charge don't just want a retread of old ideas. They want a twist or two that hasn't been done in any major way before with Wonder Woman.

Could be her appearance, her origin/ backstory, her powers, her personality, her occupation, her methods, her supporting cast, her rogues gallery, her settings.

They want a couple twists that will make this Wonderverse project stand out positively from what has come before.

They want a list of 5 proposed new twists to the Wonderverse mythos, of which they'll incorporate at least 2 of them.

What would be on your list of 5 new twists on the Wonder Woman of this new project (you can specify your preferred medium if you like)?

Note: you can, and should, have some competing ideas/ twists. They're not looking for a cohesive series bible from you, just separate new ideas.

1st draft, regardless of medium ...

    1. Diana is, and always has been, a full-fledged goddess of the Greco-Roman pantheon.

Not a demigod. Not clay blest by the gods. Not a bastard born of adultery. A full goddess, born of two pure gods for parents: her biological mother Athena and her biological father Hephaestus.

    2. Diana's ultimate enemy is the walking embodiment of patriarchy (and secretly, her own grandfather): Zeus.

Zeus is the whole reason that Diana's origin was kept from her. Athena and Hephaestus are secretly married, but never told anyone of their relationship or their progeny. If Zeus found out that her parents had a pure blood child, he'd realize Diana is the one prophesied to eventually depose him and kill her (and her parents).

    3. Diana's bracelets conceal her godhood from Zeus and everyone except her parents (who assume human form to separately and discretely interact with her).

She takes them off, she goes god mode, on par with Marvel's Thor with his hammer. With them on, she's far closer to the average Amazon (above Spider-man level).

    4. Queen Hippolyta is Athena in human guise.

Athena is the sole public supporter of the Amazons. She created Paradise Island and led the first battered women she found across the world to there as a place of refuge. It is unclear if she was always Hippolyta or if she assumed Hippolyta's identity at some point. She splits time between Paradise Island and Olympus to allay Zeus' suspicions.

    5. Hephaestus assumes the form of a mortal man who alone is granted "permission" to live on Paradise Island.

Unlike his wife (whom he quietly visits nightly), he has zero desire to rule anything or call attention to himself. He maintains the appearance of a simple lonesome blacksmith and shepherd named, um, "Jeebus" (I dunno, pick a more appropriate alias). He also splits time between Paradise Island and Olympus to allay Zeus' suspicions.

1: When not superheroing, Diana spends most of her time on Transformation island trying to help the villains kept there. The idea being that she's taking a personal interest in their well being, and not just getting rid of them.

2: Have WW and Black Canary do a joint training program for younger superheroines. This would include having characters like Supergirl, Batgirl and Artemis doing Amazon training on Themiscyra.

3: Ares has no desire to seduce Hippolyta. Other Amazons maybe, but not the daughter who has brought him centuries of both annoyance and pride.

Wonder Woman: The Ballet - Set and choreographed to modern dance music.

Gods and Monsters: The Musical - Set in the 1940s, with modern music, but influenced by jazz and swing music.

Amazons Are Forever or On Her Majesty's Secret Service - Action/adventure espionage film series where Diana Prince meets James Bond. When Queen Elizabeth and Queen Hippolyta send their best agents on parallel missions, will Agent 007 and Agent Prince coordinate or clash to achieve their target and goals? Will ARGUS agent Steve Trevor and Miss Moneypenny gain each other's trust when they are thrust into dire circumstances of their own together? Can Q help all four agents in time when Etta Candy reveals some extraordinary Amazon tech to him? Will all this be enough to stop the threat of the SPECTRE and CYBER criminal organizations and their many enhanced agents? Plus, a new Bond Girl is introduced and the debut of the very first Diana Dude!

Wonder Women: A Netflix Standup Comedy Special - A two-hour comedy event where 12 comedians (Wanda Sykes, Ali Wong, etc.) do ten minutes each of standup based on their observations of Wonder Woman, her history, her story, her past tokenism, her membership in the Justice League, her pop culture contributions and appearances, and her iconography.

