And yeah, I get the argument that more people know him for his real name than as Spider-Man but if we're keeping it real it's kind of the same for majority of his contemporary characters.

That and I think, for better or worse, the only people who actually care are the minority of the militant "Peter should be the only Spider" crowd.
I'm just kind of annoyed every time someone yells out "Miles" when they're in the field or treat him like a second-rate Spider-Man because he's not Peter and isn't the main character.

The Insomniac games are making the right decision of quickly breaking him off from Peter and going on his own like they seem to be doing.

Yeah, they do need something instead of just having no codename. Using his civilian name in costume could potentially out his secret identity. Maybe he should be referred to as S2. Peter being S1. The S, of course, stands for Spider-Man and that name would still be used if only one of the two is present.

Like the original Kamen Rider series. Takeshi Hongo was the first Kamen Rider, then had to be replaced with a near-identical grasshopper-themed, motorcycle-riding cyborg superhero who finished off villains with a flying kick also named Kamen Rider, real name Hayato Ichimonji, because Hongo's actor got injured pretty badly early on. Then Hongo's actor healed up and came back after about 40 episodes, though instead of giving Ichimonji the boot, the show had him and Hongo become the Double Riders, henceforth distinguished as Kamen Rider #1 (Ichigo) and Kamen Rider #2 (Nigo).

At least there they have different names for people to refer to them though, so when you say Ichigo or Nigo fans will know who you're taking about, but you can't really do that with Spider-Man.

It's funny because for decades, Marvel policy was that two concurrent characters could not have the same codename - which is why characters such as Jessica Drew / Julia Carpenter Spider-Woman, Adam Warlock / NM Warlock, Richard Rider / Frankie Raye Nova, Marvell / Monica Rambeau Captain Marvel - JUST missed each other in terms of publishing dates. It's as if Marvel trained us that two simultaneous Spider-Man (s) can't exist.

Marvel arguably still treats Peter as the Spider-Man and everyone else as a Spider-Man. That is why we have a hard time wrapping our heads around there being more than one Spider-Man, but not around there being more than one Flash or Green Lantern.

Ultimately it's moot. Miles Morales is Spider-Man where it counts. Among merchandising, and among non-civilian young kids. That's the real audience.

Miles Morales, and his great success and positive reception, trained Marvel to make room for two Spider-Man. And there are now two Spider-Man.

It is not "moot" if Marvel treats Miles as 'the other Spider-Man' (either implicitly or explicitly) while making a killing in Miles merchandise. That is textbook tokenism. If the goal behind Miles is representation/equality, this is a topic that has to be discussed and addressed.

Those names literally mean Number One and Number Two.

There was actually a Champions issue where Miles was referred to as Second Spider by the mother of a girl he couldn't save (who was accidentally sacrificed to Mephisto for Kamala and Viv). So there's precedent for Miles being called 2. And, it's only an issue when they're together, and wouldn't affect merchandise. It would just be a way to solve the problem of what to call each other when in battle when civilians are around - in particular in the cartoons.

Yeah, true. Jessica was dead when Julia debuted and depowered when she returned. When Jessica (actually Veranke the Skrull) eventually took back the Spider-Woman name after the death of Mattie Franklin, Julia renamed herself Arachne. Rich was called Kid Nova in New Warriors at first, due to Frankie debuting since his original run (Frankie never was renamed, so this is an early example of a shared mantle). Monica only debuted after Mar-Vell died too.

Yeah, but in practice they can serve as actual names instead of just literally being number 1 and 2.

Now that I think about it, it may just be a Western games thing to do that. They don't seem to like you controlling too many characters at one time. Batman: Arkham was like that too.
