What is it with Marvel and giant serpents? Monica fought one, albeit only in a dream in her limited series. Blue Marvel fought one as well.

Maybe Monica's dream was a precognition of her time during the Ultimates when she was a being of pure electromagnetic energy?

Man kind fighting serpents has been a part of human mythology in dozens of cultures, so it's not shocking that it would bleed into comics.

And Marina sort of looked like a serpent when Monica battled her as the leviathan at the end of her run as Avengers chairperson. Didn't go to well for Monica then either.

Monica's dream was a nightmare representation of her near-death experience battling Leviathan (Marrina in her mutated form). Since that one-shot was where Monica got her powers back after that incident, it was McDuffie's way of recapping that event for the readers without a standard exposition/flashback scene.

While this is not what exactly happened in Avengers it's never explained why her power malfunctioned like that.

monica turned herself into electricity to stun the leviathan, then her electricity just flowed into the water, which turned to steam, and dissipated her body completely

she then sort of put herself together with way less energy, so her physical mass was emaciated

this was the explanation given in #294

she was portrayed as having a phobia of water in ksd's captain marvel when using her powers as a result

Which makes no sense as she fought underwater before and I think she even used electricity attack while there.

I know the real reason was because the new writer didn't want to use her but such a lame way to get rid of her.

Wasn't it also Monica who went underwater to discover Jean Grey's body?

It really is funny what writers will do to avoid using characters.

My understanding of the events that happened during the 1st disassembled Avengers #291-294, was that she generated too much energy/lightning to fight off Marrina. Capt. Marvel 2 IS energy and chose lightning, which doesn't usually penetrate the ocean. Monica did. My interpretation is that in trying to electrocute Marrina, she went all in inside the ocean and affected her electricity form.
