Marvel's Star Wars Relaunch

I was surprised to see there was not much discussion about the latest issue. This is covering a time in the SW universe that has greatly interested me and that we haven't really seen since Shadows of The Empire. I thought issue 1 is off to a very strong start. What were your thoughts?

Although the original Marvel run covered the year between Empire and Jedi back in the day, it never did give us the evolution of Luke Skywalker that we all knew must have happened in that time. There exists a world of difference between the Luke who snuck into Cloud City at the end of Empire and the figure in black who strides purposefully up to the door of Jabba's palace and plainly states his intentions to rescue his friend and it looks like this series is finally going to give us that journey.

ROTJ's version of Luke now kind of seems the odd one out-mostly confident, driven, even a bit intimidating at times especially when he address Jabba and Palpatine.

It doesn't seem out of joint to me, it actually plays into his failure which led to the grumpy Luke we saw latter on.

If filling in the gap between Episode 5 and 6 is the purpose of this comic relaunch then it's entirely unnecessary. We already got a great version of the journey in the 90s with Shadows of the Empire, as the OP already alluded to. Marvel will need to find a new hook if they want to justify their book's existence.

Shadows of the Empire is Legends continuity only, so the canon timeframe is wide open for exploration (heck, Moving Target, Lost Stars, and the Smuggler's Guide already retconned Shadows out of canon). Even if you want to discount that, Shadows was set just before ROTJ. That leaves a whole year open for new stories. Besides, we're getting this in comic form, with a Vader series (not much with Vader as the POV during the '90s when Shadow was being made) and the Doctor Aphra series (featuring a character not created when Shadows was being made, so new things to explore).

Marvel would do well to learn the lesson from Disney's failures and stop trying to re-tread old ground, that is unless they want to reboot their Star Wars comics for a third time in 18 months or so.

Straw man. The response was not if people shouldn't read Legends stuff, but why write more stories in this era. Clearly there are a lot of reasons. (Also, the "Star Wars Legend" relabel isn't a negative thing; same as saying "Transformers G1." Helps us keep the iterations straight.)

Maybe, maybe not. (Not so sure about "engrained." Far as I can tell, the stuff that's engrained is the movies, the cartoons, and maybe the original Thrawn books. The Shadows stuff may be a rung lower.)

Funny thing that, Marvel has shown better handling w/ Star Wars r.e. timing relaunches and all that then they have with their own stuff.
