She was intended to be very athletic, at least at first. She made it through her first time in the danger room (issue #1, I think) just on athletic skill. Of course, the brood-infested Xavier cheated and knocked her out at the end. I think she was referred to as being near Olympic level in that issue. And most of her fight scenes after she lost her powers involved athleticism. Heck, when she showed up again after getting kicked out of Asgard, she was shown swinging from a chandelier by her legs.
Dani was paired with Nightcrawler in that cover so we see the similarities. Nightcrawler's mutant power is teleportation whereas Dani's mutant power is fear images. Both are excellent athletes in addition to their mutant powers.
I know people hate to admit it here but Karma was meant to be the Jean Grey of the team instead. She was shown to be a telepath in Zeb Wells' run and trained by Emma to develop her telepathic powers besides the possession power that she was already skilled in.
Dani has always been portrayed as more physical (not more mental) with her arrows, horse and later psychic arrows. She was meant to be an Apache warrior in addition to her mutant power. Dani was always the one portrayed carrying spears, arrows and something physical whereas Karma was always portrayed as having a psychic signature around her head.

When Dani lost her mutant power, she was still useful in a fight because she still had her athletic fighting skill.
Remember this scene here in Zeb Wells' run?

Still salty the whole "Rahne's hair is wolf fur that can't grow" thing was dropped after the initial New Mutants run, she was looking like Jean Grey a year ago, baffling.
Also man, that recent New Mutants issue, gotta say, while is was perfectly competently done, Glob getting a big character moment before the majority of the classic New Mutants, who have mostly been used for jokes and fights, was a bit of a breaking point for me. I still read my scraps of New Mutants, but I'm definitely feeling saltier about this book than I was just two days ago. Really feels like Brisson's been saddled with characters he doesn't want.
It was stated somewhere that Rhane had gained enough control over her shape-shifting to increase her hair length at will.
