I suppose if anything hurt his chances, it would be that his mini didn't sell super well.. though mini's usually don't, so it's probably a non issue.
So what, if anything, would RAISE his chances?

His entire connection to Marvel is "He interviewed Coates twice and wrote a mini that didn't sell." Hardly a fantastic CV.

I can think of good candidates (at least one of which has posted on this board) and some really bad choices. It all depends on whether Marvel wants a fresh start, or more of the same.

Finally!! Maybe now BP can get some props in his own damn book.

Well, I almost hate to say it but the simple fact that he's black probably helps a little.

But there are certainly plenty of other black candidates who are at least a qualified to write the book, if not more.

I do think being the writer of Rise put him in a somewhat unique position as he essentially streamlined the entire BP mythos... so he potentially planted a lot of seeds he can follow through with if he were to take over the book. Potentially.

I really enjoyed the past year of coates run especially and hope he keeps writing because the growth is obvious. I hope the next writer is more action oriented though bc I think it's time we just see t'challa suplexing people for a lil bit. The soap opera/GoT style of every character counts makes books more immersive but when it's month to month it's a bit exhausting too. I think when people go back and read the run whole, it'll be looked on more fondly than the forum indicates lol.

I don't have the hardcore hate for Coates that many posters here do but, man, I'm fu*king stoked he's finally leaving the book.

If he can get off Cap while he's at it, that'd be cool.

Can you list what he has done for PANTHER (not anyone else)?

You can appreciate what his works has helped do (increase awareness of Panther books as reviews from folks who ignore Marvel & Dc actually talked about them). So trades of all Panther books did get a boost before the movie arrived and in some cases afterwards.

And yes it can be erased and forgotten. Rom, Micronaughts & Transformers were all in the Marvel Universe once.

Coates work will be far more appreciated in time.
As the book that could not build up on a ground breaking Oscar winning movie?

A movie that found a way to RESPECT black women & black men?
A movie that found a way to show how powerful an African nation was?
While the book did NONE of that.

While it tossed out spinoffs-that were DOA because they all forget one thing-if you call it Black Panther and the blank-HE better appear in it in EVERY issue.

Now that Bob Iger has stepped down at Disney it's time for new CEO Bob Chepak to start the interview process for replacement Black Panther writers...

    "Tighter"

The New Black Panther Grocery List-

    1. Cosplay- Must be able to fit into customized Black Panther feet pajamas without shame or guilt of being mocked by hating @$$ peers from the sidelines

    2. Geography- Needs to be able to locate (longitude/latitude) Wakanda on a map and recognize that Africa is a continent and not a whole country

    3. CBR or Bust- Mandatory check in at CBR to mingle with the common folk here in the BP Appreciation thread regardless of hi/lo sales or negative critiques

    4. Bass in The Voice- Speak it into existence like you have a pair and then act on it on panel not off panel

    5. Get Woke Go Broke- Lose the agenda based rhetoric and give the paying consumer what he/she wants and go pick up a hard earned check end of

FINALLY Coates, the worst writer of Black Panther that I have read, is leaving Black Panther!
I thought Maberry's "doomwar" was bad but 5 years of Coates takes the cake.

Truthfully, I feel he did what Marvel editorial wanted him to do to Black Panther and Wakanda thematically if not economically.
He humbled, derided and degraded the very IDEA of a Righteous Super Genius King from an African Utopia but, surprisingly to them, his portrayal didn't increase the popularity of the character at all.

Maybe the bean counters or some other faction will force Marvel Editorial to write a badass Righteous Super Genius King from an African Utopia like people want and expect.

If you keep posting the Namor/T'Challa laugh enough it might just hit one day.
