The first Jamaica Regge tune to make the pop charts internationally (in 1968), "israelites" by Desmond Dekker and the Aces still lifts my spirits in spite of its bleak subject matter, or perhaps because it shows determination in overcoming them

The other day, I was making a list of music videos I like that were made in my hometown of Vancouver. As I looked at my list, I noticed a lot of them were also quite cheerful. Including, "What's so funny 'bout peace love and understanding," by Elvis Costello & the Attractions and "Likey" by Twice. And this one, "Good Morning Starshine," by Serena Ryder, that has a definite Mary Tyler Moore feeling.

When you need cheering up, just think:

So as sure as the sun will shine
I'm gonna get my share now of what's mine
And then the harder they come
The harder they'll fall, one and all

"Running With The Wolves" - by Cloud Cult. This one is a reminder to look for opportunities (big or small) to break free.

"Heroes" by David Bowie. I heard again just this morning on KEXP (in Seattle). It felt like a shot glass full of hope.

A lot of songs that might have cheered me up in the old days, don't do the trick anymore, they make me sad. Like any songs with David Bowie, Prince, Freddy Mercury, John Lennon, Karen Carpenter, David Cassidy, Davey Jones, George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, Harry Chapin, Jim Croce, Robin Gibb, Andy Gibb, Maurice Gibb, Linda McCartney, Leonard Cohen, Amy Winehouse, Donna Summer, Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin . . And the list keeps getting longer all the time.
