Default Valhalla Awaits: The Best Of Deaths

Sometimes losing a character sucks, and sometimes it's glorious. Movies, comics, etc. Where was it done really well?

For me, The Swordsman. He couldn't see it, but he'd become the hero he wanted to be. I really wish somebody on Thor would have drawn a panel that showed him celebrating with The Einherjar.

Probably the only clearly good thing out of the whole season, I thought Theon's death defending Winterfell was a great end to his arc. He got to die as Theon, not Reek, and he had reconciled as a warrior respected by both his birth and adopted families. For a character who had at one point inspired nothing but contempt, then later a great deal of pity, his dying in combat to defend the Seven Kingdoms was about the perfect end for him.

Little to nothing else in the whole season would tie together as well.

Okay not a death people remember because the movie sucked but these two stuck with me.

The movie is Volcano with Tommy Lee Jones.

The first is the subway manager. He is carrying someone out of the train. Lava all around it. He jumps from the train knowing he wont make it. But when he lands feet first in the lava he throws the other person over the lava to safety.

And later in the movie they are blowing up the highrise to block the lava from the hospital. A fireman is trapped under some rubble. His partner is there trying to free him. The trapped guy tells him to go. The Partner does not and he tells the chief over the radio they are clear because he knows a delay would mean the people the hospital will die. So he gives up his life to save the others and sp his partner will not die alone.

I grew up watching a lot of '80s and early '90s action movies (most very bad) and so developed an intense dislike of Steven Seagal. However, in that one scene in the movie Executive Decision where he sacrifices himself so the others live was both surprising and meant he wasn't in the rest of the movie. So win-win.

I thought it was great how in the next episode one of the lawyers was escorting some Japanese visitors (who spoke very little English) around the office, and in one scene we saw them all peering down into the elevator shaft, and the only word they could communicate was "SPLAT!!!"

And this was before social media or other Internet spoilers. She was involved in so many sub plots, it really came out of nowhere.

If anyone ever had a completely "Well, This Will Get You Into Valhalla..." death, it was him.

Kinda think that the way Screwface went out in Marked For Death would get him in.
