A Magnificent Seven-ish line up. The gimmick being, the characters come from sword & sorcery slash fantasy type movies and fit certain archetypes found in this type of group.

THE HERO - Etienne of Navarre (Ladyhawke)
Labeled a rogue by his enemies, the honorable Knight put aside his own Quest and gathers a group to try and save a village beset by both evil men and black magic.

THE SMART ASS - Madmartigan of Galadoorn (Willow)
The self proclaimed “greatest swordsman that ever lived“ def. has skills. He’s also a deadpan snarker and likes pushing ppl’s buttons.

THE OTHER HERO - William Garin (The Great Wall)
It’s pretty clear this guy would be the leader if Etienne wasn’t. A professional Soldier who’s fought in Armies all over the world, he’s good w. a blade, yes, but his specialty is archery.

THE BIG GUY - Artus of Zamora (Conan The Barbarian)
The Zamoran pirate’s a badguy, but not a bad guy. Easily the biggest of the group, w. a smash mouth style of combat. He’ll provide transport and plenty of wine.

THE YOUNG GUY - Jason Tripitikas (The Forbidden Kingdom)
As the youngest of the group, w. his weapon of choice being a simple bo staff, he doesn’t impress his new companions at first. Until they see him fight and realize yeah, he can pull his weight.

THE WARRIOR GUY - D’leh of The Yagahl Tribe (10,000 B.C.)
The most primitive member of the group, armed w. a White Spear capable of taking down mammoths. He speaks a language the others don’t understand but they get by on hand signals and body language. A talented hunter/tracker he serves as scout; by day he has eyes in the sky in the form of the Hawk that is Lady Isabeau, and by night he prowls ahead w. the fearsome Wolf that Etienne becomes.

THE OLD GUY - Spook Master Gregory (Seventh Son)
Pushing seventy, Gregory’s lost a few steps physically, but makes up for it by fighting dirty. He’s been fighting the forces of evil longer than any of the others have been alive. He figures the group won’t have a chance without him.

Doing Magnificent Seven line ups is great for killing time and relieving boredom.

The gimmick this time being, the characters all come from different post apocalyptic worlds. We got a few from different after-a-nuclear-exchange desolate landscapes, a Monsterpocalypse, a Zombie Uprising, an Alien Invasion, and even a world wrecked by Dragons.

THE HERO - Max Rockatansky (Mad Max Fury Road)
Despite having a rep as a loner, Max is always joining one group or another to do something heroic. In this scenario he gathers the rest of the team to face overwhelming odds, kick some butt and save a settlement from getting wiped out.

THE SMART ASS - John Pope (Falling Skies)
Pope is def. a smart ass, the first to call bullshit on a plan or call ppl out in general. He’s also at best, an anti-hero. He’s forever trying to work an angle, but he’s good in a fight.

THE OTHER HERO - Eli (The Book of Eli)
It’s pretty clear this guy would be the leader if Max wasn’t. A blind badass Bible toting black man who gets around just fine, he’s deadly w. his signature machete and damn good w. all types of firearms.

THE BIG GUY - Shrike (Mortal Engines)
At seven feet tall and weighing several hundred pounds, Shrike’s a kind of post apocalyptic Frankenstein’s Monster, made up of dead bodies reanimated using “old tech”. His kind were called Stalkers and used as soldiers and assassins. Shrike’s scary when he’s cold and logical but downright terrifying when he reacts w. human emotions.

THE YOUNG GUY - Carl Grimes (The Walking Dead)
I’ve said it before, Carl is hella tough and was only getting tougher before being written off TWD. He grew up in a world of zombies, seeing death on the daily, been shot through the chest AND in the face, had to kill his own mom…he can hold his own on this team.

THE WARRIOR GUY - Denton Van Zan (Reign of Fire)
An American redneck rebel Viking who rides a tank, wields a battle axe and slays dragons. They should just have made the movie about him and his ppl instead of using him as a supporting character.

THE OLD GUY - Clyde Dutton (Love and Monsters)
In a world overrun by monsters, Dutton is a kind of mountain man, living off the land and following the seasons. He’s got all sorts of knowledge on the various beasts that roam around, and is handy w. various weapons. Fun fact, clyde’s the same age as Eli, but he’s the more grizzled of the two so he’s filling the old man slot on the team.

