Default DC Africana Appreciation: Vol. 3

    [name all the characters :-p]

fingers cross the mods don't shut this down for premature posting!

it's the return of the Africana Appreciation thread! This is the 2021 edition of the DC Africana Appreciation Thread; Volume Three BAY-BEEEE!! In 2020 we saw Mr. Terrific and Black Lightning coming off pretty solid runs (one more than the other), young black characters like Jackson Hyde and Duke Thomas getting some shine in solo stories, an African New God, and John Ridley's fantastic work kicking off The Other History of the DC Universe; i'm sure i'm probably missing some other great things. In 2021, we are in for some really amazing things from our black heroes of color coming down the pipeline and so much to appreciate. We have Milestone slated to be revived this year, we have a major Vixen story kicking off the Truth & Justice title, we have Future State giving us a Black Batman, a Black Aquaman, the return of the black Mr. Miracle (Shiloh Noman), and John Stewart in the leading role in and post-Future State for the Green Lantern franchise. Also, we have Naomi getting her own live-action TV series from Ava Duverany, we have Ryan Wilder as the new black Batwoman in the second season of Batwoman, a possible Painkiller spin-off, and a Black Adam movie starring the Rock and featuring the first and only Black Hawkman. So, once again, this is a thread dedicated to DC's black characters, from Africans, to those across the African Diaspora, and including black identifying Aborigines; however utilized, or underutilized, the character may be and regardless of alignment. I will try to keep this up to date so feel free to post anyone I missed and I will add them to the list.

    Exemplifying Black Excellence!
    The Hall of Fame

In 2019 John Stewart swept the competition as the top black DC hero. 2020, in an unusual turn of events, we actually had a three-way tie in last year's poll; with Static coming from behind to tie with Black Lightning and Mr. Terrific, who had been battling for the #1 spot most of last year. In lieu of taking all three off the board, and in honor of the return of the Milestone Universe, I decided to return Black Lightning and Mr. Terrific to the pool and induct SUPERHEROOOO STATIC SHOCK (woop-woooo), Static into the Hall of Fame!

to get the ball rolling I'll toss up my top 10:

    1. Duke Thomas (he's my favorite character, period.)
    2. Jog/Samuel Song (I'm a simple man. he's west african and a god, I'm west african with a god complex, that's enough for me. )
    3. Naomi McDuffie (fantastic start, love her name, I'm expecting great things.)
    4. John Stewart (he's John MF Stewart, what more could I say?)
    5. Kaldur'ahm/Jacksom Hyde (nothing but love and support for my Aquaman!)
    6. Mr. Terrific (I loved the Terrifics and I love the idea of a black hero that contends with the biggest brains of the DC Multiverse)
    7. Black Lightning (Black Lightning (CW), Young Justice: Outsiders, Outsiders #28 from 2009 I think and surprisingly Bryan Hill's Outsiders sold me on Jefferson after years of indifference.)
    8. Vixen (I love Vixen in concept but there just isn't enough on her for me to justify saying she's anywhere near my Top 5. I am always hoping for the best from her because she's ripe with potential)
    9. Wallace West (I've been pulling for this kid because of all the hate he got and I'm glad to see him developing)
    10. Black Manta (I love how insanely cold and ruthless this man is. his rage is his weakness and his superpower.)

honorable mention: Bronze Tiger is my 11th man, one of the greatest fighters in the world and I'm waiting for him to get his due. also, shoutout the the Milestone universe. I don't count them as DC heroes personally.

I like this list. as much as i love John it's always nice to see a list that mixes it up a bit. I don't see too many Pantha and Jet fans.

oh, also y'all feel free to throw in some of your favorite art (covers, panels, etc.) featuring DC's black characters too. I'm working on the new banner soon, would be nice to have a pool of everyone's favorite images; the more visually striking and/or iconic the better. trynna make the thread a little more collaborative this time around

In some ways, the 4th World is THE most interesting franchise in all media because it's both unique and uniquely situated.

Unique: I know that it's a hard franchise to sell because it's a hard franchise to "get." The reason for that is that it's a deep mythology with some major elements that have remained deliberately undefined for decades. For example, the Source is loosely defined and the anti-life equation is almost completely undefined. We know that it's a McGuffin Darkseid is interested in, but how exactly do you end life with it? Do you plug it into a motherbox like a program? Is it like magic runes that when you draw the symbols, everything dies? Is it a code to the Source? No one really knows.

Uniquely Situated: One of the only reasons the DC Universe can remain cohesive is the 4th World. You can take any of DC's characters and somehow use the 4th world to tell stories with them. Maybe Krypton and New Genesis worked together... Maybe the Amazons and Green Lanterns went to war with Apokolips... Maybe Wayne Enterprises or LexCorps has replicated some 4th World Tech. It's really a filler franchise, particularly because there's not really a "lead character" for 4th World stories.

If DC puts out more 4th World content, it should be in the form of anthologies, with characters actually being killed off in this massive sci fi conflict like ASOIAF's War of the Five Kings. Major plotlines:

-Orion going to war with his father Darkseid while battling his own dark urges.
-High Father turning out not to be pure of heart or intention.
-The dysfunction the various children of Darkseid suffer from
-Ambush Bug just trying to survive in a world where the big players give no ****s about people like him

With regard to Shiloh-- I just like the idea of "Mr. Miracle" being a rebel symbol that's so important that even if Scott Free dies, "Mr. Miracle" escapes to live and fight another day. Done right, the mentorship, the death, and the mantle passing could strike all the right emotional chords. Scott Free has this terrible life, but he has a compelling belief system that Shiloh can carry on well.

With regard to Vykin-- From the very beginning, Vykin has been the one on his team responsible for the mother box. That should tell you something about his character. I see him like the "Galahad" of the group on this grail quest for the anti-life equation, trying to get it before Darkseid does. I like how the Young Justice cartoon made him the group leader rather than Mark Moonrider. Like Galahad, I could see him being the only one really worthy of accessing the equation. I'd like to see him, Bear (Perceival), and Seraphin (Bors) be a unit of brigands who previously fought together and are on the run, almost like an A-Team situation, or, if you play Kingdom Hearts--Sora, Donald, and Goofy. Their powers mix well, with a magnetism manipulator, a tank, and a blaster. Moonrider and Dreamer would join up with them as these lancers to the other subteam. Maybe make them smugglers or just somehow otherwise caught up in this quest. I could see Vykin and Moonrider butting heads, not unlike Captain America and Iron Man.

With regard to Jog-- I'm not too familiar with him, but I like him as an extension of Black Racer's story. The Black Racer was a soldier who later became an embodiment of death. He's always been at someone else's service, either as a soldier or as an assassin. All his life, he's had to constantly follow a certain set of rules. But he breaks those rules for his son, the only family he has left. I think that's actually really compelling, especially if there are real consequences to that.

DC doesn't really know how to handle or adapt this franchise, but the potential here is evergreen. It's the greatest gift Jack Kirby ever gave DC Comics.

I have so many story ideas that I want to pitch for a Global Guardians mini/ongoing, you have no idea how much I love them.
