    Fantastic Four #336 Jan 1990
    "Dark Congress!"
Congressman James Pertierra has just accused Reed Richards of creating the device
that has caused a number of super-villains to attack the Fantastic Four during
the Senate committee to determine if the Super-Powers Registration Act
should be put into law in order to win the government to their side.
Televised on live television, the press begins a quick poll with the average American to get their opinions.
With Pertierra joining the committee, Reed is asked to answer the allegations that have been made.
Reed explains that if he had designed the device that has caused so much chaos, he would have made it completely undetectable.

Reed is given a chance to speak again and he tells the hearing that the super-hero community works for the greater good.
He also points out the danger of government regulation, referring them to moments earlier when Flying Tiger attacked the hearing.
He stated that while the congressmen were mad that Reed didn't do anything,

he pointed out how Ms. Marvel was the best suited to deal with that foe and did so accordingly.
To punctuate his point about heroes having the best skills to deal with the job than the government,
he points to how Apocalypse also flew over the Capital Building and that had he actually planned to attack,
the Fantastic Four could have formulated a plan to deal with him based on their years of experience working together.

Suddenly the hearing is interrupted when one of the guards informs the Senators that
a number of individuals in trench coats and dark glasses were seen heading towards the Capital.
Recalling how all the villains who attacked previously wore similar attire,
everyone suddenly wonders if the device Reed found has been properly deactivated or not.

Ben, Johnny and Sharon decide to deal with the matter and tell Reed and Sue to stay and continue their testimony.
Sue suddenly whispers to her husband her suspicions that the device might not just be influencing super-villains but the Senators as well.
This gets Reed thinking, and while the others deal with the villains outside, Sue address the committee with her thoughts.
She once again likens super-powers with the Constitutional right to bare arms
and that super-powers, like weapons, are a means of protecting people.
That those who would use their powers to break the law must not have advantage over those who do not.
Reed also points out how government interference impeded the work of super-heroes:
How the military has never been able to capture the Hulk, or how Henry Gyrich's
time as a government liaison to the Avengers only impeded the groups ability to function.

As Reed's argument comes to a close, the device suddenly comes to life and bombards everyone in the room.
Suddenly the spectators and the Senators become violent and try to attack Reed and Sue.
As they try to contain the mob, Reed grabs the device and resists it's electronic shocks in order to shut it down and restore order.
As the people return to normal with no memory of their attack, Ben and the others
re-enter the court room to inform Reed that the villains have all been dealt with.
Reed then ushers the Senators outside to see the effectiveness of unrestrained super-heroes
where the police are taking away the Armadillo, Stilt-Man, the Orca, the Owl, Whirlwind and the Man-Ape.
Going back into the court room, Reed makes his final statement:
comparing the Super-Powers Registration Act to the Mutant Registration Act.
Pointing out how can someone like Spider-Man be classified, is he a super-human, or a mutant?
He also asks what the definition is of someone who is extraordinary from a normal human
pointing out that anyone in the court room outside of the Fantastic Four could meet that classification.
Reed then pulls out a device to see if the Senators would register for the potential for super-powers.
Reed's device indicates that they, and the security guard on hand could all potentially have super-powers.
Finally, Reed points out that they could potentially be invading people's privacy
and limiting their freedoms based on government classifications.
With his point punctuated, Reed rests his case and the Senate decides against implementing the Super-Powers Registration Act.

As they are leaving, Ben remarks how Reed had his scanner turned up to maximum sensitivity to prove his point.
Reed quips that they can't be too careful, and laughs about the idea that members of the Senate could be super-heroes.
The Fantastic Four then allow Franklin to go to his much anticipated trip to the Smithsonian
with Ms. Marvel while the rest of the team return home to the Four Freedoms Plaza.

There, Reed examines the device and learns the origins of its components,
tracking them to a technology company that went out of business a few months earlier.
The Fantastic Four decide to go an investigate, but before they leave Ben
puts on his old Thing exoskeleton in order to be a part of any potential battles.
The group goes crashing into the abandoned warehouse where they find what appears to be their old foe Doctor Doom.
Doom explains that he is part of a cabal of super-villains who masterminded a conspiracy
to try and destroy their enemies by pitting them against foes they never faced before.
When Johnny suddenly attacks "Doom", they quickly realize that it is actually one of his Doombots instead.

With the Doombot's destruction, it releases the Super-Adaptoid, which quickly begins to adapt the Fantastic Four's powers.
However before the android can attack, the Thing manages to knock it down with a single punch.
As they are preparing to leave they are suddenly confronted by both Hydro-Man and the Water Wizard.
However instead of attacking the Fantastic Four, the two begin arguing with each other
over who has the better control over water and a fight breaks out between the two of them.
Ben remarks how this is going to be an amusing fight, but quickly slips on a puddle of water
and come crashing down, much to the amusement of his teammates.

Well, I really like Sharon's costume, but a new, well-designed FF costume could be interesting!

