Default The new "Create your own International Super Hero Team Challenge" with a twist!

The Challenge: Create an international team of DC heroes (ala the Global Guardians) using this criteria:

    * One hero per country.
    * Booster Gold is NOT Canadian. He's probably the most American superhero there is. THE! MOST! Including Captain America and Uncle Sam.
    * Fictional DC countries count...so feel free to add Amazons, Atlanteans, Markovians, etc.
    * Being an alien doesn't count. Aliens are other planets. I'm looking for countries. Aliens can be added, but will represent the country they're a citizen of on earth.

    And finally....

No stereotypes! And before anyone gets upset, let me clarify:

    * No hero on the team may have a costume based on the flag of their country.
    * No hero may have a superhero power or motif solely based on an animal indigenous to their country.
    * No hero can be from, or be based on, the mythology, history, or folklore of their country.
    * No hero can be armed with the weapons made famous by their country.
    * And finally....no one can have a "magic sword" based on the sword most associated with their country (with magic powers).

On the other hand, once you've done the above, feel free to make an entire team based WITH the above criteria. I would LOVE to see a book called "The International Team of Magic Sword Wielders" or "The League of Knight Themed British Characters".

    Thanks in advance!

Next ask Disneyland to design It's A Small World using those same "rules". LOL!

    12 to start a team;

Blue Beetle - (Kord & Jaime as team) - USA
    Dr. Light (Hoshi) - Japan
    Iman - Mexico
    Jet -Jamaica
    Dodger - UK
    Striker Z -China
    Sandstorm - Syria
    Vostok-X - Russia
    Solstice- India
    Extraño -Peru
Dark Ranger- Australia(unless Rangers count as folklore the way cowboys might for US?)
    Chrysalis -France
David Zavimbe (desgns own tech suit)- Democratic Republic of Congo
    La Sangre -Spain

Would add Fire/Fury - Brazil (as I don't think she's based on any legit mythology/folklore but i'll leave her off just in case, same for Ice(Maiden))

For the record in case some take this as a condemnation of an avenue for creating more diverse heroes. I think many of the motifs which appear on flags, regional specific mythologies and folklore, region specific animals, natural phenomena, and specific weapons (also tied to those people and myth), are actually a great source for creating new heroes. And can definitely and successfully be used as a springboard, for material, fantastic powers and themes, and are absolutely in the spirit of the super hero genre, and should absolutely be mined for creating more new and diverse characters.
It's only a problem if that is all that is ever said about that character or people, and that one character is your only representation for an entire people.

Oh. I am ALL for diversity. I grew up in a very diverse family as far as both race and sexuality. I just created this excercise because I think it's funny that, for instance if a US hero got lightning powers s/he could call themselves anything that had to do with lightning, but if the same character happened to be British, they have to be called Knightning Bolt or Light Knight, etc. (plus they'd have a sidekick named Fire Squire). It's like, "I get it. They're British."

Oh I get it, I actually appreciate the exercise, as what you describe there is exactly what happens. (It's the impetus of the HB created Super Friends members and the Global Guardians)
Just wanted to also make clear, many of these same themes do work as great springboards for creating new characters. it just becomes a problem if you stop there, so identifying characters who broke the trend, is absolutely important!
    Great thread!

Etrigan would have been my first choice for England, but he's tied to Merlin and Arthurian mythology / folklore of the region.

Meh; to me he’s just a demon.

    EDIT
Found a character to replace Etrigan I actually prefer as team leader. I renamed him THE Carnation, as I already had a Captain, in Captain Triumph.

(I'll compliment the line ups after more are posted)

DL/PPG parodied the trend with their Agents of AWSM!
Your team would fit right in!

    Missing Comrade-Red, Sam-R-I and Tiki-Torch!

Well besides the intentional ethnic cliches, the whole parody was also in some of their names in reference to their "Member"ship, in the club. Which was so in your face blatant it looks like it went over many heads. (I'll leave how the China collective fits for people to ponder themselves)
Of course this aired just before social media explosion like Twitthead and Instigratz, where people proclaim their online virtue and self importance by signaling they are outraged by something.
Then any post or discussion could be spun on CBR and other places, into clickbait headlines as look "PEOPLE" outraged .......!.
Yeah, if it had aired just four or five years after it did, it would have been outright condemned.

You need to start one of these in the Marvel Forum, BTW.
