Emma will very likely think she can do the job better herself.. it wouldn´t surprise if she is the one that ends up bringing Kate back... (we all know she will at some point)

Emma as a scientist... mmmm.. she is more like the boss of the scientist.. her omega tp etc will allow her to understand enough basics and she is really good at thinking out of the box. She would be super good at tp/cerebro like technology I also think.

She's unfortunately had many "awful" stories and some sub par writers like any other A-list X-man.