    Fantastic Four #337 Feb 1990
    "Into the Time Stream!"
The Fantastic Four are awoken from their sleep by the sound of an alarm coming from Reed's lab.
They rush there to see Reed working desperately over a massive machine.
After taking some readings he orders Sue to place an invisible force field against a part of the room.
When she does, the walls suddenly year open revealing an endless void on the other side.
Before Reed can answer their questions, he activates shielding walls to cover open the hole and has Sue drop her force field.
Then inspecting the area near the wall, he finds metal fragments that confirm his suspicions.
As Reed begins trying to analyze the data, Johnny manages to get an explanation from him:
that tear in the wall was a glimpse of the future, their future.

Reed goes on to explain that he is following up on something he started
to investigate during he and Sue's brief stint with the Avengers.
He tells them about a previous Avengers mission that brought them to
a Time Bubble that exists some 20 years in the future that is virtually impenetrable.
Reed explains that its is speculated that a renegade Celestial is
responsible for the Bubble and is using it to hide a weapon of incalculable power.
The Avengers attempted to pierce the bubble in order to stop the Council of Cross-Time Kangs from obtaining it.

Reed explains his latest experiment, the Radical Dodecahedron a device that will allow him to pierce through time and space.
He goes on to tell his teammates that the bomb that was unleashed was an attempt to destroy his invention.
Reed demonstrates why by taking Ben's cigar and placing it on a device.
When he transports it a few seconds into the future it blinks out of time momentarily.
However when Reed tries to send it some 100 years in the future, nothing happens.
He finishes his demonstration by explaining that the Time Bubble prevents anything from travelling forward in time beyond its creation point.
Reed then tells his team that they are going to try and find a way to destroy the Time Bubble and save their future.

While Sue calls the Power family to see if they can babysit Franklin, Reed tries to take a nap.
His dreams are haunted by a blue skinned woman who tries to seduce him, but he resists due to the love he has for his wife.
Meanwhile, Ben and Sharon are paying a visit to the construction site where Avengers Mansion is being rebuilt.
There they meet with Captain America and Thor to discuss the Fantastic Four's mission to try and pierce the Time Bubble.
Hearing about their mission, Thor agrees to accompany them due to his past experience with the Time Bubble.

While back at the Four Freedoms Plaza, Johnny is training and exhausts himself. His wife Alicia suggests that Johnny should take a nap.
When he does, his dreams are also invaded by the strange blue skinned woman.
In this dream the woman is terrorized by a monster which Johnny destroys with his flame powers.
The woman thanks Johnny with a kiss that he resists at first, then allows to have happen.

After Sue drops Franklin off at the Power home, the Fantastic Four are also visited
by Iron Man who has flown in from the west coast to assist them on their mission.
Reed shows his friends his invention that he hopes will help them pierce the Time Bubble: his Time-Sled, dubbed the Rosebud II.
As they prepare to depart, Iron Man brings up possible interference from Kang,
but Reed is certain that their foe is unable to locate the Time Bubble.
Before they leave, Alicia tries to kiss Johnny goodbye, but he suddenly
sees her as a the blue woman from his dream and freaks out momentarily.
With everything in order, the Fantastic Four and their two allies board the Time-Sled.

When the device is activated they begin travelling through the time stream.
Soon they are visited by an infinite number of versions of themselves traversing time to reach the same location.
As they speed ahead of the others, Johnny is suddenly haunted by visions of the mystery woman from his dream.
Moments later they begin to approach the barrier of the Time Bubble.
Reed and Iron Man complete their last calculations just seconds before they slam into the barrier....

She was the longest serving replacement member in the history of FF.

I hate to see that she is just ignored now by writers.

Slott used her in The Initiative.... Can he restore her already?!?

Yes, I agree. I don't know why Marvel ignores some of their characters.

Always thought Ms. Marvel/Shary had potential:

I love that cover. Sharon was a great choice to carry on the name and costume of Ms Marvel (albeit with the new colors making it her own).

I also loved Sharry having two code names (Ms Marvel and She-Thing)!

I've always thought they should have Carol Danvers and Shary meet at some point. In a lot of ways, Shary's life is a dark reflection of Carol's. Both of them had sexist fathers (Carol was driven to succeed in spite of her dad, whereas Shary tried to earn her dad's respect and prove she was just as good as any son could have been). Both of them had some military background, but while Carol had a successful career in the Air Force as a pilot and an intelligence operative, Shary got discharged from the Academy. Both of them have dealt with power fluctuations over the years, and been transformed into something other than human. Both of them are survivors of sexual assault.

Although Carol has had her struggles and developed an alcohol addiction, she has emerged the other side as one of the most prominent heroes in the Marvel Universe these days as Captain Marvel. Shary, on the other hand, has not fared as well--she's struggled with anger issues and loss of intelligence (during some stages of her mutations), and fell into criminal activity and wound up in jail. Given how many parallels there have been between Carol and Shary's lives, it is interesting to see how they've ended up in such different fates. I'd be really curious to see how the two of them would interact.

She needs a What if...What if Sharon Ventura got different powers from cosmic rays. There are like 11 other options. The other 3 FF, The U-Foes, and Red Ghost and the Super Apes.

Not a bad idea but the Cosmic Rays could have granted her anything.

Her becoming a She-Thing is very reminiscent of Carol becoming Ms. Marvel. Radiation in close proximity to the male counterpart.

I would turn this into something else like make her a latent Inhuman with the power to turn into various types of She-Things at will. This could explain her morphing into the different forms we’ve already seen.
