I found Blofield kinda annoying in the last movie, but on paper you'd think Waltz would be perfect casting for the character. So maybe he'll be better in this one.

It didn't help that the big twist was right out of Austin Powers III.

I found Waltz surprisingly dull in that film. His performance was just so, one-note. And after the cold creepiness of Mads Mikkelsen and entertaining craziness of Javier Bardem, it felt like a real step down. Heck Dave Bautista was a more entertaining baddie than Blofeld was and was taken out of the film FAR too quickly.

Anyway this looks really good. The direction and cinematography look great, the action looks fun. Madeleine looks like she might actually be important in this film, which is cool if so (hopefully Lea Seydoux gets better material to work with this time around), Rami Malik looks suitably creepy for what we see of him and I love his voice. Ana de Armas looks PERFECT and I'm so hoping they don't waste her like they did Gemma Arterton and Monica Bellucci.

Also Lashana Lynch looks pretty badass here as well. I'm cautiously optimistic so far.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed that. I really liked the movie up until Bond ended up at that ski resort place.

That said, Craig's Bond has won enough good faith from me with Casino Royal and Skyfall that I'm likely to see this opening night.

Bond is reacting to M's line about him potentially losing control when meeting with Blofeld. He pauses because Madeline's there too. "I'm not going to lose....control."


BTW the Oberhauser backstory is from the books, just not really the stepfather angle. It's the OCTOPUSSY short story. Basically this British Major Smythe locates Nazi gold, but kills his mountain guide Oberhauser, who was an old mentor of Bond's. Later Bond tracks him down. The Smythe story was used for Octopussy's backstory in the movie version, and in SPECTRE Smythe is replaced by Oberhauser's son.

Casino Royale was the first Bond I ever bought (though I had recorded several off TV over the years). I thought it was great - solid plot, a "Bond girl" who was actually a great character (I think Vesper is up there with Tracy as the best of Bond's love interests), and much better choreographed action than usual. It made me excited for the franchise again.

Quantum of Solace unfortunately was a misfire for me, though it had some great things in it, and as someone once pointed out to me, unusually for a Bond film its plot actually makes sense. Still, there was a lot about it that I didn't like.

Skyfall, though not "the best Bond ever" as some reviews tried to label it, is a great Bond movie that gets an attack of the stupids every so often (omniscient bad-guy plot, and that stupid underground train crashing through the wall nonsense), but altogether I think it's great.

Spectre was, for me, just flat-out bad. They threw so much money at it, but apart from the wonderful visual at the start with the carnival, I find the whole film both boring and just badly conceived. I might actually hate the movie.

The fact the new film seems to be carrying on the plot-threads from Spectre makes me wonder if I will actually see this Bond film at the cinema, and apart from Moonraker, Octopussy, and Never Say Never Again, I've seen every Bond since The Spy Who Loved Me on the big screen.

I think as much as I've liked Craig, I'm ready for him to move on. I hope the fight choreography is improved up to Bourne, John Wick, Atomic Blonde standards for the next Bond, as I think that's more important to me that big explosions or stunts.

I've really enjoyed Daniel Craig as Bond so I'm glad we got the 5th movie out of him. Looking forward to this.

Craig might be my second favorite Bond (after Connery) and if they go the rumoured gay/female/black Bond route after this, I'm going to be out for sure.

Even Connery at his best was rendered useless the minute you put him up against a heavy hitter like Oddjob. Moore no way. Lazenby had decent fight scenese but you never believed he was doing it. Dalton could have with more material. Brosnan was similar to Connery in a way but with slightly less success in fights

The first 3 were Fall releases (Sept/Oct) and then Goldfinger broke out so Thunderball which was billed as the biggest of the franchise got a December release. They kinda kept it at a Christmas release for a few years then in Moore's tenure they started making them summer blockbusters (that was really the era of he summer blockbuster) and they did it throughout (except Golden Gun) until License to Kill as you said. Then they made it a November tradition.

When a Bond film flops they usually try to go back basics.

Maybe because I saw him in the Layer Cake first. But nah doesn't come across as a ass-whipper or ladies man to me. I'd put Connery and Brosnan above him.
