I wouldn't want them to risk financial seppuku, or anything, but I also would love to read a book where the writers took it as a challenge to build a team out of mutants with 100-200 ish appearances, and not the 'big names.'

Just start with Cecelia Reyes, at the bottom of that list, and pick a few more from those with less than 300 appearances, like Bling!, Genesis, Pete Wisdom, Oya, Dust, Hellion or Madison Jeffries. Mix it up. Skip anyone with a connection to one of the top 10, like regenerating claw-mutants or bright-haired telepath/telekinetics who may or may not be Phoenix hosts.

And quite the contrast from the 1966-1970 X-Men run, which was more directionless. That era did introduce Banshee, Polaris, Havok, and Sunfire though, which I'm sure also deserves recognition.

He also wrote at a time before nostalgia really smacked the franchise in the roster and the sliding time scale fully took hold, so new characters actually had an opportunity to gain traction. I mean seriously, if Wolverine made his first appearance in 2015 does anyone here REALLY think he'd have become the same fixture in the franchise?

Yes, It is nature of comics to milk cash cows. See Harley Quinn or Deadpool. We have seen fewer because both comic fans and comic companies are nostalgia hos but once company like Marvel recognize that character they have is "gold" they will push them down the fan throats. So yes the right character can become a fixture in the franchise it is a little harder because companies won't completely give up on older character(even when they aren't effective) and it makes a little difficult for certain characters to reach full potential. So characters like Cannonball, Sunspot, Moonstar, Synch, M, Jubilee, Armor, Prodigy, Surge, Hope, etc they will have problems going forward because Cyclops will always get pushed to front as leader and they need time as legit leaders to fully hit their potential. While character who is in the "bad boy" or "sex symbol" mold could easier break out because there isn't always a character in that lane. Which is why Quire has managed to keep showing up.
