Default Your Favorite Moments In Super-Cinema!!

Was talking in another thread about the scenes in Superman Returns where Clark catches the plane, and the one where the bullet bounces off his eye. As awful as that movie is, those moments are just fantastic. And it got me thinking, what's everyone's favorite, most Superman-like moments from his larger media stuff? Movies, tv shows, cartoons, whatever. If it's a cool moment of Superman doing something Super, share it!

Not sure if anyone's interested enough in this to justify a thread but I figured it might be worth it.

Let's not bitch too much about stuff though, yeah? We all know Returns was boring and MoS had too much destruction porn and the old DCAU was handicapped by Timm's Bat-obsession, yadda yadda. This thread is just for the moments where the character really shines through and made you smile.

    Mine are probably pretty basic:

The “Plane Rescue” from Superman Returns is my absolute favorite. That’s just “Superman” to me. I’ll literally just cue that up and watch it randomly.

The first flight scene in Man of Steel is another great scene, but I’ll watch the last trailer for Man if Steel too. It was a great trailer and just really is a great bit of Superman.

I’ve watched the Reeve Clark/Superman transformation gif a million times as well. That and Lois’ interview with him from Superman 1 are probably my favorite scenes after the Returns rescue.

Hoechlin’s Superman saving the family from Gotham, then giving the kid the wink. I liked him in that whole episode, but that sold me on him.

The Flash scene from Justice League. His “oh ****” moment when Clark turns his head and tracks him. Loved that.

The barn dance from “Homecoming”. Cause I’m a big ole softee and like my Superman romance.

Superman main theme by John Williams in the opening credits to Superman (1978).
Superman's plane rescue in Superman (1978).
Superman vs. General Zod, Ursa and Non in Superman II (1980)
Superman III (1983) has one redeeming part to it, Clark Kent fights Bad Superman in the junkyard.
Batman and Superman in The Batman Superman Movie: World's Finest (1997).

To have a director like Lester do Superman, to me, gave a very goofy retro charm. The opening of Superman III is still unique in that it describes its setting and sums up the overall direction while managing to live independently as a mini story. Having the character sneak into the movie is kinda perfect.

Chris Sims of the Comics Alliance site said it well in a review from some years ago:

These are people who can't even go to work without getting set on fire by robot penguins.

    No wonder they need Superman.

It builds to exactly the same kind of weird premise that you'd see in a Silver Age comic, where a guy is in danger of literally drowning in his car. I can see the "How did this man drown -- on the middle of a crowded street?!" as a cover blurb on a Cary Bates comic.

I also like that there's a dude with a gun robbing a bank that Superman does absolutely nothing to stop. The cops can handle that, Superman is there for the weird stuff.
Generally I go for smaller moments. Like how Reeve could sell Clark with that unconvincing confidence in any line.
And I like the contrast between his bumbling word vomit and how Superman would speak succinctly without force. Clark eating dog food, the look on Kidder's face at the end, that type of stuff. But the transformation of Vera is such a strangely vivid memory from my childhood.

Man of Steel... I did like the fast paced action through and through. But I loved the interrogation as a scene for Cav-El.

"General, would you care to step outside?"

The calm and confidence he exuded in that moment, as he basically stepped up to 3 soldiers as strong as he is and told them to bring it on. No fear. No hesitation. I'm Superman and you're the badguys, and this ends now.

I think there's a moment in Man of Steel where the world engine is ripping up the ocean and Clark is about to go stop it. Lois points out that he'll be weaker and could die and he doesn't hesitate. "That's no reason not to try".

I'd agree with almost all of this thread as to the great moments. I'd add that it's part of the problem, Superman on screen, especially the big one, has tons of great moments, but few really great screen stories. MoS actually had a bunch of cool moments, and Returns even more, but neither were good movies. And really, while goofy fun, neither was Superman II, but it still had its share of great moments. Now what Superman needs is for someone to put those moments into a new great movie.

Pa Kent has had some very fine actors play him in various media, but the finest IMO, and the very best portrayal was indeed the great Glenn Ford, who projected such midwestern decency and seemed just so good that you not only got where Chris Reeves' Superman came from, but it also made that death scene so affecting. And that first fight was magic. Actually, there was a lot of good scenes of the joy that Reeves' Superman took in his powers, especially flight, that apart from the one good scene in the 1984 Supergirl movie, SG's own joy in her powers scene, a sort of aerial ballet, is about the only movie scene I can think of where SM isn't either moaning about how he's a miserable alien destined to be alone or somesuch that the modern film guys like so much, or simply treating them as tools independent of joy, as in Returns.

