    I agree about the artwork
The caption mentions "moments [that] need to be finessed" and shows both John and Hal.

The more recent Van Jensen origin doesn't include Hal at all, which I like. The earlier Dennis O'Neil/Neal Adams origin for John did include Hal, but is considered out-of-date.

I think John will get a new, modernized take on the Dennis O'Neil/Neal Adams origin, maybe to tie into the HBO Max show. This would be similar to what happened to Barry's origin retcon before the CW show.

Good explanation. The origin story with Van Jensen was really good. You can tell that Van Jensen is a true John Stewart fan. He left out Hal and made it so that John can be a character on his own without relying on someone else. The only common part of the story that Van Jensen had with John's previous origins was that of the guardians specifically choosing him. I think John being chosen specifically by the guardians really made him a special character. It sort of bothers me that writers keep disregarding all of the work Van Jensen done on his run. The only writer that hasn't disregard what Van Jensen did was Robert Venditti and Cullen Bunn (to some extent).

But yea, maybe his origin is being altered, due to the possibility of the HBO Max show.

I think the only way for the next writer build upon from the work the previous writer did for John, is for John to be on some premier title like Green Lantern or what's going on with him currently in the Justice League. And I think that's really unfortunate, because other titles like Green Lantern Corps matters, too.

This is my favorite Green Lantern run.

The series had an ensemble cast, yet all were booked strong, imo.

I prefer John star in a GLC book, but the franchise is in a rut.

honestly, I'm kinda adverse to John being in a Green Lantern Corps title. not that it's an inherently bad idea but we've seen John lead a Green Lantern corps ensemble before. It feels like they've gotten too comfortable with John in the same ensemble cast and it leads to them always wanting to revert to the same beats; plus having him next to characters who all can more or less do the same thing kinda doesn't appeal to me all that much either. They need stories with John where people aren't used to him being seen in so they (if DC does it right) can dig into his character and actually see him developing.
THE SIGNAL (Duke Thomas) is DC's secret shonen protagonist so I made him a fandom wiki

also, check out "The Signal Tape" a Duke Thomas fan project.

    currently following:
    • DC: Red Hood: The Hill
    • Marvel: TBD
    • Manga (Shonen/Seinen): One Piece, My Hero, Dandadan, Jujutsu Kaisen, Kaiju No. 8, Reincarnation of The Veteran Soldier, Oblivion Rouge, ORDEAL, The Breaker: Eternal Force

Two problems plague the GL franchise: 1) the creative teams spent too long regurgitating the dated concepts of Geoff Johns, and 2) followed Geoff Johns tendency of hyping events over character development.

One of the cool things about the run from the 1980's was how different John was from Hal, especially in regards to the Guardians. It was hinted that John would leave Earth, and assist Katma in patrolling her sector while Hal & Guy stayed in 2814. I would love to see a limited series of John & Kat patrolling Sinestro's sector. It would have been interesting to see John's efforts to rehabilitate the image of the GLC in sector 1417.

I still think the best character development John got was during the run from the 1980's by Steve Englehart. Mostly everything else has been tragedy porn. I think the best bet is to one day get another GLC title, but with John being an active agent, not stuck behind a desk.

John has been in the JL book for a while now. Since he does not have a solo title, it should have been easy to give John side arcs to flesh him out. The JL book is all about events, not character development.

I'm glad John appears somewhere, but expanding his character is not a priority, sadly.

At least he's not sitting on a rock in space thinking about Hal's love life.

    spoilers:
so turns out John hasn’t been seen in Death Metal because he was in Jail with other heroes on Apokolips, but he is free now and so he’s now leading the lanterns to destroy the source of Perpetua’s power throughout the multiverse. What might be fun for others is both Kyle and Hal are in the same room when given the mission but he’s the one leading the charge, so there you go.
    end of spoilers

Thanks for the info, sifighter. Would you recommend a John fan to pick up Death Metal and check it out?

I mean he just showed up, I’d wait and see what he does in Multiverses End next month. Because he’s dealing with Perpetua on other worlds in the multiverse, not the Darkest Knight on earth.

For now I’d say keep an eye of Multiverses end and see where John goes from there.