A Western Magnificent Seven, the gimmick being they all come from comedic movies/tv shows.

    THE HERO
    The Waco Kid (Blazing Saddles)

He’s the fastest gun in the West, and every other direction. The Waco Kid is all about saving the day, and puts together this posse to take on some bad guys and free a town from their clutches.

    THE SMART ASS
    Roy O’Bannon (Shanghai Noon)

A former bad guy turned good guy, Roy is all about talking himself up and impressing the ladies. He is never at a loss for words. He’s incredibly lucky, falling ass backwards into situations and generally coming out unscathed.

    THE OTHER HERO
    Nicodemus Legend (Legend)

It’s pretty clear this guy would be the leader if The Waco Kid wasn’t. Nicodemus is actually dime novelist Ernest Pratt, who assumed the persona of his own noble hero, and roams the West, trying to live up to the reputation he created. He doesn’t always get it right but he’s trying.

    THE BIG GUY
Lord Bowler (The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr.)

A bounty hunter who does the occasional Pro Bono good deed, Lord Bowler’s an impressive 6’5”, armed to the teeth, smart as a whip and quick as a cat. Basically he’s the last guy you want taking an interest in you, if you’re a bad guy.

    THE YOUNG GUY
    Ned Nederlander (Three Amigos)

In show biz since he was a child, Little Neddy looks every inch the dandy in his fancy clothes. Thing is, he’s easily the second fastest draw in the posse. A real good guy, he lives by the motto that wherever there is injustice, or suffering, or liberty is threatened, he’ll be there.

    THE WARRIOR GUY
Tommy "White Knife" Dunson Stockburn (The Ridiculous 6)

Raised by Native Americans after his mother’s murder, Tommy is a man of honor, and, capable of things like speaking w. animals, and making ppl believe he's a tumbleweed. He can take out armed gunmen w. any of the dozen or so knives he routinely carries.

    THE OLD GUY
Benny The Teen (Miracle Workers Oregon Trail)

A (mostly) reformed bad guy w. a lifetime of experience, Benny’s plundered his way across the West, and knows ppl in pretty much every town. He’s tough as shoe leather, surviving things like being shot multiple times in the back, being dragged by horses and bitten by rattlesnakes.

    That’s a good one!
It’d be fun to see the Preds up against characters like Yulaw and Selene who can match them physically.

Also it’s cool Danny Trejo will get another shot at them as Machete. His character in the 2010 movie was killed off way too easy!

Yet another team of seven, the gimmick this time being I wanted to fit bad guys into the archetypes I’ve been using.

The Villain - Ryder (The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3)
Despite his thuggish appearance, penchant for dropping F-bombs, and willingness to shoot everyone in his line of sight, Ryder’s highly educated, and originally did jail time for the white collar crime of investment fraud. He’s got himself a new kick ass crew, and his latest scheme will net them all a payday in the high 12 figures.

The Smart Ass - Brian Gamble (S.W.A.T.)
Ex Military and ex S.W.A.T., Gamble is highly trained and knows the various law enforcement playbooks chapter and verse. He’s hella cocky, a risk taker, and yes, a smart ass. Getting under an opponent’s skin is his way of gaining an advantage in a fight. He likes messing w. his teammates too, but all in good fun.

The Other Villain - Thomas Gabriel (Live Free or Die Hard)
It’s pretty clear this guy would be the leader if Ryder wasn’t. Good enough to hack and shut down N.O.R.A.D. w. an ordinary laptop, Gabriel says he doesn’t mind not being in charge, but he also makes sure everyone on the team knows it’s HIS prodigious computer skills that are needed to pull off Ryder’s plan. That creepy thousand yard stare he normally wears hints at a lot of dark **** going on behind his eyes.

The Big Guy - Klaus (Fast & Furious 6)
On a team where everyone quietly (and not so quietly) believes they’re the smartest guy in the room, Klaus knows exactly what he brings to the table. He’s the muscle. Superhumanly strong w. insane damage soak, his Military training is geared towards driving all types of vehicles, deploying explosives and using heavy assault weapons. In the end he’s getting the same monetary cut as everyone else, which makes him pretty smart, really.

