Once they started putting UPC boxes on comic book covers, I could never feel the same about comic book covers again. Those eyesores always detract from the beauty of the work. And I can't forget the first issue cover of THE NEW TEEN TITANS had one of them boxes--so the scan on this thread must be from a version that was redone to get rid of the UPC beast--other features look doctored, as well, like the glowy effects. This seems to happen a lot with covers. For instance the original ALL-STAR COMICS No. 3 cover is often reprinted to look different from the original.
I'd never forget it, just didn't think the SC Comics Presents #26 cover warranted the Icon status as much as the visual of Titans #1 did.
I do love that Green Lantern v Superman cover though , and as they intended their bonus feature lead right into me buying and becoming a New Titans reader.
Other issues I know I bought that same month July 1980-
Are:
Justice League of America #183 the start of the Crisis JLA New Gods crossover, which was a great JL arc.
Actually the next months issue #184 by George Perez would make my Iconic cover list
And from Marvel that month I bought;
Avengers #200 (another George Perez cover)
Power Man and Iron Fist #65 which guested El Aguila LOL!
Probably that Conan #115
Thor #300
and X-Men #138 which I would also count as Iconic, for the Marvel thread and of course X-Men #136 from a couple of months before, which was referenced earlier in the thread.

Swamp Thing had quite a few iconic covers (especially Alan Moore's "The Anatomy Lesson"):

Jerry Ordway begins his epic run on The Power of SHAZAM!
Not a DC cover, but an iconic Fawcett cover.
CAPTAIN MARVEL ADVENTURES No. 18, painted by C.C. Beck. Of course, it's been subsequently used and adapted by DC.
^^^Since it seems alright to post iconic covers from Fawcett, these would then be My Top 3:
