Rahne looks good with long hair. Im fine with her having it
Hm? It's stated a few times early on it can't grow beyond the length it was in her first appearance, it's noted a few times her hair has a texture that's different than most peoples with it being implied it's fur, and Rosenberg's Uncanny, I honestly wouldn't be able to differentiate the Rahne in that series from Jean when, you know, not a wolf.
I don't remember there being an in canon reason why her hair could grow now? Just writers forgot after she spent a long time in perma half-wolf form, but she had her DNA tampered with so it's easy to no-prize, just prefer her with short spiky hair, bit more unique.

The writer's dont design the character's looks; thats on the artist. Rahne first started having long hair during the Phalanx Covenant but she was in her lupine form and remained as such until after AOA, when she moved to Excalibur. She debuted her long hair in human form in Excalibur 85 and kept it for a long time up until X-Factor chopped it off in the mid 00s
I wouldn't want that for Rahne, but an AU daughter of her and Jamie Madrox that could split into an entire pack of a half-dozen or so wolves? (Or a chimera of the two furtively cobbled together by Sinister?) Yes, please. Her and Ruby Summers and Nocturne and various other AU X-spawn can get together and have cool multidimensional adventures.
And I also prefer Rahne with short hair, or, shortish (shoulder-length, at most). Same for Sam. In his case, I feel like a buzzcut really flows well with how tall and lanky and, literally, clean-cut he is.
I think McLeod drew the long and short hair of the same color to distinguish between different members of New Mutants.
Short blonde hair for Sam, long blonde hair for Doug
Short blonde hair for Amara, long blonde hair for Magik
Short black hair for Shan, long black hair for Dani.
Rahne's hair can be short or long because there's no other redheads in New Mutants although it's more natural for a wolf to have short fur.
Doug and Illyana joined after McLeod’s tenure so that may have been his cutoff for the characters presented in that grouping.
Karma’s hair became long during her time surviving in a desert in Asgard. That was post-Shadow King, and also where she shed her excess weight from her period of being controlled by him.
(Theres a Jessica Jones/Purple Man story angle in there I’m surprised no one has picked up on)
On the topic of Rahne’s appearance:
YES
NO!!
Jessica Jones? Purple Man?