The Young Guy - Walter Mabry (Now You See Me 2)
Already richer than a small Country, Mabry is the team’s money man, as he knows you have to spend it to make it. Honestly he just really gets off on things like this. The opportunity to see ppl conned killed and otherwise put through Hell really does it for him. At the end of the day making a profit is just icing on his sadistic slice of cake.

The Warrior Guy - Wah Sing Ku (Lethal Weapon 4)
A negotiator for the Chinese Triads, Wah Sing Ku emigrated to the U.S. to work as an independent contractor. In China men like him are elite, but not rare. In America though, he is “exotic”. His look, MA prowess, and criminal acumen let him command insane amounts of money. His current teammates, cocky as most of them are, treat him w. the proper level of respect.

The Old Guy - Sloan (Wanted)
Once the head of a secret Fraternity of assassins w. global influence and unlimited funds, Sloan’s fallen on hard times. Though he still dresses well and spends money freely he basically lives job to job. He’s looking at this job’s payday as his retirement fund, letting him spend his twilight years in the lavish style to which he’s become accustomed. Though still spry, Sloan doesn’t engage in physicality. His contribution is as a gunman and sniper. He’s able to literally curve bullets in mid flight, making impossible shots.

Flipping the script on the A-Team formula. Very fun build!

SGM Jonas “Snake Doctor” Blane THE UNIT
    as COL John “Hannibal” Smith

Both characters have cool nicknames. Both are great leaders and tacticians. Neither character is young, but can hang w. ppl half their age in h2h, and are proficient w. any weapon they decide to carry or run across in the field. Married w. one child, Blane officially retired back in 2010, so for him to come back now in 2021, and essentially start freelancing as a mercenary, makes me think there’s something we’re not seeing and he’s not talking about.

    Burke RAMPAGE
    as B.A. Baracus

Both characters are the big men for their teams (Burke is 6’5”, 285lbs). B.A. stands for bad attitude, and Burke HAS a bad attitude. Former U.S. Army Special Forces, Burke had been freelancing for several years when in 2018 he hired out to retrieve a high value package for the Energyne Corporation. He wound up encountering a giant mutated wolf named Ralph and was literally swallowed and spit back out, to watch his team get killed. When he later found out what Energyne had done and was responsible for, he vowed to never again work for a shady client. Unlike B.A. Burke has no issues flying, and serves as Blane’s chopper pilot. His encounter w. the giant mutated wolf named Ralph though, has left him w. a near crippling case of Cynophobia, be it wolves, attack dogs, teacup poodles or cute little puppies.

Tej Parker FAST & FURIOUS FRANCHISE
    as H.M. “Howling Mad” Murdock

Both characters are fun loving jokesters who can be kind of flighty. Both are also good enough to get away w. that behavior. A self taught combat driver, M.I.T. level engineer, hacker and gearhead, Tej brings a lot to the table. He designs and builds Blane a high tech mobile H.Q. in the shape of a classic black and metallic grey 1983 GMC Vandura van w. a stylish red pinstripe and matching black and red turbine mag wheels and rooftop spoiler. As mentioned, Tej is a jokester, and he immediately makes it his mission to get his new teammate, the gargantuan and taciturn Burke, to laugh. Tej was highly recommended to Blane by an old acquaintance, Mr. Nobody. W. the blessings of Dom, Letty, Roman, and the rest of his family, Tej embarks on a new chapter in his life.

    Aiden Shaw BLOOD & TREASURE
    as Templeton “Face Man” Peck

Both characters are handsome, nearly always impeccably well dressed, and like the ladies. Both love the thrill and the art of the con nearly as much as the profits the cons generate. An international arms dealer w. worldwide connections (criminal, legal, and female), Shaw’s operation becomes collateral damage as Blane and his team roll through Milan chasing a terrorist. Shaw demands restitution and instead gets offered a spot on the team. Blane gets a valuable underworld asset and Shaw gets to work his cons in a slightly different manner. The second biggest man on the team, Shaw is, well, kinda wimpy. He’s one of those punch someone out then shake your hand in pain kind of fighters. Shaw finds using his skills to help ppl pretty interesting, actually.

