I am not sure if they were ever clear on this one. Frankie Raye died...but the Silver Surfer kind of brought her soul back to Earth and put it in Frances Hyatt...or something like that....in this series.

Without commenting on my feelings on these options, I would take Mark Waid into consideration when trying to figure out who is meany by the old flame. Waid's run may be a factor in who it is. It might also be a new character altogether. But considering Waid and his encyclopedic knowledge of comics, I'm guessing we're starting with a very big list. But since this is a big concept story and using fairly iconic folks already, I wouldn't think Waid would introduce a new past acquaintance. Because it's Neal Adams' bucket list FF story, I'd be incline to say Crystal as she may be the most well known.

I occasionally look at youtube videos with 'spoilers' or trends in the MCU, and today, I saw one that suggests that there will be a role for a Frankie Race as Johnny's girlfriend in a plot that sounds like the original Galactus/Nova plot during Byrne's run. I loved the stories with Nova, mostly as the female human torch. Didn't like Johnny losing his love again. So to me those, Crystal and Johnny are the definitive romances of Johnny's life. I would like to see both done justice for the MCU, but in terms of the comic, probably can never recapture that 'thing' of the original story. To me, it is the Romeo and Juliet story of the Marvel universe. And that means a tragedy.