Reeve Superman’s interview with Lois. Great chemistry between the two leads, showcases Clark’s mischievous/playful side, and also shows his big flaw when he lies to her about not being Clark.

MOS First Flight was great. Love the All-Star homage.

DCAU Superman in S:TAS revealing his identity to Lois in a sarcastic way when Lois asks him how he keeps scooping her was hilarious. When he went to go beat the hell out of Darkseid in the series finale was amazing. Loved the “Late Great Mr. Kent” episode, particularly when he talks about why he needs Clark. In JL, when he refuses to cross the line and kill Luthor was a great moment too.

Plane Rescue from Returns is perfect Superman.

His dying words to Lois in the animated Death of Superman tugged on my cynical stone cold heart.

"You're a monster Zod, I'm going to stop you."

Also pretty partial to Kal taking the blast from the World Engine to his chest.

On Smallville, Clark stopping the nuke.

In SUPERMAN VS THE MOLE MEN...pretty much everything tbh. That thing is perfect.

"The Late Mr Kent" has to be one of my favorite Superman stories in any medium. I'm also a big fan of "Honeymoon in Metropolis," an L&C episode where Clark and Lois pretend to be married in the honeymoon suite at the Lexor hotel, in order to spy on the corrupt politician and munitions magnates making a shady deal in an office across the street.

People are also right to point out the action scenes in Superman Returns. Yeah, the plane crash especially stands out, but honestly the whole movie has some stellar and awesome action scenes, including the bank robbery, various rescues during Luthor's engineered Earthquake, and yeah, Superman picking up a continent and throwing it into space is pretty awesome too, ultimately. There's some really good emotional scenes with Clark as well. I'm convinced Routh played the greatest "mild-mannered" Clark in the history of the character on film. He always seems legitimately awkward and emotionally nervous, rather than like he's putting it on, as I often felt for Reeve in his first two movies, and I really appreciate that.

Man of Steel has some phenomenal fight scenes, but also a lot of really great character work. I love how calm and understatedly confident Superman is when dealing with the military.

    Yessss

Maybe my favorite single moment in any Superman movie comes from Superman and the Mole Men, when an angry mob is trying to break into a hospital to kill one of the mole men for, well, existing. Superman, obviously being something of an outsider himself, as well as a moral paragon, takes a strong side against their small-minded fear mongering and thoughtless inclination toward violence, and places himself, not for the first time, between the mob and their would-be victim inside the hospital. One of the mob shoots Superman, predictably doing nothing to him. Superman, with a controlled, explains that the bullet could have bounced off and hurt somebody else, Miss Lane, for instance, and that therefore, these people clearly have no idea what they're doing with guns. Thus, like a parent taking toys away from an unruly child, he walks into the crowd and just starts taking their guns away. I feel like in 2019, after decades of guns becoming a highly partisan political issue, you could never get away with showing that in a movie, but 1951 Superman wasn't messing around with this crap! I absolutely love that whole movie, despite having basically no budget at all to speak of and laughable special effects. It's a really solid simple morality tale and that's just one moment of it.

To me the greatest scene in any film is Martha in the morning looking for Clark out the screendoor of the farmhouse then walking out through the fields of golden grain to her son standing there, the big sky overheard. It's less about the dialogue (looped in later) and more about the acting and the cinematography. The scene is iconic, a young man leaving home and his mother, wanting to keep him from going but knowing she has to let go.

In one of the old Superfriends eps people think Superman is dead because he turned green and passed out after being exposed to a mountain sized chunk of Kryptonite on an alien planet.

So Darkseid does this speech about how he's disappointed that a bizarre accident robbed him of the chance to kill Superman, then tells his generals it's time to invade Earth.

So dozens of boom tubes open in the sky and an armada of Apokoliptian ships appears as Darkseid orders the JL to surrender. They try to fight and it seems hopeless at first, until suddenly Superman shows up and starts smashing Darkseid's armada.

Thinking it over, oddly enough, my favorite moment has to be one that doesn't even include any actors, Superman or otherwise. Its when John Williams' theme music picks up in the opening credits, and the S blasts onto the screen with those still-unique visual and sound effects.