A whacked out Film Noir version of The Wizard of Oz.

Mathilda (The Professional), on her way to getting her life straight, accidentally kills notorious criminal Mama Fratelli (The Goonies), rescuing a bunch of kids (The Goonies) in the process.

Thats my Dorothy, Wicked Witch of The East, and Munchkins.

Mama Fratelli was the US narcotics distributer for "La Reina" Elena Sanchez (Savages), who targets Mathilda in retaliation. On the run, Mathilda runs into a German Shepherd named Max (Max), a former Marine Service Dog w. PTSD.

The two quickly bond, and decide to stick together.

Thats my Wicked Witch of The West and Toto.

Mathilda's soon contacted by Grace Faraday (Gangster Squad), who works for Mia Wallace (Pulp Fiction). Mia hates Elena Sanchez for trying to sleep w. her husband Marcellus, and instructs Grace Faraday to help Mathilda on the sly.

Grace Faraday tells Mathilda about a man in Seattle who has a reputation for being able to solve anyone's problems almost as if by magic. The man's name is Kevin Lomax (The Devil's Advocate), Senior Partner at the law firm of Milton Chadwick Waters. Grace Faraday assures Mathilda Kevin Lomax will be able to give her a new identity and safe place for her and Max to call home. All Mathilda and Max have to do is follow the drug pipeline that runs from Mexico and into the US, branching off to all the major cities. The pipeline has safehouses Mathilda can use as she goes.

Thats my North/South Witches and my Wizard/Man behind The Curtain, and Yellow Brick Road.

Despite following the drug pipeline, using safehouses and keeping a low profile, Mathilda is tracked down and nearly killed several times by Elena Sanchez's enforcers in the US, The Swole Boys Motorcycle Club (The Mayans). The 'roided up mean ass muscle heads are known for the cartoon gorilla on their club colors.

    Thats my Flying Monkeys.

Mathilda seems to have someone looking out for her though, maybe Léon from up in Heaven. When she needs help the most she runs into three men who vow to protect her on her trip to Seattle, and ask Kevin Lomax for some magical help while they're at it.

Leonard Shelby (Memento), an amnesiac who's going to ask Keven Lomax to fix his brain and restore his fractured memory. Lethal assassin Chev Chelios (Crank), who seems made of iron but desperately needs a heart. Leo Getz (Lethal Weapon 2), an accountant and one time money launderer who's being chased by several criminals who want him to take up his old job in their service. He's going to ask Kevin Lomax to get them off his back, as he's too afraid to do it himself.

Thats my Uncle Henry, my Scarecrow, my Tin Man, and my Cowardly Lion.

An evil version of The A-Team, using nineties bad guys.
    Why nineties bad guys?
Because they were over the top fun!

    ERIC QUALEN (Cliffhanger 1993)
    as COL John “Hannibal” Smith

A former Military Intelligence Officer turned expert thief. He loves it when his evil plans come together. John Lithgow has said he had a lot of fun making this movie, and it shows in his scenery chewing performance. Qualen’s a very underrated nineties bad guy!

    CASTOR TROY (Face/Off 1997)
    as Templeton “Face Man” Peck

A good looking fast talking lady loving sharp dressing money spending SoB, who also happens to be a psychotic terrorist for hire, when he isn’t just doing it for fun. Anything Qualen needs for a plan, Castor Troy can totally scam.

    SWAMP THING (Con Air 1997)
    as H.M. “Howling Mad” Murdock

He was the low key most important character in Con Air. I mean, no Swamp Thing, no movie! Def. the chillest bad guy on this team; Qualen tolerates his laid back white trash persona and jokes because he’s just that good. From private jets and limos to Black Hawks and MRAPS, there’s nothing Swamp Thing can’t pilot or drive.

