    Oh dear.
Seeing how decrepit he looked at the end of ROTS, I now have a horrid picture in my mind of Rey's dad's conception.....uggh!

Palpatine did have heirs in the very weird old EU "Jedi Prince" series of novels (Which even the old EU continuity guys had a hard time trying to mesh with everything else. They had really nice covers though!). The Barbara Hambley novels also inferred that one of the villains was Palpatine's son, but that turned out to be a red herring (The fake son also got turned into a weird cyborg in The New Jedi Order novels)

Yep, two. Children of the Jedi and Planet of Twilight. However, they generally were not well received by fandoms at the time.

COTJ had Luke onboard an old Palpatine superweapon which, among other things, had a Jedi ghost on it and a machine that programs people into Stormtroopers. At the end the Jedi ghost gets a new body and becomes Luke's love interest for a bit. There's also another storyline which involves the alledged heir and his mother.

POT involved a Hutt Jedi(!) a religious cult and plagues.

I know Hambly is a well-reknowned sci-fi writer, but I don't think her style was particularly suited well to Star Wars.

Yeah, a few essay-style articles tried to cobble them into continuity and made it so convoluted that most of the series did not happen the way it was explained onscreen (basically, the Big Bads were imposters for the real ones and Palpatine's son was not really his son). Franky, I think the whole of it should've been just declared non-canon and be done with it rather then adding to the mess Legends continuity became in its last years of existence.

Yeah, sad thing was the "son" was more interesting a a lobotomized cyborg then he originally was.

Yeah, they weren't that good, IMHO. Course, she did create Waru, the debate-ending example of how nothing can ruin Star Wars forever.

Would have preferred her being either Leia and Hans child. Luke's daughter with a wife ( as Mark has been asking for that for years got it in the EU and then had it stripped from cannon, and no it's not fair that Harrison got a death and Mark and Carrie never got what they wanted) or use his hand with other DNA and pull a Boba Fett and have Rey be a clone of Luke made to be different enough to be his child.

We had a Nobody in Ezra, in Kaden, in Obi-wan, hell even in Anakin. Pre EU destruction we even had a whole new council of Jedi and a new Academy. That was all stripped. So why could Rey not be a Skywalker. It was their story. Are we going to say that Legacy characters are bad now? Should we dispose of Jon, Damian, Mayday Parker, Tony's daughter Morgan, Franklin and Valerie Richards, Cable and Summer, etc. Because they're all related to a legacy. Why can certain characters be allowed to have kids and others it's like a bad thing? I don't get this mentality. I really don't.

You can still have unrelated jedi, so why is Rey havi g a direct connection such s bad thing? Or would this be less of an issue if she was Male?

Well, frankly I'm honestly baffled now post TROS they didn't do that. I'm an unashamed Reylo shipper, I thought she'd marry the redeemed Ben and the line would continue through them.....but now I wonder what the point was in repeatedly insisting she wasn't a Skywalker, as Hidalgo and Abrams did regularly, when in the end she took the name anyway.

Way I look it at, having her not be a biological Skywalker shows how how legacy can be more then just family trees, not any kind of criticism of biological family legacies.

I can think of a couple possibilities; either the idea that she would take the name was floating around and they lied to surprise the fans, they meant in the sense that she wasn't planned to be Luke or Leia's daughter, or at the time, there were no plans for her to take the name and that changed after the interviews were done.

Watching the original trilogy, I always figured that Skywalker was like a moniker that Anakin had earned due to his heroism in the Clone Wars. The origin they gave him in the prequels is a bit baffling, because it would make sense that a slave would adopt a more dignified name after being freed, but it makes no sense for that to have been his birth name, unless they were given those names by Watto as a kind of sick joke. I'm pretty sure they had considered making Rey part of that family tree somehow, but realized that would make the romance with Kylo Ren a bit too incestuous. The Palpatine thing obviously came out of left field, but they didn't really have much other choice if they wanted their Jedi Princess to have a royal lineage, and of course Disney wasn't going to not do that.

I never got that impression. With all the weird names from Star Wars from the get-go, there was never anything in my mind to make me think Skywalker was anything but a legit family name, as opposed to a title. Everyone reads into things differently, I guess. In regards to the prequels, that they were slaves never made me bat an eye either. The movies themselves never outright state if she was born into slavery or not, leaving it open to assumption that she wasn't. Indeed outside materials then eventually confirm that is the case. But again just using movies as a source, it leaves the door open to come to that conclusion on one's own and that Skywalker is not a slave name, hence why its something neither she nor Anakin drop the first chance they get.

Yeah, maybe there are other Skywalker lines that diverged before Shmi or something like that.

In fact it's even possible Luke, Leia and others have cousins still around from Padme's side of the family, as an AOTC deleted scene and ROTS's funeral scene showed.

My guess is to make a mystery when the title came out. Though that was probably decided after people who both both love and hate episode 8 took Kylo’s iconoclastic kill the past mantra as the message of the movie.

It makes no sense that a culture disconnected from us would have surnames that are way different from our's?

Eh, probably not; TFA had the first major clue that Rey wasn't related to the Skywalker family.

Actually, that wasn't the case at all:

"Some people feel like we shouldn’t revisit the idea of Palatine, and I completely understand that. But if you’re looking at the nine films as one story, I don’t know many books where the last few chapters have nothing to do with those that have come before. If you look at the first eight films, all the set-ups of what we’re in IX are there in plain view." - J.J. Abrams
"I think one of the themes of the movie is that anyone can be anything regardless of where you’re from, and I don’t know if it resonates for everyone but I think there are quite a few people who appreciate that idea of not coming from a place that you’re not particularly excited about following or proud of. And though I completely understand ‘you’re nobody’ is a devastating thing, to me the more painful, the more shocking thing was the idea that you’re from the worst possible place. And is that thing that you feel that you know is part of you somehow, that you’re haunted by, is that your destiny? And the idea that there are things more powerful than blood, as Luke says, that thing was a really important thing to convey for us." - J.J. Abrams
Agree or disagree with the decisions, they were made for the sake of the story being told, from the horse's mouth. Jedi princess fan theory: debunked.