Wonder Woman - An HBO Max series in the vein of A Game of Thrones. When the ultimate danger threatens Patriarch's World, the Amazing Amazon appears to save us from it and from ourselves. Bringing with her a world of myth, magic, majesty, morality, and mayhem, not everyone in the world is quite sure how to take or handle the debut of this wondrous woman and her sensational powers or progressive ethics and impassioned empathy. I mean, "Who is Wonder Woman? The series would weave together all of the best of the Wonder Woman mythos and history and Amazons and allies and adversaries and and action and adventure and unite it in an intriguing epic and dramatic tale that explores and dissects our culture and sociopolitical issues from an outsider's everyday, and messianic, and superheroic POV.

I'm generally sceptical of twists; often they tend to be become rather shallow in execution and far too dependant on a prior shared understanding of the character or characters. They seldom manage to say something new or interesting about the character.

But here are some of my ideas on how to develop either a wholly new project or Wonder Woman in continuity:

"The Six Patrons". Pérez had Diana get her powers as blessings from Demeter, Aphrodite, Athena, Artemis, Hestia, and Hermes. (Rucka largely did the same, but sadly and inexplicably exchanged Hestia for Hephaestus.) A set of six one-shot stories focusing on each of these blessings, and possibly on Diana's thoughts on that particular patron. Having the stories be non-mythological in plot and adversaries would be a big plus.

"The New Amazons". Basically A-Force. Don't care if it's post-apocalyptic or not, but the team must include Poison Ivy.

"The Old Amazons", aka get the Bana-Mighdall right. The split between the Themysciran and Bana-Mighdall Amazons wasn't on renouncing violence, but because the original mission of the Amazons to bring civilisation to man was split into two after they freed themselves from slavery under Heracles: one to preserve knowledge and hold guard; one to still teach mankind and learn from them. Add in the poetry of Sappho, who I here would depict as an Amazon that wasn't touched by the events, but also thus ended up without any contact with her sisters.

"The Choice". An arc focused on Steve Trevor, where at the conclusion he leaves the military.
«Speaking generally, it is because of the desire of the tragic poets for the marvellous that so varied and inconsistent an account of Medea has been given out» (Diodorus Siculus, The Library of History [4.56.1])

    1. Circe is a former Amazon who wanted to learn magic.
    2. Godwatch is a secret society that wants to destroy all gods and has been around for many centuries.
    3. Diana has left the island many times and every time she dies her body turns back to clay and is magically sent back to the island to be "rebuild".
    4. Etta is a descendant of Aphrodite.
    5. Captain Wonder is just Diana pretending too be a male hero.

This sounds like a neat idea and a way to 'reboot' Wonder Woman.

In fact, it would work perfectly in the context of the rumored new DC timeline. You could have a Golden Age Wonder Woman who served with the JSA. She dies and is reborn/rebuilt on Themyscera as the modern Wonder Woman who then joins the JLA. That way, you can have Wonder Woman be part of both eras, have her still be Diana, while still allowing a version of her to be contemporary, experience-wise, with Superman, Batman and the other Silver Age Leaguers.

1 Cheetah (originally, Minerva) is a fallen, once heroic, Amazon, banished for some great crime against Athena, who wiped her memory and turned her into a monster.

2 Mala is a permanent regular in WW. As in the Golden Age, she serves as Diana's aide in Man's World, ..frequently travelling between Paradise and Diana's new home.

3 Steve 'Trevor' is actually Steve Brilyant, estranged from a sinister family, plotting to take over the world. He changed his name and joined ARGUS to escape their control over his life.

4 Steve has a rival in Morgan Tracy, a bookish, quirky ARGUS agent.

5 Etta is a permanent regular in the WW comic. Wonder Woman lives, with Etta Candy.
