Magik's origin was quite convoluted, that's why it had to be told later. I felt that the original 5 New Mutants were somewhat modified modern counterparts to the original 5 X-Men.

Sunspot = Cyclops (absorb solar energy)
Cannonball = Angel (flight)
Karma = Jean Grey (psionic)
Dani = ? (image projection)
Wolfsbane = Beast (enhanced strength and agility)


Only Dani's powers was unique and didn't match Iceman's powers.

Sunspot as a Cyclops analog is a bit of a stretch. Maybe if he was shooting blasts out of his hands but thats not something that would happen until much much later and long after Claremont wrote him

I'd say Sunspot is more like Angel coming from wealth and being charming. Cannonball is more like Cyclops with his struggle to control is powers, though Dani is the one whose leadership abilities are compared to Cyclops.

But really, whenever they do the whole original 5 counterparts, at least one character is always off.

It's not surprising at all. The top 5 are the original New Mutants who appeared in issue #1. except for Magik

Come to think of it. Magik should have appeared in issue #1 instead of Wolfsbane.

Claremont should have predicted that Magik would be more popular than Rahne.

Magik was in issue #1 and appeared as a supporting character throughout the early issues until she would finally join herself. I think CC always intended for her to become a member.

The OG NM almost feel like a deconstruction of the 05 to me...explicitly diverse and given a deeper emphasis on characterization/character development that the O5 didn't get in their early years...but then again that's basically what Claremont already did with Giant-Size , its definitely a style thing for him

imo most of the time a team "mirrors' the O5 or other older counterparts its usually just coincidence - down to tropes etc.

agreed. I dont think most writers try to emulate the O5 when it comes to creating teams unless thats a story plot point

It's not a bit of stretch. Cyclops eye blast are derived from solar energy absorption just like Sunspot.

Sunspot initially stored the energy in its body without blasting it out but later he managed to blast it out.

We are talking about mutant powers and not character-wise.

Cannonball can fly whereas Cyclops can't.

Dani powers isn't anything like Cyclops.

If we want to talk about leadership, then it would be Karma as she was the team's first leader.

You said she wasnt in the first issue and he simply corrected you in that she was.

How would it have been better for her had she been a member in #1? She became the breakout star once she joined and to this day she manages to be one of the, if not the top NM. CC did things right with her and it gave the other characters a chance to shine before Magik stole the show

I mean she wasn't in the first issue as a member of the New Mutants team or else she would have been in that cover.

She officially joined the team at issue #14 before Cypher and Warlock joined so other characters like Cypher didn't get a chance to shine before Magik stole the show.
