Personally, I can buy them having Conner go "I am having a **** day and need a minute."

    From Tom King:

"Design for the return of Superboy by Kenneth Roquefort. This was part of a new52 Superboy series I was supposed to write a bunch of years ago that fell apart for many reasons. Design is still cool though. Never posted it before I don’t think."

This must've been around the same time Grayson launched then. I think the Dick Grayson spy series was his first DC work?

This was early 2015, so I think Grayson was atleast a year into it.

This actually makes sense, Kon-El was going through a traumatic/depressive story arc. No wonder, Teen Titans was trying to set up a King solo SB book.

Superboy also appeared with a similar look on a cover of Teen Titans back in 2015.

Honestly as mixed as I've been on Tom King as of late if he still wants to do something with Superboy and has an actual vision and direction for his character I'm game to see it at this point.

As excited as I was for Conner's return in YJ it's felt like a waste of a comeback, the first issue sets-up his re-emergence as the main driving arc of the series to be explored and explained going forward only to do almost neither of those things for month's on end, a potentially interesting development with having gained a family since his absence proves to be nothing but a red herring that's quickly forgotten, his overall presence in the book is lacking with him going many issues not doing or saying anything of note and even the emotional aspect of him being reunited with friends again is underdeveloped, you definitely wouldn't know him and Cassie were previously a couple or him and Tim are best friends going by this book alone given how rarely this old tight-knit group have been shown having an actual conversations with each other.

And to top it off a year in and he's in the exact same position he was at the start of the book (trapped in another dimension with his friends needing to rescue him) and having undergone no real development or growth since then there's not even a contrast in seeing how far he's come or changed since beforehand to be explored in such a blatantly repetitive scenario, to me it's all just further proof that this book is purposely dragging it's feet.

So if Tom King has a depressing 12 issue mini in with Conner and Cassie obnoxiously call each other "WondyG and "SuperBabe" respectively the entire time I'll take it.

It was supposed to be Superboy and Miss Martian calling each other SuperBabe and Missy or something: https://www.instagram.com/p/B8bj6H0BX20/ 🙃

Are we sure these weren't just for Teen Titans? Nixed due to Rebirth perhaps, since New 52 Conner ended up erased?

Nope. These were for the scrapped Superboy series. Read Tom King's captions in his posts, he made it clear there.

Miss M huh? I'm not crazy about the Hijab, it was the same problem I had with Halo, either create a character of the apporiate faith or don't bother because you're not really adding diversity by having a non-human character essentially culturally apporiate a religion they're neither a part of nor believe in.

So it would've likely been inspired by the YJ animated Superboy which I guess is what they were going for with the New 52 version. I can see why that darker take appealed to King though I do wonder what his plan would be now that 90's Kon is back, maybe lean into his celebrity hero phase of his early career and play him up as washed-up former child star, maybe reexamine the rather inappropriate nature of his relationship with Tana and Knockout, I mean under a modern lense and if you were to reverse the genders it would appear as adults sexualy exploiting a minor.

Honestly there are so many radically different takes on Superboy at this point I wonder why no ones thought to do an Orphan Black storyline where Conner meets his brothers, you could have a Superboy inspired by the different versions a angsty angry one (YJ animated), a cold, stotic one (New 52), an innocent childlike one (Titans), an evil one (Match), one who's a comical throw back to his original 90's persona, dated slang and everything... Ect.

I'm thinking more along the lines of an actual story arc that actually explores the concept of genetics vs identity not some hodgepodge of dispoable copies, again something like Orphan Black that shows that despite sharing the same face that each clone is still there own person and indivual.

I agree here. Given the timing, it looks like they may have been trying to copy Ms. Marvel. But this isn't how to do it, because as you said, Megan would've just been pretending to be a Muslim.

So I guess it’s not an automatic recognition/remembering when Superman first sees Conner in their reintroduction, guess that might be a bit awkward for Conner when he calls himself Superboy or gets called Superboy in front of him this issue.
