    Captain Marvel #37 Mar 1975
    "Lift-Off!"
Ant-Man and the Wasp provide Captain Mar-Vell with an important clue
in tracking down the Lunatic Legion that has been hounding him and Rick.
It turns out the Living Laser cyborg was powered by a crystal
processed from rock found only on the Blue Area of the Moon.
Mar-Vell wants to head to the Moon immediately to investigate, but Rick convinces
him to at least let him clear an absence with his manager and singing partner first.
Rick goes to promise his manager Boggs that he'll be back by Thursday, but before he leaves,
his singing partner Dandy offers him a pill of "Vitamin C" in case things "get boring".
Rick is dubious of the pill, but holds onto it.
After stopping by Avengers Mansion to get Rick a space suit

based on Iron Man's armor, Captain Mar-Vell begins a ten-hour flight to the Moon.

Not long after leaving Earth's atmosphere, Captain Mar-Vell is attaked
by another agent of the Lunatic Legion, calling himself Nimrod, the Hunter.
Mar-Vell makes short work of the attacker, identifying him as a robot and breaking him into pieces before continuing on.
In the Negative Zone, Rick is attacked by Annihilus again, but one instinctive punch assisted by his space armor
shatters Annihilus into countless tiny Annihili that fly off swearing vengeance. Rick figures because Annihilus
is like an insect it makes sense that he would actually be a colony of small bugs disguised as a larger one.

Getting bored with the trip, Rick shrugs and pops the pill Dandy gave him and begins to hallucinate.
Due to his mind gradually merging with his alter-ego, Mar-Vell starts to feel adverse effects as well

just as he's arriving at the Watcher's base on the Moon.
When Uatu shows up, he's uncharacteristically active and attacks Captain Mar-Vell,
whose dulled reflexes and warped vision leave him helpless. The Watcher is desperate,
finding himself in a spiral of outrageous acts to cover up earlier ones
and now feels like he has no choice but to turn Mar-Vell over to the Lunatic Legion.

    Incredible Hulk #245 Mar 1980
"When the Hulk comes Raging!" Guest-starring Captain Mar-Vell.
Remembering that Jarella's body is being kept at Gamma Base, the Hulk bounds his way towards the New Mexico Desert.
Detecting the gamma-spawned monsters approach, Gamma Base's new commanding officer, Colonel Glenn Talbot,
sends a Hulkbuster unit to greet him. Although they greatly outnumber the Hulk and have many fantastic weapons,
the brute is so furious he is able to fend off all of their attacks and smashes their various armored vehicles.
It's then that Talbot decides to get involved personally. In a suit of Mandroid armor,
Glenn confronts the Hulk and accuses him for ruining his life and his marriage.

At that moment in Denver, Colorado, both Rick Jones
and Fred Sloan are appearing on a national talk show to talk about their mutual experiences with the Hulk.
Rick Jones as the Hulk's former sidekick, and Sloan as the Hulk's most recent companion
as well as the author of an upcoming book based on the man-monster.

They talk about how the Hulk is basically harmless so long as he isn't attacked. After the interview is over, Fred Sloan
introduces Rick to his assistant Trish Starr, and Rick introduces him to his long time ally Captain Mar-Vell and his lover Elysius.

When they catch a report that the Hulk is currently attacking Gamma Base, Mar-Vell clashes his Nega-Bands together and flies off to the base.

Back at Gamma Base, the Hulk launches his attack on Glenn Talbot. As the two men fight it out,
Talbot goes into detail about why he thinks the Hulk has ruined his life, ruined his former father-in-law and ruined his marriage.
Lastly he recalls how the Hulk saved his life by travelling into his brain and destroying the Gremlin's mental block.
Recalling how the Hulk was shrunken down into his mind, Talbot decides an ideal way of getting revenge
is to pierce into the Hulk's brain using one of the Mandroid's blades. The Hulk fights back and easily overpowers Talbot,
furious that he was attacked when all he wanted was to recover Jarella's body which has been held at Gamma Base since she died.

The power of the Hulk's blows send them crashing into the lower levels of Gamma Base. There, Talbot discovers, to his horror,
that the Mandroid armor has been disabled. Worse, the Hulk is straining to break his back. Before the Hulk can kill Talbot,
he is blasted from behind by Captain Mar-Vell. The Hulk tells the Kree warrior that he has come for his former love, Jarella.

Using his Cosmic Awareness, Mar-Vell offers to help Hulk recover Jarella
and return her body to her homeworld, but he cannot allow him to kill Glenn Talbot.

    Avengers #193 Mar 1980
    "Battleground: Pittsburgh!"
In Pittsburgh, Iron Man and Wonder Man are facing off with the new menace Inferno,
who has just destroyed Wonder Man’s signal device to summon the Avengers.
Both of them are repulsed by the angry molten menace.

Inferno stalks a terrified Tim Turpin, the co-worker who caused Joe Conroy's death.
He causes the murderer's own demise when he is crushed by a drifting barge.
Just before he dies, Turpin sees Joe Conroy’s prized Uru fragment embedded
in Inferno’s hand, and Turpin realizes who he is dealing with as he dies.

The rest of the Avengers arrive

and join Wonder Man and Iron Man in combat against the creature who is menacing motorists on the Liberty Bridge.

Stalking across the city, Inferno overturns a cable car to distract the pursuing Avengers.
The team stop their pursuit long enough to save the lives of the car’s passengers

before once again going after the flaming creature.

Inferno's real target is revealed to be the steel mill owner, Vince Paretta. Inferno corners the fleeing Paretta at his home.
When he holds out his hand to Paretta, showing him the Uru fragment, the mill owner realizes it is Joe Conroy and panics.
He confesses that he was in debt to the Maggia, which necessitated the urgency to sell the mill.
Paretta also admits that he knew Conroy was suspicious and ordered Turpin to kill him.

