Using guns is never well seen, unless you are a fan of the Punisher. And although dealing with normal goons is admirable, Spider-Man's enemies are beyond "regular". MJ is a really impressive woman by her own, I won't say other way, but she's still a regular woman trapped in a crossfire of super-powers. So even if she doesn't put on a suit, having powers would definitely help her to survive.

MJ's versatile. A gun, a baseball bat, her own wits...that's usually what she needs to get by .

Felicity's a really poor comparison, as she herself is actually a composite of three comic characters. She has very little in common with her comics namesake and adapted stories of Barbara Gordon and Wendy Harris (from the 2011 and 2009 Batgirl series respectively). MJ is more like Lois Lane, except she isn't a journalist.

It's not that I dislike her as much as I feel like she's overrated. It's gotten kinda ridiculous.

I'll just weigh in that MJ is a very, very, different character than Felicity Smoak.

She's more comparable to Lois Lane and even I hate that comparison (especially when MJ is a reporter).

I don't know much about Felicity, beyond a couple of episodes in Flash first season. But, yeah they don't seem to feel the same archetype. Felicity's archetype seems to be the akward adorkable nerd that is a tech expert (and there's nothing wrong with that archetype). MJ has always been more the social butefly type with a silly side that she exagerates but is not completly an act, so the comparison feel very off.
