You remember her book far better than I do.

So Starrware was just another big firm with a "diversified portfolio." Ugh. So awful.

I'd make it an aerospace R&D firm. DC's version of Space X or whatever. That way it won't step on the toes of Ferris Air's military contracts. If DC ever thinks to use Ferris again, anyway.

And Karen's she shack (love that term) totally has to be something that is not a space palace in the ice or a cave. Super important Karen's hideout be its own thing.

Maybe set her up in St. Louis?

With the exception of Gotham and (to a lesser extent) Metropolis, none of DC's fictional American cities have anything that stands out about them. New York may be a common setting in fiction but at least Connor and Palmiotti put some actual effort into it.

Has to be under the Arch. Now reason except, come on! Yes, there's nothing under the arch except a high water table, but hell, I've enjoyed stuff about the tunnels under New Orleans, so whatever.

I confess to having the trades of her solo.

That's just it, I don't they did put much effort into it. They know well and just gave a loving travelogue. Effort IMO would be taking an entirely fictional city, and making it into a virtual character of it's own. With PG's New York, I didn't get that vibe. Could have just as well been set in Hong Kong, actually, that would have been better as it's fresher to Western audiences. Maybe they would have done it, but they bailed early. And the other guy didn't seem to care to do anything about New York except set much of his run outside of it.

I'd argue that Star City, St. Roche, Keystone and Central Cities, and Shazam's hangout are all pretty much characters of their own. They all have distinctive feels to them, distinctive kinds of stories that work very well in them. They get shaped by their signature hero, but in turn also shape them. Kara had no effect on New York in her series that any other hero who had done the same things would have, (gratitude being the chief effect), and the city itself had zero effect on her. And it being a real city, and one that is basically a crossroads of the world, can't really have a specific vibe at least in modern times, like say Gotham City does. There are some American cities that do have such character. St. Roche is obviously New Orleans and a few other similar cities, but mainly the Big Easy. Vegas has that well, Vegas vibe. Glamour, glitz, gambling, poverty, riches, gangsters, atomic testing, water rights....basically a sunnier Gotham City with different driving forces.

While it may be a bit harder, I will say that using New York as a character in and of itself IS possible, I've seen it done. Just not in this case. And I see no compelling reason to try and fit PG there. However, for studies in how to do it right with New York, apart from anything else, there's always The Shadow's New York. Yes, going period probably helped, but doing it right just takes a little effort, even in modern times, as it's been done well across media too many times to even cite. Ditto cities like LA, San Francisco, and Chicago. But that usually happens over the long haul, when the creators carefully match the characters to the time and place. For me there's nothing about PG that particularly screams "New York" as opposed to any other city in the way Metropolis screams Superman, and that'a not JUST because of their long history. It's the design and feel of the city fitting the character, and that's obviously easier to do when you create the character AND the city.

Actually, a secret base under the arch with a cool "light shining through the water" effect coming from the ceiling could be a pretty great visual. And it's a subtle nod towards Karen's days as an Atlantean.

    Sadly, that's unlikely to help.

    Honestly? A lot like NYC.

You need a city that has a lot of culture, from a lot of varied places, to help reflect Karen's multiversal history. It's gotta be a tough city that doesn't take sh*t from anyone, but also one that has a lot of heart in it. It has to be on the cutting edge of technological development as well as being a corporate hot spot where major, multi-billion dollar business deals are cut.

So taking all of that and applying superhero sensibilities to it....I guess you want a major city that's the hub of travel between earths, probably with a noticeable influx of aliens and alien technology as well as major R&D firms like STAR and Karen's own Starrware....probably something a little Silicon Valley-esque that also has that "center of the world" vibe of NYC.

I'd probably design the city with a little retro-futuristic, art deco flair akin to the 90's Superman cartoon. Something that can be a visual callback to earth-2.

Er....no. She didn't. And while some of her art is sort of pushing the boundary like many comic book heroines, much of it is perfectly innocuous, the vast majority of it in fact. It's really only a few covers.

She was created in the 70s during the new wave of feminism of the 60s into the 70s that embraced sexuality as a form of empowerment and teardrop cutouts were in vogue. She was reflective of that movement in both visual and personality.

I'm not going to pretend there wasn't also the factor that she was visually appealing to men as well, but she was created to be a reflection of what was actually happening in the world.

Think of the half shaved head thing that Crush is rocking right now, or some of the new heroes Marvel is creating to reflect current trends.

Unfortunately the feminism got away from PG for a long time but she's come back around to a woman who loves how she looks and if you object that's your problem. Moreover she's happy to be single if there's no guy around that she thinks is worth the effort. Karen is just very comfortable being herself. She's kind of great that way.

She was also created to be a contrast to the more sacrine And sweet Supergirl of the time.
