Why would we need a sequel? It's like saying Superman movie can setup Superman for the sequel instead of bringing him as the center of the stage.
Yeah the JL movie lost but at least it tried, BoP didn't even try. So we can make a JL movie that tone down all the other heroes then make the joker a hero and main character?
WB is changing the R rating certification in some countries. Not sure it will help. The movie has run its course.

Birds of Prey going PG for Japan release. Not shocking as it's pretty standard for Asian markets to get edited version of films due to rules and regulations that their countries have. This probably means that it'll get a China release as well but I don't expect more than 20 additional million to be added to the BO because of the coronavirus in those areas.
"I rhyme with tyre - And cause pollution - I think you'll find - It's the best solution: What Am I?"
"And that's the essential problem with 'Planetary' right there. When Elijah Snow says, 'The world is a strange place'... he gets Dracula, Doc Savage and Godzilla... When we say it, we get The Captain Fire-Cock Rock 'n' Roll Spectacular."

Yeah it'll be interesting on how long theaters will be shut down. Additionally, once theaters open we'll see 1 of 2 things. Either they'll be an influx of people going to the theater because of being stuck at home or they'll be extremely slow because of fear of the virus spreading still. Will be interesting which outcome we'll see.

We do not have to wait years. The fact that it did well critically and will more than likely have a good following will probably get it a sequel. WB isn't going to abandon the potential of this franchise because of a small hiccup especially if DC films continue to do better. It will be a lesson learned in regards to the R rating as well as the marketing. Additionally, the real first BoP film will get a lower budget maybe equivalent to jw2 or joker and be pg 13 to shoulder less risk.
Calm down. Step back and breath, by your standards then Captain America 1 and thor 1 shouldn't have been given sequels either because with the math they technically couldn't have broken even with their budgets. Studios look at a lot of things when greenlighting future projects and truthfully BoP hasn't done bad it just didn't live up to cbm expectations but at the end of the day its doing okay for an R rated film. Heck even Forbes and cbr admitted such recently. Like I said the sequel will get a lower budget and be pg13 to reduce risk. Additionally, you will most likely see the BoP from the comics you are wanting to see because it will be less risk associated with it and they will try to appeal more to fans to ensure costs are covered.
RT is an aggregate site, they try to take everyone and the barrier to be a RT critic is super low these days. It's not even getting good reviews outside of RT. No sequel for box office flop, even Superman got put on shelf.
They can easily put a spinoff on HBO Max now if they want one.