    DARROW (The Rock 1996)
    as B.A. Baracus

Was thinking of using No Holds Barred Zeus here; I mean, a big black guy, Z’s shaved into his head instead of a Mohawk seemed like a pretty good match. Qualen wouldn’t just want dumb muscle though. He’d want someone smart enough to understand his plans, help enact them, kill w. impunity, and keep an eye on Castor and Swamp Thing for him. The ex-Marine can def. do those things.

An Angelic Magnificent Seven mash up.

THE HERO - Seth (City of Angels)
Def. a heroic leader type, despite the sad backstory. To save a small town in the grip of capital E Evil, he gathers his own ad hoc Heavenly host.

THE SMART ASS - Michael (Michael)
He’s an Angel, not a Saint. Michael’s a **** talking hard drinking chain smoking womanizer who still manages to do good and, he’d be fun to see interacting w. the other Angels.

THE OTHER HERO - Castiel (Supernatural)
Cas could easily step up and lead, but honestly I think he’s better following someone else’s lead. It was pretty much his entire M.O. after meeting the Winchesters.

THE BIG GUY - Amenadiel (Lucifer)
As the Fury of God Amenadiel could have been the Warrior guy, but he just edges out all the other Angels in terms of size/muscle.

THE YOUNG GUY - Marty DePolo (Teen Angel)
This kid passed away almost 25 years ago, and was made a Guardian Angel. He hasn’t matured much since then, and will provide much needed comedy relief in an otherwise grim situation.

THE WARRIOR GUY - Gabriel (Legion)
This’ll be a redemption arc for Gabriel, who followed God’s every order w.out question and somehow wound up being the bad guy. Joining a renegade group of Angels on an unsanctioned mission would’ve been unthinkable to him once.

THE OLD GUY - Angel (Nash Bridges)
Though he was eventually revealed to be human, my head canon says he was def. touched by The Divine. Too much weird stuff happened every time he showed up to be coincidence. Given Seth’s preoccupation w. mortals I figure he chose Angel specifically to bring a human POV to their mission.

Wanted to see how close I could get to a live action Challengers of The Unknown.

    FRANK WALKER (“Prof.” Haley)
A child prodigy who went to, and was banned from, an other dimensional paradise geared towards giving mankind a wonderful future. Frank grew into a reclusive, but gifted inventor and gadgeteer genius who wound up meeting and going on the run w. a brilliant young girl in trouble, fighting evil robots, going back to that other place, confronting his demons, saving the day AND the future.

    He leads The Challengers.

    BEN GANNON (“Ace” Morgan)
An Officer and fighter pilot in the U.S. Navy, one of those “if it’s got rotors or wings I can fly it” types. He wound up having to out think and out maneuver a rogue Artificial Intelligence in the body of a powerful one of a kind experimental jet, that was intent on starting WWIII. After that he finished his enlistment, opted out, going into the lucrative (but incredibly boring) private sector.

    He flies The Challengers.

    CAM DIAZ (“Red” Ryan)
A NYC bike messenger turned traceur (a practitioner of parkour). After falling into a life of crime he got caught between a daring gang of thieves, Chinese Gangsters, and the NYPD. He managed to play all sides against each other and managed to get away Scott free, which he’s actually always felt a little guilty about.

He defies the odds for The Challengers.

    NIKOLAI FEDEROV (“Rocky” Davis)
A freakishly strong Spetznaz commando who was kidnapped by aliens, taken to another planet along w. several other ppl and hunted like an animal. Was one of only three survivors who managed to steal a spacecraft and get back to earth, but it took two years. In that time, his Govt. had declared him dead and his wife remarried. He stayed in the U.S. working odd jobs and drowning his sorrows, wishing for something that’d give him some purpose in his life.

    He protects The Challengers.

    WILLIAM PATTERSON (June Robbins)
Was head of the FBI’s Forensic Science Unit for ten years, using her computer and deductive skills to take down multiple terrorists cells (foreign and domestic), secret cabals, Govt. moles, and criminals of all types. She also became a dark web hacktivist during that time then made a fortune as an app and game designer. Able to hold her own in a fist or even fire fight, she agreed to finance Frank Walker’s team, as long as she got to actively participate on missions. As the daughter of Bill Nye the Science guy, she’s always had a curious nature.

She’s the heart of The Challengers.
