Default Master of the Mystic Arts: Doctor Strange Appreciation 2020

Long, long ago there was a young neurosurgeon named Stephen Vincent Strange, and he was about to make the big time. He had everything the world considers success -- talent, youth, wealth, looks -- but he had no heart. Then fate and his own carelessness caught up with him and stripped him of his career in a single moment. Suddenly, nothing he had was of any value; he deserted his colleagues, was deserted by his friends, and spent his entire fortune seeking a cure for his ruined hands. In desperation, he used the last of his resources to chase a scrap of hope -- the rumor of an Ancient One, far away in the mountains of Tibet, who could work miracles.

Doctor Strange found the old monk and demanded help, but the Ancient One could see that, underneath the wretchedness, he was just as uncaring as ever. He knew that Strange needed a change of heart more than he needed working hands, and offered to let him stay and learn from him. Strange, hurt and angry, called the ancient mystic a fraud and would have left at that moment except that a blizzard suddenly arose, preventing his escape. He was snowbound in the monastery with the Ancient One and his disciples, stewing in his own bitterness.

Then at last came the moment when he realized the Ancient One's most trusted disciple, Baron Mordo, was plotting to murder his master. Strange rushed to interfere, but Mordo turned dark magic on him to silence him. Faced all at once with the stunning knowledge that EVIL magic is very much real, Strange finally let his self interest go. He humbled himself before the Ancient One and asked to learn magic as well, hoping to save the old master from his deceptive disciple. Pleased to have reached Strange's heart at last, the Ancient One accepted him, freed him from Mordo's spell, and sent his former student away.

Since then, Strange has been fulfilling his silent vow to take a stand against dark magic. His adventures have taken him in and out of the hidden pockets of reality, from Eternity's domain to the throne room of the Dread Dormammu. He has primarily stood alone. He has suffered loneliness, anonymity, and a growing sense of isolation from the rest of the world, but his career has been filled with unexpected joys -- the undying loyalty of his assistant Wong, the respect of the superhero community, the turbulent friendship of the Defenders, and the love of many noble women, particularly Clea, heir to the Dark Dimension. He has allied with Doctor Doom. He has defeated Shuma-Gorath in his own dimension. He has argued with the Living Tribunal, faced down the Scarlet Witch, and ridden the winged horse Aragorn. In some cases he prevails by strength of arms, but in far more he succeeds by keeping calm, cleverly using what he has on hand, and never, EVER giving up.

All hail the master, Doctor Strange, ambassador of the mystic arts to the Marvel universe. May his star never fade.

    RECOMMENDED READING

Greatest Dr. Strange Stories Ever Told

"A Separate Reality" (collects Marvel Premiere #9, 10, 12-14, and Doctor Strange #1, 2, 4, 5) Dr. Strange becomes Sorcerer Supreme by making the toughest choice of his life, Baron Mordo and confronting GOD(?) and his first battle with Silver Dagger. -- NightMage

Triumph and Torment -- DigiCom (formerly Beware Of Geek)
Doctor Strange and Doctor Doom and Roger Stern and Mike Mignola, what more needs to be said? -- Reviresco

Into Shamballa is my favorite. It’s written by J.M. DeMatteis and painted by Dan Green. Simply beautiful. -- Shadowcat
This is one of my favorites, too. Beautiful book. -- Clea

For the record, I'm not Beware Of Geek anymore. But my recommendation stands.

(Cautiously optimistic about the new run, as well )

Got to the comic shop today and picked up the new Strange series. WOW!!! Waid’s previous run was fairly hit and miss with me, but I loved this first issue!

Also, picked up several issues from Engleharts run and very much enjoying it.
    AKA FlashFreak
    Favorite Characters:
DC: The Flash (Jay & Wally), Starman- Jack Knight, Stargirl, & Shazam!.
MARVEL: Daredevil, Spider-Man (Peter Parker), & Doctor Strange.

    Current Pulls: Not a thing!

I think I'm likely to prefer this Waid run to the one he just finished. However though it's a good start he's not following the old canon. "Dr Bellamy...didn't like me when I was young..." Is Dr Bellamy also a human immortal like Dr Strange? Strange stopped ageing when he beat Death around 1970 and should be vaguely around ninety now. Other writers have mentioned this in the past, but now it seems to have been forgotten about. Something lacking in the other Waid recent run was a lack of a occultic feel. There's a little more here, but ironically more of it when Strange isn't using magic.

Kev Walker is a great choice, though he slips off model on a few panels where Strange loses his widows peak. While on the subject of his hair, I wish artists would keep Strange's grey streaks higher like horns (which is a little more keeping with a widows peak anyway) rather than sitting low around the ears like Mr Fantastic.

Not keen on the return of the larping costume for Strange. Don't know if that's Waid's or Walker's choice.

Has Strange's age ever been canonically defined? I remember a line in one of Stern's stories where it was rumored he was much older than he appeared. In any case, he's got to older than your average comic hero now. He's had 10-15 years (at least) of magic stuff, years of training under the Ancient One, years developing a reputation as an awesome surgeon, as well as being well into his 20s before even getting into that. I can't see him as being under 50 MINIMUM. As far as magic slowing the aging process, sure, I'll buy that. But with Bellamy knowing him when he was young forces Strange into more of a normal lifespan.

Stern had a younger Dr Strange set in one or two Super hero stories set in the late 1950's. Strange was pre red cloak of levitation, Eye of Agamotto and the Ancient One was still the master with Strange being his agent. Also I vaguely remember a tombstone Of Strange's with the birth date being either the late twenties or early thirties. And something about Dr Strange not being as subject to the sliding timeline, but nothing concrete I remember.

I've heard various dates. For a while, the fansites were claiming he was born in 1900. I've also seen the year 1930 bandied about. However, somewhere along the way (before THE OATH, at least), Stephen was linked to the sliding timeline, just like everyone else.

I would say that point happened when other characters started appearing in his books, or vice versa. Once someone else (say spider-man) appears in his series or him in theirs (or it’s something like marvel team-up), he aged with the sliding timeline same as they are. I can buy Bellamy knowing strange when he was younger, but he ought to be in his 60s by now

Oh, t was much later than that. PTOR, who did the Sanctum Sanctorum Comix blog, has a pretty detailed breakdown of the 1900 year:

    http://sanctumsanctorumcomix.blogspo...doctor_23.html

    And here's a fan who makes a claim for a 1912 date:

    http://originalmarveluniverse.blogsp...-year-one.html

In 2005, however, Marvel was still pushing the 1930 date, so any change would have been sometime in the last 15 years.

I should see if any handbooks came out around the time of his movie.
