Much like most live action video game movies, live action anime movies are something I'm weary of because holy crap there's an awful track record with these things. And I honestly don't expect something as long and sprawling as One Piece crammed into two hours to be what bucks that trend.
But here's hoping I'm wrong and it's something the fans will enjoy.

I'll just wait and dread till my favorite anime franchise gets the live action treatment one day - Tenchi Muyo!

Second link seems to be a dud.

Anyway, not sure how I feel about this. Live action adaptations of anime don't have a stellar reputation (for a number of reasons). Sure, a series or film here and there is done well. But those aren't the ones remembered. Its the Dragon Ball Evolutions and Ghost in the Shells that are remembered.

One Piece is a really stylized, zanny anime. Of all the anime to adapt, it feels like one of the strangest. But could be good. A bunch of pirate misfits, getting into crazy shenanigans. Could work. I'm surprised nobody tried Naruto and Fullmetal, outside of Japan that is.

It's more of an ongoing series than a single movie. After how they did Death Note I gave up on American adaptations of existing anime but here's hoping. I have more faith in Cowboy Bebop working out but I'm ok with being proven wrong.

Netflix did a terrible job with Death Note, and it wasn't the localization that was responsible. Too many adaptations try to fit iconic scenes directly into line action (not just US productions or even anime adaptations) while forgetting the heart of the story. It coooooouuuuullllddd be decent, but I won't hold my breath.

Wasn't HBO doing this? Or am I mis-remembering?

Weren't Netflix also doing an SAO adaption? I haven't heard anything about that in a while. Frankly that would probably adapt better then One Piece would.

...how badly does it date me that I recognize none of these actors?

Luffy actor is way to old looking. He looks to old for the role.

Edit-watched the cast video. The photo made him look older then he is.

Usopp and Nami's actors look like they can pull it off.

Thought Alita went pretty well. Although in that case it was mainly just adapting a popular OAV adaptation and manga and not a long-running anime.

There's two foreign (One Hong Kong with Jackie Chan, another made in France) City Hunter movies which I've read are kind of OK if not great.

I saw the casting announcement the other day and my first reaction was who are these people their names mean nothing to me. On second thoughts I have a vague idea I might of heard of the person playing Nami before.