The Avengers arrive just in time to hear Paretta's fearful confession.
Cap corals him and warns him that he will be going to jail for what he did.

Having achieved his vengeance, the fiery Inferno feels no need to continue on.
He reflects on his now lost life as Joe Conroy, including a wife and son.
Sadly, he turns and walks away into the nearby river,
extinguishing his fire and apparently drowning himself.

Avengers Lineup: Beast, Captain America, Falcon, Ms. Marvel, Scarlet Witch, Iron Man, Vision, Wasp and Wonder Man.

Plot assist by the Pittsburgh Comix Club. Script by David Michelinie.
Art by Sal Buscema (layouts), Dan Green (finishes), and Frank Miller (assists).

Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars #11 Mar 1985
    "...And Dust To Dust!"
Doctor Doom has stolen the power of the Beyonder and appeared before the heroes gathered on Battleworld.
Removing his mask, Doom reveals that his face has been completely healed.
He then announces that with the Beyonder seemingly dead, the Secret Wars are now over.
From afar, Doom's former minions watch as Doom speaks with the heroes.
Thinking Doom has betrayed them, the Molecule Man is furious and uses his powers
to uproot the earth under the heroes and fling them across Battleworld.
When Owen Reece angrily confronts Doom, Doom merely opens up Reece's mind
and removes the mental blocks that prevented him from being able to alter the molecules of living things.
Struck by this revelation, Molecule Man suggests that they retreat and figure out their next move.
Volcana suggests her apartment and so the Molecule Man creates a ship that
will allow them to fly to the chunk of Denver that has been brought to Battleworld.

Meanwhile, the heroes regroup at Doombase to review their notes and decide what to do with the now god-like Doctor Doom.
While they discuss this, the villains have regrouped at Marsha's apartment.
There they all agree that the Secret Wars are not worth it, and want to go home even if it means forfeiting the prize.
With that, Molecule Man uses his powers to erect an air-tight dome around Denver and pull it free from Battleworld and venture off into space.
This is picked up by the heroes' scanners and when Spider-Woman expresses concern for the friends
and family she still has in Denver, Mister Fantastic regretfully tells her that there is nothing they can do.
That evening Colossus cannot sleep because of his growing feelings for the alien woman Zsaji that he has fallen in love with.
Unwilling to go forward with whatever plans until he sees her one more time, Colossus leaves in the night.
As he goes, a ball of energy arrives at Doombase and takes possession of the Hulk.
The possessed Hulk is spotted by Spider-Woman, who tries to stop him.
When the Hulk's path is impeded the energy that is possessing him switches over to her

and she continues on into the lab.
There she finds Captain Marvel -- still trapped in energy form -- as well as the severed head of Klaw.
Before she can do anything there is a blinding flash of light that causes her to scream.

When the other heroes arrive they find Klaw missing and Captain Marvel restored to normal.
They also find a message from Doctor Doom telling them to meet him at the Tower of Doom at dusk the following day.
When they wonder where the Tower of Doom is, they look out the window and see a massive stone tower off in the distance.
Doom has reformed Klaw and brought him to his side.
Having grown tired, Doom orders Klaw to guard his tower while he sleeps.

At the alien village, Zsaji is awoken by the arrival of Colossus who has brought her flowers and professes his love to her.
Back at Doombase Nightcrawler and Wolverine are looking for Colossus for the big meeting.
Wolverine points out that he is off with Zsaji and Nightcrawler laments about what this will to Piotr's girlfriend Kitty Pryde back home.
Wolverine points out that Colossus isn't really in love with Zsaji, he is just feeling the after-effects of her healing powers.
The heroes soon board a craft and fly out to Doom's tower to meet with him.
Doom announces to them that there is no more need to fight as he intends to use his omnipotence for altruistic ends.
In order to demonstrate this, he uses his power to resurrect Kang the Conqueror and return him to his own time.
He also explains that he has summoned Nova, the herald of Galactus, to recover her master from space.
He then offers to grant the heroes any wish they want in recompense for all the suffering he has caused them in the past.
When they all begin discussing it, Captain America notices that Spider-Woman is acting strangely and paying particular attention to Klaw.
Cap eventually comes back and tells Doom they want nothing.
As such Doom allows them to go free but warns them against acting against him in the future as he will destroy them instantly.
As the heroes exit, Captain America sends everyone else back so he can venture back inside and try to spy on Doom.

He finds Doom spending time with Klaw, and once detected, Doom invites the Captain in, sending Klaw away.
Down one of the corridors, Klaw is ambushed by Spider-Woman and
the energy that has been possessing her since the night before transfers to Klaw.
Captain America hears that Doom has no interest in conquering the universe and when Klaw returns
to inform him that Spider-Woman is knocked out in the hallway, Doom sends Cap away to her.
Outside he finds the others still waiting and tells them they need to call a meeting.
Elsewhere, Colossus is trying to have a romantic interlude with Zsaji but is forced to come back due to the mental summons of Professor X.
The heroes then meet back at Doombase, where they discuss whether they should go up against a god-like
Doctor Doom or leave him be, but they agree that to only go after their foe if the vote is unanimous.

Everyone agrees that Doom cannot be left with such power unchecked with almost everyone voting yes.
With the last vote boiling down to Colossus, he tearfully asks Zsaji to forgive him and votes yes.
The moment he does, the heroes are torn apart by a massive blast of energy that seemingly kills them all.

Story by Jim Shooter. Art by Mike Zeck and John Beatty.

I've been watching Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Why do they call Mar-Vell "Phillip Lawson"? In the comics, his name was Walter Lawson.
