Wow, there's some really good ideas on who the supporting characters should be for John Stewart!
My personal picks would be Kilowog, Arisia, Sodam, Two Six, Iolande, and Sora as supporting characters.
There's great potential for John to build relationship with these characters. But at the same time the next writer, after the current needs to do the same thing and make it consistent. The character can't advance if it isn't.

I think superheroes generally don't have beards in order to maintain neoteny/youth appeal, but there are lots of counter examples, mostly at Marvel.
