Ah, those were the days, when Jim Lee still knew how to draw well!

IIRC, this issue was one of the few written by Ann Nocenti.

This page is absolutely delightful. I truly adore Artie and Leech together, it's a so sweet friendship, and no one knows how to draw them as Bogdanove.

I have this issue. Jim Lees earliest artwork if not the first X-Men he's ever drawn.

Yes it was. I probably could have posted the whole story.

I felt sorry for the kid in the wheelchair. His anger from dejection is understandable.

It's funny how the X-Men are all about saving mutants but rarely take time to check on Artie, Leech and Wiz kid (the Kid in the wheelchair).

I have a soft spot for those kids. I remember how badly Leech was treated by the Morlocks.

    I've always hated that arc.

Mainly because it all read very contrived and "out of the blue".

Did Gambit hold Angel down while Harpoon spiked his wings?
Did he personally lead and instruct the Marauders to kill the Morlocks?
The only crime Gambit is guilty of is not telling the X-Men up front that he had a hand in bringing the mutants who would form the Marauders together. A detail he only discovered after the fact.

I always felt that Lobdell was wrong for doing this to Gambit...just for cheap melodrama.

Pretty much. What he did was bad but it didn't justify Rogue leaving him in Antarctica to die.

Yes, this is the sort of powerful stuff ‘mere superhero comics’ rarely produce and certainly didn’t in the early 80s.*

    * at least in the UK/US, it was a different matter in Asia and Europe.

It was really very very daring to kill children on panel. AND afterwards to publicly exhibit their corpses. The result is bloodcurdling.

I don't believe this level of audacity has taken place many times later.

This is especially timely considering this is happening all over the U.S. right now with black teens. Nothing has changed in all this time.
