In much better news, the piece I commissioned from Fosslis is complete!

I never got to comment on that. It is quite a quality piece of art. I will say The Gifted made me see the potential for Lorna and Emma interacting regardless of if they are having shall we say 'fun' in the process or not. Comic Lorna is simply too old for Esme in the comics, not so much on the TV show where I was happy to support them.

Comic Lorna is really of a different generation then many newer characters. She was part of the extended first class of Xavier and Magneto's followers. Its something important to keep in mind when considering who are Lorna's contemporaries.

I mean, who knows, maybe Marvel could have the X-Men reopen the institute and force Lorna to take classes with Nature Girl and Eye Boy! Maybe even sleep with Eye Boy as thanks for helping her pass Cyclops' class on how magnets work.

Sometimes a reminder is warranted about the breath of Lorna's history.

Bunn made a pretty good argument for nerfing Magneto's powers from time to time to show how intelligent and skilled he is at coming up with alternate solutions to lower power moments for him. Lorna has been around for a number of those eras when Mags through injury or something else is at low power. Lorna goes through massive swings of power level as well though they usually don't explain why. That is ok to an degree though an explanation certainly helps, I will say if you are really tuning down Lorna's power big time one should most certainly increase her skill and forward planning with equal measure.

But, yes Lorna is a contemporary of the first generation of X-Men. I have no trouble with her hanging out with younger X-Men like Eye Boy, but its important to remember she is a wholly different generation.

It's also worth remembering that Lorna has a Masters in geophysics which means she's likely aware of applications for her powers that Magneto wouldn't be aware of.

Plus, the potential dichotomy between Lorna and Magneto could be that while Magneto has a lot of experience, Lorna may be able to better innovate/improvise as someone younger that doesn't immediately go to familiar solutions. I think the last episode of Picard gives a good example of how this could work between the two.

    spoilers:
Picard and Jurati were in space to face the Tal Shiar. The idea of the Picard maneuver came up, but Picard said it wasn't a feasible move because it could only make one fake duplicate of a ship. Jurati recognized how a piece of tech could be used to make many more duplicates, and also knew how to use that to make each duplicate appear to have a different warp signature. Combined, they had a great plan that worked: Picard's experience with Jurati's innovation.

Also, earlier in the episode, Jurati tricked the synths into thinking she was going along with their plans so she could break Picard out of confinement.
    end of spoilers

Point being, there's plenty of room for each character to contribute something meaningful to the expression and usage of their powers. And those approaches can be based on their points of view. Marvel seems to have a general attitude of "there can be only one master at all times," but life is more complex than that. People have specialties, and even two specialists can have different areas they're better at than the other.

That's a nice cover! Polaris looks the best there IMO.

    I like both those covers

And yes Salarta I agree, Polaris and Magneto should apply "the same mutation" differently, which would demonstrate their innate differences as people (well, mutants). Both gender, age, backgrounds, personality and so on
Forget the old ways - Krakoa is god.

I would say they already do, but over the past 15 years rarely in any positive ways that make Lorna stand out or make people want to read her. She tosses around metal and does the occasional energy blast and very rarely puts up a shield as in once in a blue moon.

One thing The Gifted for at least half its existence did right was she loved knives. It was a calling card for the character and it made her stand out having a go to weapon even though she used others.

The problem with your comments is most writers I have found end up when taking about this top to simply making her a weaker version of him stuck on metal bending and then getting her wrong in terms of her willingness to fight without restraint. This is why AH I don't talk about the issue without very clear specificity.

Lorna for instance should know more about modern computers then Magneto. But, some get caught up that he should be a super genius and should always be ahead of Lorna in all fields. Would a 90 year old really be ahead in modern computing above someone in their 30s? In the real world who knows less about current computers then your parents/grandparents?

These are the kind of things to focus on. But, I have always been leery of this discussion as Marvel in the past has proven lazy and attempts to differentiating them just entails powering Lorna down and putting kid gloves on her or something truly awful like turning Lorna into a giant who feeds on people's life force and makes then crazy.

Well, Magneto built an "orbital base of operations", Asteroid M from scratch…
And I don't think he had that much of an education.
So, yes, he is some kind of super-genius. (Authors in comics are like good fairies: they tend to give many qualities to their characters when it's useful to the story.)

It doesn't mean Lorna should be stupid: she is supposed to have 'expertise in geophysics'…

I know what Magneto did. But, he was also never shown to be making the computers to fill out the base. Perhaps he was with his mind making hundreds of computers from other parts. It would be arguably within his power, but it was not shown, so he might have been having some mutants do it for him.

The only times Lorna has been shown of altering electronics was not the comics, but TV shows like Wolverine and the X-Men at time 13:50.

I am a major Magneto not just a Lorna fan. I have read every issue he is in.

But, writers have real problems with Lorna figuring out what the hell for her to do. What they often settle on is out of character for her, not very thoughtful and frankly uninteresting. The character is over five decades old and all, but a small handful of writers have pretty much failed writing her which says a lot.

I have found writers most often think up new cool ways for Lorna to use her powers in more interesting ways when she is in conflict with x-teams or the Avengers or a semi ally. Magneto has the same condition as they put more thought into how he can use his powers when he isn't just one member among dozens and is in anti-hero or noble antagonist mode.

How to play Lorna's interaction with certain characters on Krakoa is an interesting one. Poccy of course would be high on the list of characters they might bump into as is Sinister. With Poccy at least its complicated as he clearly gave her the choice to be a Horseman in exchange for her powers. It could be interesting if that is taken into account.

Emma? Now that would be an interesting one. Leah would certainly love doing that. She may have felt uneasy about writing Lorna as she said, but she loves Emma.

Who do you want to see Lorna interact with on Krakoa that isn't part of the usual suspects?

Great question. I've always wanted Lorna and Betsy to work together more. Perhaps an investigation in London is needed and that's how they can cross paths. In my mind they would look so iconic back-to-back.

They're both very no-nonsense types. Hit you on the mouth if you step out of line.

This is so, so good. Love the reference to the Jim Lee's Polaris card.

The trade info is up for X-Men Empyre on Amazon. They are listing it as five issues, while Marvel is listing it as four oversized issues.

Also the first X-Factor by Leah trade info is up. It looks like they are using X-Factor #4 as an issue for the Summer crossover trade not this one.

Also one of Hickman's more interesting creations by omegabad.
