Polaris and Havok were certainly second wave because they were created by different writers and came much later.

Yes, totally agree. The first wave was Claremont's New Mutants, the second wave was Simonson's New Mutants.

The ones who joined in the first issue should be called First 5 or Original 5 .

I tend to divide them into the 'classic New Mutants' and the 'second generation.' The classic are those who were joined in the first 20 issues or so, so Warlock is the last 'classic New Mutant.

The classic New Mutants is what the others call first wave/generation who joined in the first 20 issues and were all created by Chris Claremont.

The biggest change that even I saw, way back then, was that they went from the most diverse team I'd ever seen (three out of five!), to more blue-eyed blonde caucasians than anything else (Sam, Amara, Doug, Ilyanna). That was a bit of a disappointment, to me, especially Amara, who started out in 'redface' appearing as a South American native, and then turned out to be another blonde. Ilyanna being blonde, exactly nothing like either of her brothers, or her parents, was also a typical comics move. (You heard it here first, Ilyanna's a plant! She's not even related to Colossus!)

I think making Amara a redhead (instead of blonde) would have been more interesting to match her powers.

Rahne already had red hair. Amara should have been a latina as she was in X-men Evolution for actual visual diversity

Illyana is in a weird place, as she is much older as a character than the rest. She first showed up in Giant Size, debuting alongside Storm and the others. As a kid, sure, but she kept showing up here and there. Nova Roma was supposed to be a mixed civilization, as ancient Romans and the last of the Incans fused together. However both the city and its citizens were always depicted as white. By rights, Magma should look like a latina, as a roman-incan population would look pretty much like what latins are (spanish + native american in different proportions).

Frankly, there were too many girls in the first generation. I wished that Chris had created another New Mutant guy instead. Four guys and four girls (humans only and not alien like Warlock).

Does anybody remember this guy in New Mutants Forever? I believe his name is Tiberius, he would have made a great addition to Nova Roma story instead of Magma.

He stands out from Doug, Cannonball and the other blondies.

I said strawberry blonde and thats a medium between blonde and red hair. His hair right there is colored exactly how Dazzler's used to be and she also is a strawberry blonde

and Ive made the caveat and showed you pictures where he is colored with lighter hair as a strawberry blonde which was very similar to his other blonde teammates. He wasnt colored dark like Rahne for example. It was largely more on the blonde side
