Illyana Rasputina: Magik Appreciation 2020

So far I count Magik appearance through overall of 2020:

She has made 43 appearance in the comic mainstreams through 2020. (Including the upcoming 2 issue for New Mutants and Savage Avengers respectively) The most of her appearance in the recent years.

She has to have an idea where she's going so she doesn't teleport into the vacuum of space or the middle of a star. Think how Han explains why the Falcon needs to make navicomputer calculations before they can go into hyperspace in Star Wars. Maybe someone who is invulnerable and can breathe in space like America Chavez doesn't have to worry about that, but any teleporter who doesn't have those specific abilities is going to eventually die a very gruesome death if they keep teleporting without knowing exactly where they're going.

Illyana has had some sensing feats though. When she was locked up, she sensed that the new mutants traveled to the wrong Hell. They ended up in Mephisto's not Hela's.

She also teleported a room in the x-masion infected with the transcmode virus beyond the end of reality.

Magik can definitely travel across dimensions, Illyana taught Doug how to teleport into different Hell Realms. Illyana teleported Colossus from the Crimson Cosmos right on top of Kuurth in San Francisco. She also found Gamora and Beast across the galaxy when she ported in with Rocket.

Limbo has been described as an ominiversal Nexus connected to all realties. She technically could teleport anywhere. Isn't teleporting the Peak from Earth 616 into Otherworld another example of her teleporting to another dimension? She also found Legion outside existence itself (although this might be bringing him back from something like death?) via magic.

Illyana gets nerfed quite a lot due to plot. Don't really know why they need krakoan portals with Magik around. She could technically just attack from Limbo all the time. Ex. Dropping Juggy on top of that Asgardian Dragon or Colossus on top of Kurth. She could just open a portal and stab someone from behind from a different century. She could teleport a blitzing horde of unstoppable aliens/demons right on top of an opponent like she did to the summoners or telefrag multiple opponents from a different dimension. She threatened to teleport Hulk into the sun.

Kang said her demons were destroying entire timelines Along with all the heroes in it.

Her teleporting powers alone could cause an insane amount of destruction.

Are all the Hell Realms considered different dimensions? I think I recall reading that all these Hell Realms used to be part of a giant realm. They're called splinter realms because of this.

Question. The two black extensions protruding from Majik's hair, does anybody know if they serve some type of purpose? Or is it just a design feature? I've recently become a fan of Majik over Hickmans' run. I've tried to find out but no luck. Thanks in advance to anybody who knows.

I think the most logical conclusion is that they are just a headpiece.
This is my personal interpretation but I like to think they are her "horns"

It's supposed to be a headband. It's rarely drawn as one, but that's what it's supposed to be.

She can sense magical disturbances and possibly high power levels in general by virtue of being a sorceress. That doesn't mean she can sense what's in a non-magical dimension without having been there first.

Her teaching teleportation and transportation spells to Pixie and Doug is an interesting point in that it shows she doesn't need her mutant power to teleport. She knows at least one spell for teleportation that has proven to be able to put Nightcrawler to shame when Pixie used it and Illyana still chooses to use her stepping disks instead.

As for why they need the Krakoa gates if they have Illyana, Illyana can't be everywhere at once. If she's off on a mission then she's not available for transport. The gates serve other functions as well, allowing mutant civilians to come to Krakoa whenever they want without contacting anyone first as well as a diplomatic function by giving world governments an idea of where Krakoan mutants would appear. In theory they could have her sitting in front of a giant monitor making portals for everyone who needs to go somewhere. but if she did that she wouldn't be able to function as a captain or go into combat herself and her sorcery would go to waste.

Also, it's pretty weird for me to see Illyana and Emma acting this close in Captain Marvel. Even though they've been on the same team most of the time for the last 10 years, they've never acted like they're anything more than acquaintances. I guess being 2 of the only X-Men left alive made them grow closer over the years.

Also that would be a terrible relationship other mutants would have with her if they tried to exclusively rely on her for teleportation. She’s not Magik bus company or Magik airlines. There are tge Jeakoa gates, other teleporters, and other means of transportation like space ships on Cable’s body sliding.

She's mystically bounded her portals in place. She permanently bonded one of her discs in the x-mansion's attic.

Although when it comes to Magik, or any other powerful magic user/reality warper, the sheer versatility of their powerset makes them hard to write on a consistent power level, especially when functioning in a team book. There is usually a spell for any situation. Strange, Magik and the Savage Avengers were breathing on the moon. Magik's armor turned into a space suit in Marvel Zombies and her magical shields could arguably be used ala Magneto to survive in space.

In X of Swords finale, did she actually break through all the Otherword protections and open a portal from Earth straight to Otherworld? There was a lot of dialogue that travel was only possible either via the Krakoa Eternal gate or indirectly through Avalon. Also, the portal was HUMONGOUS!

I understood that she did, but also that if she wasn't able to do it before, it's because Saturnyne's magic was blocking her.
So, imo, the safest assumption is that she was able to open that gigantic portal because Saturnyne let her magic defenses down(she did the same with the telepathic link Cable and Jean had)

She also teleported the wine glasses during the dinner before the tournament. Since her portals go through Limbo first it would seem there was nothing stopping her from going in and out of Otherworld as she pleased then.
