Default Ben Reilly: Scarlet Spider Appreciation 2020

Ben Reilly: Scarlet Spider Appreciation 2020

    Wikipedia blurb;
"Benjamin Reilly (/ˈraɪli/), also known as the Scarlet Spider, is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. He is a clone and ally of the original Spider-Man (Peter Parker) and is prominent in the 1994–96 "Clone Saga" storyline, which led to his murder by the Green Goblin (Norman Osborn).

Created by writer Gerry Conway, the character first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #149 (October 1975). During the "Clone Saga" storyline, he came to wear a makeshift costume similar to Spider-Man's consisting of a blue sleeveless hoodie sweatshirt adorned with black motifs of a spider on its front and back, over a red spandex bodysuit and mask, with utility belts and wrist-worn sizable web-shooters that were designed by artist Tom Lyle,[2] before donning a variation of Spider-Man's costume designed by artist Mark Bagley as his successor for some time before his death.

In 2017's "Dead No More: The Clone Conspiracy" story arc, the character was resurrected. In the 2017 series Ben Reilly: The Scarlet Spider, he reclaims his Scarlet Spider identity and reimagined by Marvel Comics' creative teams as an antihero, starting a spiritual quest to redeem himself as a true hero once more and has completed it in another arc, "Spider-Geddon", again serving as Spider-Man's heroic ally."

Hopefully, 2020 will be kinder to Ben than the past few years have been.

Agreed. Also, the TAS origin for Ben Reilly was a good way of streamlining what was a very confusing and tangled web of plot in the original comics.

Just keep Peter David off his book, have someone who wrote the 90's Clone Saga work him into something fresh.

Yes! Anyone who had a hand in molding his backstory and development, PAD can stick with 2099 and that'd be fine but his run with Reilly obviously did not shine.

Fingers crossed for a Ben on-going or mini this year. I’d love to see Ben used more in some capacity. I’d like for him to become a regular cast member in Miles book. Maybe working at his school. He could be Miles support, providing him with web-fluid and being his person to cover for him while he’s out of class, doing the hero thing. And when he needs back-up, Ben can suit up.

But ideally, I want a Scarlet Spiders book, with Ben and Kaine as traveling brothers, kicking ass and taking names. But they would need an overall object to be on the road. Maybe hunting down a surviving Jackel clone, maybe the Scier group? I dunno, but give the brothers a purpose!

Would love to see Ben visit/see his old cast at the Daily Grind again, see how they all react when they last heard/saw, he was dead.

That would be nice to see. Could go with the Scriers and maybe tracking down the surviving "reanimates" from The Clone Conspiracy, particularly focusing on those who decided to still be criminals with their second chance at life, since Ben would feel responsible for unleashing them on the world.

Seems Ben had a surprise appearance in Conan: Battle for the Serpent’s Crown. Gotta say, was not expecting Ben’s first appearance since Spider-Geddon to be in a Conan book.

Y'know, that second costume of Reilly's is still awesome to this day. I actually prefer that one over the all red and blue hoodie suit. Come to think of it, I think it's surprising how it wasn't one of the many skins available for Insomniac's game from a year and half back.

Worth picking up for Ben fans?

-Pav, who needs more than a single panel...
You were Spider-Man then. You and Peter had agreed on it. But he came back right when you started feeling comfortable.
You know what it means when he comes back

Eh, wouldn't really say it is. He's only in it for a couple pages where he has a quick fight with Conan before getting blindsided by Nyla Skin and thrown into an electric billboard by Conan knocking him out. On the plus side though, he does definitely seem to be back to himself, even quipping while he fights Conan, so good to see that Spock fixing him stuck.
