Default Marvel to Shutter Television Divison

Marvel’s television division is officially winding down.

Variety has learned that Marvel Television will no longer be developing any new series beyond the shows that are currently in production. According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, Marvel will eliminate a number of positions in the near future as a result of the cessation of development at the division. Karim Zreik, senior vice president of current programming and production and members of his team will now join the Marvel Studios group. Zreik will lead the current projects in production. Marvel TV head Jeph Loeb will remain with the division during the transition.

The move to close up shop on Marvel Television was not altogether unexpected, as Variety reported in September that there was a growing perception in the industry that Loeb’s division was on its way out given that Marvel movies boss Kevin Feige was set to produce a number of big budget live-action shows for Disney Plus featuring character from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Shortly thereafter, it was announced that Feige had been promoted to chief creative officer of Marvel and has taken over the Disney-owned company’s storytelling across mediums, including publishing, film, TV, and animation. It was widely believed at that time that Loeb would exit the company within the next few months.

he only Marvel Television live-action show currently in the works is “Helstrom” at Hulu. Hulu had previously ordered a live-action “Ghost Rider” series starring Gabriel Luna as well, but that project was scrapped in September.

Marvel also has four animated shows at Hulu: “Howard the Duck,” “Hit Monkey,” “Tigra & Dazzler,” and “M.O.D.O.K.” All four shows are expected to debut separately before crossing over with “The Offenders” event series. However, news broke last week that the showrunner and writing staff of “Tigra & Dazzler” had departed the show over creative differences. The search for a new showrunner is ongoing.

Fellow Marvel-Hulu series “The Runaways” will end with its upcoming third season, while “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D” will end after seven seasons on ABC this spring. All of Marvel Television’s other live-action shows have been canceled in the past year.

Feige’s division — part of the Walt Disney Studios feature-film operation — is currently working on shows centered on characters like Hawkeye, Falcon and Winter Soldier, as well as Loki, and Vision and Scarlet Witch, with shows based on She-Hulk, Ms. Marvel, and Moon Knight also in the works.

According to sources, all Marvel Television and Home & Family Entertainment executives at the vice president level and above outside of Zreik’s team will be replaced as a result of the move. In addition, sources say that Brian Crosby, creative director of Marvel Themed Entertainment, will no longer be working on Marvel projects as part of the Disney parks division, though he will remain with the company.

Also exiting the company is family entertainment chief Cort Lane. A Marvel veteran in charge of television animation, Lane has deep relationships with counterparts in Disney’s corporate-franchises, parks and consumer-products arms, as well as with licensees such as Hasbro and Lego. He is believed to be staying on through January as part of the transition, as Marvel gears up for its first major TV entry in the preschool space, “Marvel’s Spidey and His Amazing Friends.”

I think this was expected with Fiege's promotion.

It was a good run, but these things are cyclical and never last forever, especially when oversaturation occurs.

I don't think they'll ever find a new showrunner for Tigra and Dazzler. Instead it and the other Offenders cartoons are as dead as New Warriors.

So, no more Marvel TV, or just contracting it out to other studios?

It made sense this would happen. Marvel TV just had no purpose after Marvel Studios started making TV shows of their own, one's that are actually connected to the MCU. It was completely redundant.

Hmm. This all makes sense. The MCU evolves its "cinematic" presence to include the small screen. I hope this means we'll start seeing high-quality animated series that are part of the MCU as well. Also, this is wonderful news for two reasons: 1. I'm sure a majority, if not all, of the new shows will be on Disney+, which means there's a higher chance for obscure and whacky ideas/concepts/properties to get adapted, and 2. It'll mean an overall higher quality budget for any shows moving forward.

I think we all saw this coming. The signs were pretty clear for over a year now. It's the end of an era, truly. But hopefully the next one will be good for Marvel and the MCU.

From my understanding of the article, they're saying that anything in current production for Marvel Televison is now under Marvel Studios' supervision, right? That leaves Helstrom in an interesting spot, because it started as a Marvel TV production, but now it'll be a Marvel Studios production by the time it finishes production. They could've cancelled the whole thing like they did with GR if they knew what was coming, but they allowed the production to go on this far... so I wonder if Kevin Feige has any plans for this franchise in the MCU, or if this is just a charity last project for Marvel TV.

I don't believe the animated shows will go forward, honestly. It seems like they were still in pre-production, unlike Helstrom that's in the middle of actual production, so it's probably easier to get rid of the projects while they're only being scripted.

Not "contracting it out", all TV shows are now made by Marvel Studios itself. Rather than just being the film division, they will be producing everything.

As soon as it was announced that Feige would be calling all the shots and that Loeb was out, shutting down the TV division and folding it into Marvel Studios was a foregone conclusion.

I think so too. Bummer as these shows all sounded like fun, especially Patton Oswalt as M.O.D.O.K..

Oh well, I'm sure what Marvel Studios has in store will be more than enough to make up for it.

Hopefully we'll start hear news of some good Marvel animated series soon. That's been my biggest hope since the restructure.

Quesada continues his downward slide into Marvel irrelevance. He was once CCO of all adaptations, then it was just TV and games, including the crappy cartoons he produced. Now he's not CCO and he's not involved in TV anymore.

I'd really rather get original cartoons rather then cartoons set in the MCU. I mean, I want good cartoons above all, but I'd really rather they not have to be centered around MCU like the past era of animation was.

If I'm worried about anything, it's that all media content for Marvel will have to cater to the MCU even more then it already has.

This also confirms that nothing on TV or non-Disney streaming services are canon. So they can reboot anything they feel like rebooting, or have it disappear forever.
