To be fair, it's canon that Miles had a parent missing. His mother died in 1610 but was resurrected when the Morales family was sent to 616. That's what's being adapted if he only has his Dad around.

A lot of that is network or studio driven. See Static and Static Shock. WB wanted his father gone and pretty much insisted Static come from a one parent home.
