How often did supervillains kill any character in 60s Marvel? Why couldn't Gwen Stacy be famous in universe as the moment when villains started being more violent and killing civilians seemingly at random. That, theoretically, could make her a famous crime case (The same way Kitty Genovese or Leopold and Loeb are famous one off killings). Add in the fact that her father had also been killed by a random supervillain, maybe the Stacys are quite famous in 616 as victims of supervillain violence on a level that hadn't been seen up until that point.
She's actually not that famous. In the Marvels miniseries starring Phil Sheldon he interviewed Gwen and even bonded with her before she ended up as Osborn's bridge victim. What ultimately broke him was the fact that she wasn't enough to make a blip. She didn't even didn't even make the front page on the paper; that was given to Norman Osborn who died as well while Gwen was crammed into paragraph 10 as an afterthought.

He even brings up that George Stacy was brought up but only because the front page accused Spider-Man of murder and so they dragged Captain Stacy out as 'proof' of him being a murderer. So no, neither of the Stacys are any more famous than the dozens (hundreds) of libel cases Jonah made against Spidey.

Helps sell the old and wearied detective angle...

Yeah, because Norman was a rich and famous businessman, so of course his death would be perceived by the media as "more newsworthy" than that of a regular college student, even if that college student's dad was an NYPD captain who happened to have died beforehand.

Exactly, so Gwen Stacy wouldn't be making any slashes even if Spider-Gwen is a blonde who introduced herself as such. The only one who'd notice is Jackal who's so obsessed that he knew who Gwen was even with a fake name and a low profile.

I still think she should probably change her name that she uses publicly in 616 because a quick google search would probably dredge up more questions than she probably has answers for...
